@AdamBishop I have already had instructions from clients to "ignore the current content on our website, it's not very good". Not sure whether that content was produced by MT/AI or a bad translator, but it showed they (still) demand quality.

@SAS1954 @boeken Robert Galbraith is een pseudoniem van JK Rowling. Onder deze naam heeft ze inmiddels 7 detectives geschreven. Ik vind ze persoonlijk erg goed.

@SAS1954 @boeken Gewoon een keertje proberen. 😉 Het eerste deel is The Cuckoo's Calling (in het Nederlands vertaald als Koekoeksjong, door Sabine Mutsaers). De verhalen staan op zich, maar het achtergrondverhaal over detective Cormoran Strike is beter te volgen als je ze in volgorde leest.

Received a proposal for a long-term project that sounded legit. Looked up the company on Payment Practices: several reports of people who were never paid for their work, so basically a scammer.

Always do your background checks!

For those who don't know Payment Practices: it's an online database with information about companies offering translation services. For an annual fee of €28 you can access the database and add your own experience with agencies. Well worth it to avoid scams that could cost you hundreds of euros...

And replace 'writing' with 'translation'. Because contrary to what a lot of people think translation isn't just a matter of replacing words or phrases. It takes creativity to produce a translation that reflects the style and images of the original, especially with creative texts, such as books (both fiction and non-fiction).

@jake2 @RogerRemacle @bookstodon Absolutely. Also, translators spot mistakes in the source text and correct them, and where necessary/appropriate adapt the translation to the target audience. No machine can do that.

Just to be clear: professional don't just add names to their that are not in the source text.

Also: another example of how translators are always mentioned when they (supposedly) got it wrong, but hardly ever when they have done a good job (in which case the author tends to get all the praise). Which is why I am not including a link to the article mentioning them by name.

I have been planning to integrate ChatGPT into a writing course I'm teaching. My idea was: once I have shown the students some features that make text coherent, we could ask the AI to revise some of their texts for coherence and some of these things would happen. Bc I expected it would know these patterns.

Fucks sake. I tried it on a paragraph last night …

@twobiscuits Of course it didn't create cohesion. ChatGPT doesn't understand text, all it does is copy words in a certain order based on algorithms and statistics.

@twobiscuits I sincerely hope so... In the meantime it is already fucking things up: so many experienced fellow translators who have had to find other jobs or simply decided not to wait until it gets worse.

I was reading this article because of the translation error, but then came across this:

'Earlier this year, an airline advised its customers to opt out of having an inflight meal, saying it is the “ethical choice”. ... . The carrier has now made it a permanent option on flight bookings worldwide, emphasising the sustainability benefits of avoiding a mid-flight lunch.'

When it comes to sustainability I think the inflight meal is the least if your worries... 🤦‍♀️

Film starts with a warning: "Contains tobacco depictions"

In the first few minutes, someone is murdered.

Since when do we need to be warned about "tobacco depictions" and not about violence? Because murder is now more normal or more accepted than smoking?

(And yes, I did expect murders in this film. I just think the warning is weird.)

Re an earlier toot, needs a set of verbs like . Verbing words like “it” (as someone did in a reply - “to it someone”) or “thou” (as is sometimes done when discussing speech) doesn’t feel right. Also, is there a equivalent of tutoyer?

@DrHyde In German it's called "duzen" (addressing someone with informal "du"). There's also "siezen", which means addressing someone with formal "Sie".

Don't use the word "translator" to refer to translation tools.

A is a highly skilled linguist who can translate a text for its specific use and target audience, taking care of cultural issues, localisation, and any other issues that might cause problems in translation.

A is an automated tool that can only reproduce a literal version of the original text. The result should never be used as a final text, as it can contain linguistic, factual, and/or cultural errors.

So an author discovers someone is selling AI-generated books under her name on Amazon and then Amazon (initially) claims they can't remove them because she hasn't trademarked her name...

The books have been removed by now, but probably only because the author, Jane Friedman, went public.
