Q6. I keep wearing holes in my pants from riding.

How do you prevent pant damage like this? How do you repair it? I'd like to still be able to wear jeans and ride.

Do you suffer any other unconventional clothing damage from riding?

cainmark,
@cainmark@mstdn.social avatar

@ascentale

A6. I used to wear jeans all the time. Then bicycling ripped them up in, uh, unexpected places. I switched to pants designed for fishing because they dry fast, and found they don't get holes like the blue jeans did. Shorts don't seem to have the blue jean problem either.

32 Kilometers or more I wear bicycle shorts.

Welcome to the May 31st BikeNite! Thanks for joining, and I hope we all enjoy chatting about cycle stuff! Answer whenever at your convenience. Anyone can join, now or later. Reply to what you like, and boost for visibility.

We'll start out with our introduction:

Q1. Where are you posting from today? I've seen so many more people riding around recently. It may be because of warm weather, or because of Bike Month. What local cycling trends have you seen?

cainmark,
@cainmark@mstdn.social avatar

@skinnylatte @ascentale

I'm guessing because they're cheaper department store bicycles and not as worrisome if they get stolen.

A sadly now gone friend had this response

"They just need to tighten up on their defense."

And found he wouldn't have to say another word as the sports fans would talk at length.

In my circles it was "Do you think the Hulk could beat Superman in a no flight fight?"

Kinda insane I made it on my own to the hospital, emergency services but they turned me down and I had to call an ambulance from the parking place 🤨

@stux

Glad your doing better. Not happy that you had to deal with what seems like standard procedure for American hospitals.

How much alone time vs socializing do you need?

For me there are a few people who are usually equalizing, and I can just be around them, so I won't count that. But generally, I find about 3 times a week, I'm game for socializing. A day in between to rest is usually nice, but the larger the gathering or if we go somewhere particularly noisy or I'm meeting new people that involves more effort, and my social battery empties sooner. I'm very curious where everyone else falls on this!

cainmark,
@cainmark@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr

About 2 weeks. I don't necessarily want to hang with anyone or get together, but I require people around me. Just going to the grocery store is enough for that for me.

Pff.. I just got cut off on my bike by this triple A hole with his massive window blinded SUV on the bike lane while he was holding his phone making a call

I was signing and yelling he should put his phone down and open his eyes, didn't take much of his car would have enjoyed the frame of my bike

Seemed like a "though businessman" or perhaps even a diplomat with foreign licence who did like he "owned the place" but not when I'm around

I don't care for your status, act like a human or ...

cainmark,

@stux

Probably an American. And I post that as an American. is a serious problem here.

cainmark,
@cainmark@mstdn.social avatar

@stux @islekcaganmert @GottaLaff

A lot of America is like that, too. Especially mid-size cities full of dangerous "stroads" that look the same from state to state.

Rural is green grass, brown grass, cows and/or horses or corn or wheat for miles. Or trees that look so similar you feel like you must be going in circles.

Sometimes the way people phrase things is so telling. For instance, telling women they should be "taking care of" their husband and children. Another adult doesn't need taken care of like a child, what you want is for women to be a Sex Mom.

cainmark,
@cainmark@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr

Stifler's mom from "American Pie" movie is the only Sex Mom because she's fictional.

So, what's the thing, what's the big thing no one can help you with? How do you cope with it?

cainmark,
@cainmark@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr

That there's an entire generation that believe they're always right and that what other people think is always more important than what I (or my generation and those following) think or feel because they believe empathy is a weakness.

I bicycle. I walk. I can sometimes be very silly. On purpose.

@sam wonders how to respond after a bad driver interaction:

Q6. When you have a dangerous interaction with a driver that doesn't involve a crash (drivers throwing things, pulling in front of you and getting out of their car and attempting to stop your bike, etc.) do you call the police, file a report later, get away and then do nothing, or something else? What factors go into making your decision?

#BikeNite #BikeNiteQ

cainmark,
@cainmark@mstdn.social avatar

@sam @moira @ascentale

That's why I still report if it's really bad, because those reports can show the same abusive behavior to different people over time. I know one guy lost his license because he kept intentionally terrifying people cycling on the same quiet country road with his distinctive white pickup truck.

So far, out of more than 100 protests asking for divestment from the Israel state, York in the UK and Brown in the U.S. are the only ones who've agreed to divest.

There should be more than that. Hope there are, or will be.

Trying to setup a computer without internet (not for security reasons, distraction from working on stuff reasons) is far harder than I thought it would be. This computer is on another location away from wifi and ethernet and I don't want either.

Several distributions work live from cd DVD USB or microwave-- but none install to this 2018 Dell XPS desktop.

Again, this "air-gapped" computer isn't for security reasons.

So far, void linux and knoppix work the best live.

cainmark,
@cainmark@mstdn.social avatar

@RL_Dane

Yep. Won't install. Tried secure boot off to finally get it to livecd part. Used gparted to check partitions. Finally got past pcie error issue. Livecd works Still won't install.

cainmark,
@cainmark@mstdn.social avatar

@RL_Dane

That, and each distribution has a different problem. I'd understand if they all had the same issue, that would make sense and I could figure it out.

cainmark,
@cainmark@mstdn.social avatar

@RL_Dane

Sigh, yep.

Part of my frustration is that this machine still seems new to me. I can't afford to buy new machines that often. 2006 GNU/Linux Debian based Ubuntu saved my dead Windows computer that suddenly decided it didn't like to display graphics. It was glorious.

Unfortunately, I think in 10-15 year replacements while the industry thinks in 6 months to 2 year replacements.

Genuinely I believe that most people (including me a few years ago) think they can’t bake or make bread because there are so many awful recipes on the internet.

Use a good book, or a great resource like King Arthur’s Recipes, AND a scale, and things get so much easier

cainmark,
@cainmark@mstdn.social avatar

@skinnylatte

Yeah, there is no way to make delicious Southern cooking better by changing the ingredients to make them healthy.

You'll have something, but it won't taste good. There are delicious recipes, but you change a Southern recipe --it's not Southern anymore.

When people talk about the days of mass media in the form of the evening news, Dan Rather, everyone "on the same page" with wistful longing... I get why. The current landscape is chaotic.

But, that period of more centralized media left a lot of people out. It made certain perspectives impossible to contemplate.

Like during the early days of the Gulf War: the antiwar movement was invisible.

cainmark,
@cainmark@mstdn.social avatar

@justafrog @futurebird

Yup. The difference between things posted about Ferguson from people who were there were vastly different from the mainstream media when they finally acknowledged it.

I was desperate to be liked, but wouldn't commit petty crimes or bully others. Got bullied verbally a lot but didn't realize it until decades later.

Even though I got a going away party when moving to another country, no one thought about how I was getting home. Walked the 2 hours home. One letter of apology 2 years later. One.

Living through the 1980s I was sure there wasn't going to be a 1990s or past it for humans. Kind of glad to be wrong, but boy did the U.S. take some other types of mind-boggingly stupid turns in this timeline.
