Journalist: "So what do you think long-distance air travel is going to look like in 2050?"

Climate Scientist laughs derisively: "By 2050, most long-distance holiday destinations will be uninhabitable, so I expect the majority of long-distance air traffic to be non-existent by 2050."

Phew. Hadn't heard it THAT bleakly during a live interview yet.

Tech innovation in an era of environmental collapse: AI, bitcoin, vapes, earbuds

"Vapes electronic waste yet these manufactured electronics with rechargeable batteries are produced and shipped around the world. They are utilized and designed to be thrown out after use. Disposable vapes are single-use products powered by the same rechargeable lithium-ion batteries used in electric cars and iPhones."

    @jrconlin as someone who doesn't even use Ubuntu, I don't understand. Why do I keep hearing that snap-packaged programs inferior?

    danielquinn,
    @danielquinn@mastodon.social avatar

    @jrconlin that sounds brutal. I've heard that Ubuntu has been pushing this pretty hard and installing snaps when you use apt, which is enough for me to exclude them.

    1 more question though: Flatpaks are sandboxed too, right? Do they have the same problems?

    This year, democracy is on the ballot. Over 60 countries — home to half the globe’s population — will hold national elections in 2024.

    To ensure that everyone has access to accurate information before they cast their vote, we’ll offer free servers in countries with a history of or political interference in the weeks leading up to the elections:
    https://protonvpn.com/blog/free-servers-before-elections

    The servers will be switched from paid to free for the period of the election.

    I hear so many people say "any vote not for Biden is a vote for Trump."
    That is absolutely ridiculous.
    What if I didn't vote at all?
    If I choose to vote, I will vote for a party and candidate that represents my values. I will vote Green.
    Dems and MAGA both support more oil drilling. Dems and MAGA both support Israel and the genocide of Palestinians.
    Dems and MAGA both want more cars and more pollution. Fuck them both.

    danielquinn,
    @danielquinn@mastodon.social avatar

    @mattcaff @KawaTora these aren't "some policies". It's survival of the species and literal genocide. If your party can't have the right policy on either of those, what good are they?

    I'd like to give a conference talk about what infosec can learn about risk from outdoor recreation — kayaking, backcountry skiing, climbing, mountaineering, etc.

    A focus in these communities is “safety culture": finding ways to pursue inherently dangerous activities more safely. Lots of it translates to infosec!

    If you think this would be a good fit for your con, reach out! I'm not looking for special treatment, happy to put a proposal into a CFP, just not sure who might be interested.

    VSCode is popular with many professional software developers, but my poll indicates that JetBrains IDE products are the most popular. However, JetBrains met with negativity recently when they added (forced) AI assistant to their products. While AI-powered services have been overhyped, they come with concerns about LLM's security, legal risk, privacy, and ethics. JetBrains users demanding full removal of AI assistance from IDE https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/LLM-1760/Can-not-remove-Jetbrains-AI-Assistant-plugin-completely

    @nixCraft they claim that the AI assist is trained exclusively on your local code, but the suggestions it makes are nonsense, referencing variables that haven't been declared, etc. I turned it off. I still love their tools though, just not this new feature.

    @jrconlin the issue I have with Mozilla VPN is that unlike Mullvad, it requires an email address and credit card, so it doesn't really feel anonymous.

    Mullvad on the other hand gives you a numbered account and lets you pay with bitcoin or even cash.

    The weird thing is that Mozilla VPN is just running Mullvad under the hood, and I'd rather give Mozilla the money, but not under such conditions.

    Most Americans don’t know that Trump could use the Insurrection Act to deploy the military within cities and states if he returns to power. Write to your local media outlets and help raise awareness in your community about the dangers of a Trump second term: https://act.indivisible.org/lte/trump-insurrection-act-lte?source=mastodon&utm_medium=directpost

    I'm having a really hard time lately just being in a world so bent on self destruction. I think the worst part is that we're not even all in agreement around ideas like "burning down the world is insane" or "murdering children is bad".

    It was easy enough to not be a part of the problem, but we know that isn't enough, and I'm powerless to do much of anything else.

    So the world burns and children are murdered... and I'm watching my family put up a Christmas tree.

    In an effort to patch my laptop against , I had to figure out how to do firmware updates on it.

    Typically I just dual-boot and handle this in Windows, but this laptop is 100% Linux so that option was out.

    Turns out, all you have to do is fwupdmgr upgrade and everything Just Works™

    It's so much easier than Windows! I don't know why this still surprises me.
