Myth: Mastodon is dead (according to the media and some people)

Truth: The answer is no, Mastodon or rather the Fediverse is very much alive and growing. One of my posts earlier this month got 178 boosts and 200 favorites at the time of the screenshot. None of my Birdsite posts ever gets this kind of engagement.

The media likes to say alternatives are dead to get users to keep using the birdsite. In reality, it’s growing and it certainly takes time to become more in use. Give it some more time.

(Also it's not just Mastodon as the media likes to say. The Mastodon they are referring to is the Fediverse, which includes a variety of software that is built on ActivityPub in exchanging messages)

Joined a special interest lemmy group. Lemmy seems reasonably stable and usable. I haven't used it enough to have a major opinion. My use of reddit was very small, so I can't compare it to reddit. Interoperability with the rest of Fediverse seems minimal to non-existent. Or at least I haven't been able to find any.

Believe it or not, Post Importing is something that have for a while. This is something that Mastodon is dropping the ball, which is why people are reluctant to move from a big server to a medium or smaller server.

With Calckey, you can import posts that you downloaded from your archive into your new account at Calckey. Of course, I haven't tried this feature yet.

Since the UI looks similar to Twitter, it might be a viable option. Yes, there is an obligatory Twitter import option, which is not implemented yet.

@yon @chikorita157 I’m not the biggest fan of Mastodon's UI, it's just feels so, well not that appealing to use. The UI may be one of the reasons some are turned off by Mastodon thinking it's too hard.

I use a Mastodon client, Ivory so this doesn't impact me too much.

Not sure what Meta can come up with. Besides of algo, Calckey pretty much has everything that Meta can come up with in terms of trying to replace Twitter. Mastodon just needs to add better search, quote posts (controversial to some) and post importing to outpace Meta. Neither Calckey nor Mastodon from my knowledge encrypts direct messages though.

Of course, Mastodon and Calckey devs need to work quick to make their platforms look more attractive than Meta. I admit, I do like the Calckey UI better, but I use Ivory most of the time and it doesn't fully work there. :meowsad:

@yon @chikorita157 There has been disagreement between mstdn social and mastodon art, who decided to defed from universeodon since they have the growth mindset and of course implemented full season in a sketchy way.

It's obvious that Meta is doing this to divide the fediverse. Of course, I don't have unlimited resources to grow forever, unless users are willing to help get us there of course by covering some of the server costs.

On the same day Red Hat closing their source to RHEL, they are laying off hundreds of people.

This seems to be a theme here, such a shame. I won't switch though since I need to be using Red Hat on some of my personal servers (with the developer program thing) since it's what my job uses.

The Mastodon and Calckey servers I host are the only exceptions, they don't use RHEL at all.

Rob, to twitter

A cage match between and CEOs? Interesting.

" In a now-viral back-and-forth seen on Twitter and Instagram this week, the two tech billionaires seemingly agreed to a “cage match” face off. It all started when Musk, who owns Twitter, responded to a tweet about Meta reportedly preparing to release a new Twitter rival called “Threads.” He took a dig about the world becoming “exclusively under Zuck’s thumb with no other options" — but then one Twitter user jokingly warned Musk of Zuckerberg's jiu jitsu training. “I’m up for a cage match if he is lol,” Musk wrote late Tuesday. Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta Platforms, soon responded — and appeared to agree to Musk's proposal.
“Send me location,” Zuckerberg wrote on a Wednesday night Instagram story, which showed a screenshot of Musk's tweet alongside another user's response urging the Twitter owner to “start training.” Zuckerberg is actually trained in mixed martial arts. The Facebook founder posted about completing his first jiu jitsu tournament last month. In response to Zuckerberg’s location request on Wednesday, Musk proposed the Vegas Octagon. He then joked about his fighting skills and workout routine, suggesting that the fight may not be serious. “I have this great move that I call ‘The Walrus’, where I just lie on top of my opponent & do nothing,” Musk wrote. "

I need more folks to know who are talking about or joining the Fediverse that the company has coordinated with the federal government in the US to remove people from disability benefits.

No, I'm not joking. Many folks on disability know better than to EVER post pictures on that platform as they've been used against them. Or to ever talk about having a slightly better day for their ailments than usual. Having them spy on the is NOT okay and will actively make this platform less safe for many disabled people. That should be seriously considered.

Thanks to the Reddit growth spike, along with being listed on Fedi Gaden and Join Mastodon, we are seeing growth. It's all thanks to the ensittification of Twitterand Reddit and people simply having enough of being mistreated.

This will be a trend that centralized platforms will face as they start to realize that they can't keep losing money as VC funding dries up with interest rates rising. Cohost just recently revealed they are losing $41k a month.

Thankfully, our operation doesn’t require expensive servers as we are running services for the fediverse, which makes hosting our services more affordable.

As always, while optional, you can support us on:

Paypal - https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=HREN4ATRLZ54S
Ko-Fi - https://ko-fi.com/V7V8GAJR9
Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/sakurajimamastodon

Any funding helps us offset the costs the owner has to pay to cover the costs of running the server, and also increase capacity when needed. Regardless if you donate monthly or not, we will continue to provide our services for free forever.

Our cost breakdowns can be seen at our WordPress site:
https://blog.sakurajima.moe/about/sakurajima-costs/

Break even cost is currently $26/month.Note the owner covers the other half the costs since, well they use the service after all too. :sylveonsmug:

@Rob @sakurajima You are obviously not hosting all the users as it's spread out across multiple servers. A server only stores posts that it knows about (following, boosts, etc) and content generated by the hers here.

https://mastodon.help explains how the fediverse work as well.

Of course, the Steam Deck fanboys are out viciously attacking the ROG Ally because it has bugs. Of course, those fanboys didn’t realize how buggy the Deck was initally before the bugs and glitches got fixed.

Obviously, these fanboys will attack every competitor, as they want Valve to have a monopoly on the handheld gaming PC market. With their behavior and their toxic community, I’m glad that I sold my Steam Deck, don’t want to be a part of this toxic community (not to mention it hurts my hands when I use it since it’s too big and bulky, which the fanboys would defend viciously, and also those trackpads, which are mostly useless and make the device bigger than it needs to.)

Don’t get me wrong, the Steam Deck is a good device, but not for me. The community however, is pretty toxic.

Defending and worshiping corporations is silly, they are not your friends.

chikorita157, to Discord
@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

With the whole Reddit meltdown, people think that Discord is a replacement for forums. People need to stop using Discord for everything, especially for storing valuable resources like guides, when Wikis and Internet Forums exists and can be searched without users having to join a Discord server. The content aren't readable unless the user joins. Also, what happens if the server goes away... well, those contents holding valuable information goes away, forever.

Discord shouldn't be the repository for information and only be used for text and voice chat. It's another attempt to lock users into a platform that can get exploited by late capitalism or enshittification.

This illustrate a huge risk we are are somewhat experiencing at Mastodon Social. I have reiterated that Mastodon Social is way too big to moderate as they do not have a big enough moderation team to keep up with the number of members joining.

If you are new here, Mastodon Social had suffered several SPAM attacks:
https://sakurajima.moe/@chikorita157/110384898422724959
https://sakurajima.moe/@chikorita157/110310771991434168

Also, we had run into issues where NSFW accounts are not using CW, one account posting lolicon, and an account on an Arstechnica toot promoting their Telegram channel for cooking classes.

Now, there are some small and medium size instances that are limiting/silencing Mastodon Social, few are suspending it all together. However, placing limits and suspensions on Mastodon Social have an impact on our users, which is why we won't do it ever. The problem is, Mastodon Social has an outsized influence as there is a lot of users on it and even thinking about doing a block will impact our reach.

I recommend migrating to a small or medium size instance. Why? The experience will be better with better moderation and the local timeline is more useful. Also, your posts won't get hidden on the federated timeline, meaning more reach.

We at Sakurajima (which leads to our landing page website with all the information you need to know before joining) are glad to welcome creators who review and create content around Japanese media and Japanese media fans. We both run a Mastodon and a Calckey server.

If our server don't meet your needs, try looking for another on fedi garden or JoinMastodon. Help reduce the workload of moderators of medium and small servers and migrate to a small or medium server from Mastodon Social.

I'm glad to overpay a little bit more for the Analogue Pocket as the FPGA shortage is still going on. If you look at the inventory of the FPGA the Pocket uses, the Cyclone V, it's still out. I don't expect this to improve anytime soon as buyers might have to wait 1-2 years until they can get the console. Also, there is no guarantee that Analogue might be around given the upcoming recession.

They still haven't shipped orders from 2022 and they are still accepting them. It's crazy.

Sometime this week, I want to give a serious look at creating a Pixelfed account. There are images & poetry I would like to share that I do not want to be granted rights to a third-party host. Right now I am thinking mainly of my Shahai (Photo with accompanying haiku). Maybe other stuff depending on what communities I find there.

Any suggestions of what Pixelfied instance would be good?

I have been using the term lately to describe downfall, but it's happening to all centralized platforms lately because the era of easy money is coming to an end with interest rates raising. It's a term coined by Cory Doctorow. He describes it as this:

Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die.

I call this enshittification, and it is a seemingly inevitable"consequence arising from the combination of the ease of changing how a platform allocates value, combined with the nature of a “two sided market,” where a platform sits between buyers and sellers, hold each hostage to the other, raking off an ever-larger share of the value that passes between them.
Source

Can the Fediverse be "enshittified." The answer is no as there is no profit motive if you use open source software that uses ActivityPub like Mastodon, Misskey, Akkoma, Calckey, Pixelfed, etc. Servers are run by users or organizations, usually without a profit motive. Most of them receive funding through donations. If one server decides to go to crap or plans to shut down, you can always move to another server. This is why the ActivityPub powered Fediverse can never be enshittified unlike corporate, centralized platforms that are unlikely to turn a profit.
