@pluralistic A great read!

In one sentence it says โ€žGolden Age stfnal dreamsโ€œ. Is that a typo or an abbreviation/reference I donโ€™t get? ๐Ÿค”

I just re-watched "Howl's Moving Castle" because I had forgotten what exactly it was about. I nodded off towards the end, and I'm sure that in a few months I will once again be unable to recount the exact plot.

But it looks so gorgeous. I love the depiction of early 20th century European cities. The "airplanes" are a nod to Nausicaรค or Laputa but are animated much more fluently. The quality holds up all the way to the end. But the plot just feels so obtuse to me.

compfu,
@compfu@mograph.social avatar

Did Howl make a deal with Calcifer? It feels like a bad one for both. Or was Calcifer just happy he didn't die in a lake like other shooting stars? What did Howl get out of the deal? Magical powers or additional powers?

We never learn the reason for the war but at the end it turns out that the scarecrow is the other nation's prince? Then there's the overused "kiss of true love" trope - but not between the main characters...

I wish I liked the movie more. But it confuses me too much.

@seanbala Hey Sean, thanks for your thoughts. I've watched the dubbed version (German in my case). I'll try the Japanese version with subtitles!

@eniko awesome. Is the location of the prize determined beforehand or are you "faking it", in order to prove the point of the Monty Hall problem?

Holy crap Cinesync 5 is a resource pig. Tried to do a call with a vendor using it, and it took 80Gigs of RAM and most of my CPU. Couldn't get Zoom to work right with it, and had just finished a session with version 4 that worked perfectly as expected.

Anyone else using this nightmare?

compfu,
@compfu@mograph.social avatar

@virtualbri @philipdrobar Version 5 was the rewrite after ftrack had aquired them, wasnโ€™t it?

By the way, what happened to spherical harmonics? Is it still a thing in lighting and rendering or has it been superseded by "brute forcing" on GPUs?

@stefaneiseleart I'm wondering how much of that clip is almost completely from the underlying training data.

What I like about this tutorial is that it not only shows good-looking shots that illustrate the point he's making, but also an example of a shot that doesn't work well (without pointing fingers).

That, and it doesn't try to cram many principles of image composition into it. It's mostly about contrast and detail to get the viewer to look at the desired spots.

"Trip to Infinity" is a documentary about... well... infinity. It relies heavily on created by artists and studios from across the world. I've tried to look up everybody who's mentioned in the credits but unfortunately, not all of them present their work online.

Here's a small thread of the clips that can be found on vimeo for example. But let's start with a nice article about how the documentary came to be:

I got a "refrigerator question" after TV series (You enjou a film but later get a "wait-what?" moment) It makes no sense for absolute tyranny to exist in a community of less than 10k people, struggling to survive in a hole. Why lie to people for hundreds of years yet the truth increases chances or survival?

Is tyranny just an overused trope in dystopias for story conflict, or is this how the system makes us tolerate the bad governments of today?

compfu,
@compfu@mograph.social avatar

@dilmandila

While I enjoyed the show as well I also missed more visible signs of how they create cohesion in this society (flag waving, folk tales, customs, paradesโ€ฆ).

I have heard that the books go into more detail about how the people are kept docile than what was shown in season 1 of the show. So we might learn more about that.

I just learned about "Bad Apple". It's a more than 10 years old black and white animation that people have been playing back on any kind of hardware or medium (the original song was a chiptune from 1998). The animation is on youtube with 81 million views and there are C64 and tesla coil versions of it. But the most amazing one is this animation that's more than just 6000 printed frames: it also relies on camera pans on the animator's desk.

The seven space samurai are fighting the space Nazis in spaaaaaace!

It's worth watching for the super real android in the first act. If it was full CG then... wow! But even if it was a practical suit and they replaced the actor's neck with CG bolts and pistons it looks amazing (the robot from Lost In Space was done that way).

Story-wise it goes downhill from there. It's a mix of 300, Dune, Warhammer... an All-You-Can-Eat buffet of visuals and characters.

Bollards and โ€˜superblocksโ€™: how Europeโ€™s cities are turning on the car - https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2023/dec/18/bollards-and-superblocks-how-europes-cities-are-turning-on-the-car "on representative main thoroughfares crisscrossing the French capital, there are now more bicycles than cars โ€“ almost half as many again"

compfu,
@compfu@mograph.social avatar

@glynmoody Germany ia sadly going in the other direction. A car-free street in Berlin was ceded back to cars by the new conservative mayor. And a law that would have allowed cities to turn 50km/h streets into 30km/h areas was defeated in parliament. ๐Ÿ˜ข

@flipsideza I'm not a fan but I liked Shin Godzilla. It was mostly the government doing meetings, failing at disaster management, assuring the people that things are ok just to be proven wrong shortly after. I saw it around the time Covid hit so it felt very prescient ๐Ÿ˜…

Godzilla vs. Kong on the other hand... what a waste of time.

Can our work with ? I've tried to find out and created a shot containing the heart emoji โค๏ธ in our database. Will that name be preserved all the way to a Nuke render that is in turn published back to ftrack?

๐Ÿงต

compfu,
@compfu@mograph.social avatar

Everything looks good on our fileserver (Linux/nfs). The emoji also works in custom PySide GUIs (where it's monochrome) and Nuke handles it perfectly in its GUI and as a file name.

The first road-block is encountered in one of our scripts. I simply had a regex in there that allowed alphanumeric characters for shot names only (to weed out spaces, umlauts etc that I thought would never occur in actual shot names).

Physicist Lise Meitnerโ€™s brilliance led to the discovery of nuclear fission. But her long time collaborator Otto Hahn, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry without her in 1944, even though she had given the first theoretical explanation.

Albert Einstein called Meitner โ€œour Marie Curie." She also adamantly refused to work on the atomic bomb during WWII. https://whyy.org/articles/lise-meitner-the-forgotten-woman-of-nuclear-physics-who-deserved-a-nobel-prize/

I've re-watched the original Beauty and the Beast recently and the CG ballroom is awesome. Especially the many reflections. introduced onto the big screen in a way that didn't show any shortcomings or limits of that tech. They immediately went to a level that even now looks very polished.

(caveat: I don't know the details. If somebody in the know told me "the reflections were actually hand-painted by 1000 monkeys because CG couldn't do it yet" I'm happy to correct myself ๐Ÿ˜‰)

After more than ten years in the industry, I have an approximate knowledge of many things.

Except color management. Every time I hear other TDs talk about color profiles it sounds like the adults in Charlie Brown talking.

compfu,
@compfu@mograph.social avatar

@yantor3d Ah, color. No other area of a vfx pipeline makes you realise that "you know nothing, John Snow."

The more you learn about color science, the more you go "wait, so I've used term X wrong for years?" or "wait, so the DCCs just did it wrong for years and nobody cared or noticed?"

The end state is madness where nothing holds true anymore:
