People of Mastodon!

I'm researching the growth of ebikes ...

... in cities around the US

I've talked to many people who love them!

But also want to include the perspective of folks who have concerns ...

... i.e. about the speed and weight of ebikes in accidents with pedestrians or other cyclists, and the like

If anyone has thoughts they wanna share, ping me! I'm all ears: clive@clivethompson.net

Pass this along if you know anyone else with perspective they want to share

#fedibikes

@clive licensing maybe necessary and limits on maximum speed. The best thing about e-bikes is the ease of climbing hills, everything else is redundant imo.

as i read up on invasives, murrow's honeysuckle is a bit of an asshole:

"[S]ome studies have led researchers to believe that honeysuckle may release a toxin into the soil from their roots that would harm surrounding vegetation, preventing their growth."

I thought I was the only one who has a permanent lead mark on my skin from being stabbed with a pencil! It happened when I was in 6th grade; the result of a pencil fight. If this article is to be believed, it's actually a common phenomenon.

Mike Johnson closely collaborated, promoted “conversion therapy,” a discredited practice that asserted it could change the sexual orientation of gay and lesbian individuals.

The group shut down in 2013, public apology for the “pain and hurt” his organization caused. Conversion therapy has been widely condemned by most major medical institutions and has been shown to be harmful to struggling LGBTQ people.

Trump ally Johnson distributed disinformation about what Johnson described as the “dangerous” gay lifestyle." Homosexual behavior is something you do, it’s not something that you are.” said .

In print, radio and on television, Johnson, frequently disparaged homosexuality, advocated for the criminalization of gay sex and went so far as to partially blame it for the fall of the Roman Empire.

“Some credit to the fall of Rome also to the rampant homosexual behavior that was condoned by the society,”

You can’t delete your past, MAGA Mike Johnson. The internet is forever, and so is your vile hate.

@georgetakei After reading his opinions on women and procreation I am puzzled he and his wife don’t have 11 children. She can have no say in the matter, and he has an expectation women must bare as many children as possible.

Another teacher asked me an interesting question today. "What do you think about this idea of replacing calculus with statistics. After all statistics is more useful."

That's probably true on the surface, but I can't say I'm a huge fan of the "replace calc with stats" craze... even as I lament the poor understanding many people have of stats. It's obvious we need more education on interpreting datasets and visualizations.

But, there is a subtext to this argument I dislike. 1/

@futurebird I aced calculus and almost flunked out of stats. Which one is easier?

Ok but how they define spam? Because I opened my DMs back up and haven't seen any additional spam.

Furthermore, if they could already detect the spam, why couldn't they just filter it out without charging people $8 to enact this change?

@chrismessina I never got spam until Musk took over. He created a problem, now he’s charging money to solve it.

Well this is quite annoying. I just realized that tags on Mastodon are case sensitive. I've been intentionally doing pascal case style tags for accessibility and assumed the tag would be treated as the same no matter the case. However, as an example and are treated as two different tags.

I'm not sure how to deal with this.
