@pedro is using a rather old (but very cool) protocol:

It had its high time approx. 90s to mid 00s. I very much enjoyed it.

It ticks all the boxes when it comes to and freedom of interface: a number of web-based services, CLI tools like (mine), and other GUI-tools.

I hope it'll get popular again so that people who care could forget all web-based including :

The Fediverse will need to develop an automated spam management system.

In short, an AI

Do you think any mainstream social media platform would stand a chance against A.I.s trying to break into their system with people alone? Because if you do, you are fooling yourself.

I work for Meta and I know our automated system catches 99% of everything, but even with that remaining 1% I am still employed full-time with 8-12 hour work days. Most of what I manage now are reviews and appeals

Linux_Is_Best,
@Linux_Is_Best@mstdn.social avatar

Do you know what helped kill forums?

The lack of proper automated spam management. Forum communities made it seem like a daunting task to register and join, making users jump through hoops to prove they were human. All while AIs easily defeated Capacha, Human Q&A, and e-mail verification.

Social media took a different route. They knew to fight AI you needed AI. As a result joining social media was easy and painless for a person.

Once a long time ago, was a client of @nodebb. Right from the start their migrated forum was a hit, with many users posting actively from day 1.

Alas, the good times were not to last as they migrated away from (to Discord) soon afterwards.

I'm not going to posit that them migrating away from forums was a sign of their doom (what proof do I have? hah!), but it's still sad to see former clients sail off into the sunset.

Hello world. I haven't been here long but I just wanna say that Mastodon has really rekindled my love of the internet. It feels like the best of old and new school social media, and takes me back to the Usenet, IRC, and forum days all at once.

The community is phenomenal, kind, and helpful; hashtags are great again; it's not just some centralised cesspool run by a billion dollar child; algorithm shmalgorithm; and it's FOSS! Amazing all round.

This might be the caffeine and ADHD medication talking but I love you. Take my affection and enjoy the rest of your day. :blobcat_hearthug:

I keep hearing about how is too complicated for people to grok, and I can't help but think that this is entirely a marketing problem. positions itself as THE , each instance being one way to connect to it, but not much more (the lack of local/instance-only toots reinforces this).

It's like the whole idea that each individual instance can have their own subculture, memes, and posts is secondary to this grand idea of the fediverse. No wonder people don't get it!

devnull, (edited )
@devnull@crag.social avatar

The whole idea centres around one eventually consistent network, and how quickly the content you want to see propagates to you depends on the instance you pick... and we wonder why people don't get it 😃

Okay this eventually leads to me talking about .

So why not both? Why can't we have local-only content and subcommunity while simultaneously allowing content to be federated out to the wider ? Is it because we don't trust our users to federate well?

daredevil, to AskKbin in ✨ What is your favorite thing about kbin? ✨
daredevil avatar

You mentioned a lot of things that I generally really enjoy about as well.

⭐ The admin @ernest is an incredibly hardworking, kind, supportive, and an all-around good person. This is my tip top most favorite thing because good leadership and communication is essential to a good and thriving community. Ernest is a star!

Same, he also gets bonus points for listening to, and implementing suggestions. Some of them have come quite quickly as well. These factors when combined have made me feel like I'm really a part of the community.

⭐ I enjoy making scripts/styles for kbin. kbin is the reason I began learning JS, HTML, and CSS. I am so happy I started learning, and it's all thanks to kbin.

Cheers to that, I actually use one of yours -- specifically the one that changes the layout of profile pages.

⭐ No malicious, tricky, over-calculated algorithm. It's very straight-forward and honest here. I love seeing a mix of upvoted/downvoted comments in comment sections too, rather than just top upvoted, because it makes me feel more apart of the conversation with everyone. Your contributions and thoughts won't get drowned out by upvoted witty remarks, that is truly unique to kbin (and maybe elsewhere on the fediverse?).

Agreed -- I think Mastodon also functions similarly. It makes a bit challenging at times, but I'm open to experimenting with it.

⭐ kbin gives me the urge to contribute, interact, and create because our contributions have actual impact. Can't say the same for other sites. Everywhere else is lurk only.

Hard agree -- though it wears on me at times when I'm unable to get some engagement going after keeping at it for so long. I've changed my mindset about it a little while ago, so it's not too bad.

⭐ Tightknit but welcoming. kbin is small enough that I run into familiar people all the time, and I recognize usernames everywhere.

Agreed, and to add onto this -- profile pictures are pretty easily recognizable as well.

⭐ Authenticity. kbin is authentic and real. It's not pushing a product, not manipulating what you see, not building an ad profile. It is what a forum should be.

Yeah, adding on one of your points again -- it's very reminiscent of what used to feel like. However, at the same time, it feels like something more due to the addition of . may not be super popular on /kbin, but I think they're a stellar addition to the forum experience. I've had some nice back-and-forths with users from the comfort of /kbin's UI. I think there's more potential in what you can do with them, too.

Will forums fix the Internet?

In the opinion portion of Kurzgesagt's most recent video, they suggest that going back to small forums, bulletin boards, etc. will help people deradicalize and become more empathetic. The idea behind this is that, just like real life, forums allow people who disagree on certain things to bond under a shared interest or identity;...

What happened to forums?

2 problems really.

  1. People are social and tribal, and they like to unite where there are the most people with the most activity.

Social media guaranteed both, with everyone knowing someone already there and continuously something and someone new to contribute. You're experiencing that, right now, here on Mastodon.

But it is also why I moved from Mastodon dot social to a different instance

I don't want the Fediverse to mistakenly experience a de facto centralized platform

If almost everyone is on Mastodon dot social or dot online, they'll be under the same umbrella, run by the same creators of the software (they run those 2 instances)

I think they do a great job. I started on Mastodon dot social. Still, I think it wise to branch out a little.

Supporting each other on forums is so much more valuable because it leaves a record for future developers to see (and search). Chat servers are ephemeral. The same question will be asked over and over because it leaves no record. It wastes everyone's (the askers and the answerers) time.

We're at the stage where I point out how LMDE does not receive the same level of love and care as their Ubuntu release.

https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=2374179#p2374179

I regularly perform:

sudo apt update

sudo apt dist-upgrade

If there were updates, I'd know about it. The few that happen are supplied by Debian, themselves.

Cinnamon, Mint's own developed desktop, started to receive only security patch fixes, while Mint Ubuntu's had new features.

It's one of many reasons why I don't recommend, Mint

Linux_Is_Best,
@Linux_Is_Best@mastodon.social avatar

I'm not saying everyone is in on it. The concern the staffs is showing is likely indeed genuine.

What is most likely is whoever is the lead administrator (top dog) has this setup and everyone else is none the wiser.

But this is why, I don't like forums. You have nonsense like this that plays out.

It is a good example on why the Fediverse with places such as, Mastodon, tend to be more trustworthy.
