You know who are awesome? Librarians. I put in a request 5 weeks ago to see if we can get a scanned copy of a library book so that I can run it through text-to-speech software and read it for a paper I'm writing. Accessibility, right? My wrists hurt (a lot), and this helps.

The librarians got pushback from the publisher on scanning 4 chapters b/c that's more than 20% of the book. Potential violation of copyright. Needed for access.

So they bought the fucking ebook for me.

My favourite is the confusion between "librarian who works at a university" and "University Librarian".

Someone I knwo is part of the evacuation from Yellowknife. She posted a picture from the highway out. Seeing the CL-415 coming out of the haze must be both a total relief and horror. Also one of her neighbours just turned on a sprinkler on her house... So many people are going to lose so very much.

Poll after poll show that Quebecers disapprove of the CAQs IF you ask them about specific issues (the economy, healthcare, COVID, housing, environment) but (this data is from June, but I don't think it's changed much) they would still win a huge majority if there was an election. https://338canada.com/quebec/ Part of this is that the opposition parties range from "utter fucking rudderless crap with no leader" to "oh, those are radical lefties" (which really means they are center left on most things)

The conversation that @ottaross and I are having makes me a bit sad. There was a time in Canada where one could look at a conservative and think "oh, they're totally wrong, but that seems like it's well thought out and based on something". Like Joe Clark was not a guy I'd vote for, but he wasn't a fucking monster. About the time Ronald Reagan/Newt Gingrich experiment kicked off they all went full evil and .. honest to god it's just so awful.

I want to talk about something that I've experienced here in Spain. To be clear, besides Holland and the UK, this is the only other Euro country I've been to. From the outside, and on paper, Spain seems quite good about LGBTQIA+ rights. (you can dig in deeper and tell me I'm wrong: I largely did a "will my kid be killed" level of research). The thing is, all my research said it would be fine. BUT! they didn't talk about the reality on the ground.. so, here's where I say something...

First blizzard. First posts in the neighbourhood facebook group of mayhem caused by the snow removal crews. This time they seem to have managed to partially mount/ram a front stoop, taking out part of the railing and one of the two posts that support the second floor balcony. This, let's be honest, is a stellar effort.

As a Scots Canadian white dude who can basically trace every person I’m related to back at least 10 or 15 generations it’s easy to point at people who use 23andme and laugh. Until you think about diasporic communities that have lost their roots through slavery/genocide/war, or a lovely cocktail of all three. That the “hack” now seems to be “sucking up data from shit passwords” doesn’t change a damn thing. A corporation was holding DNA records. They failed to secure it properly …

So apparently the kkkonvoy people are so dumb that they don’t understand that the ruling in the emergencies act was only on that. They think it means that there was a ruling that the whole fuckery in Ottawa was legal. My god but they are horribly, irredeemably stupid.

So, if you're in and you were, say, thinking of going to have a wee trip to Place Du Canada today, you should be aware that at about 9am there were 15 police cars around the square, an additional five on side streets, plus the gray jumpsuited tacticool riot guys in their REALLY. BIG. MANLY. TRUCK. and the K-9 unit. I also saw the horses in their trailers heading that way. Just in case you were headed that way.

@Snowshadow @gemelliz @CanadianCrone my whole life people have mocked "tax and spend liberals" and I've always been confused by this. First you figure out a revenue stream (taxes) and then you spend? This seems prudent. Meanwhile the rightward side of the spectrum gives tax breaks that mostly favour the rich and come at the expense of the less well off (and disproportionately hurts those who are poor) and then winds up having to go even deeper in debt to provide even basic services.

@mike I have a rule. First the place your from's team, then Canadian (yes, all.. ugh), then original six, then the last team from a place that gets winter, then whoever is not the mighty ducks because that's a really stupid name for a hockey team.
