In an effort to patch my laptop against , I had to figure out how to do firmware updates on it.

Typically I just dual-boot and handle this in Windows, but this laptop is 100% Linux so that option was out.

Turns out, all you have to do is fwupdmgr upgrade and everything Just Works™

It's so much easier than Windows! I don't know why this still surprises me.

@s31bz It's a recent ThinkPad X1. Admittedly, I have no way of knowing if the firmware updates applied included any protections.

Biologists of Mastodon, care to answer a dumb question? Here it is: Why do we breathe?

Like seriously, if it's O₂ going in, and CO₂ coming out, isn't the O₂ just serving as a carbon courier? Or is there something more interesting/elaborate going on where we actually use the O₂ to do something and the CO₂ is a byproduct? If it's the latter, what is it?

My whole life I thought I understood how this works, but my 4 year old asks one question and suddenly I'm confronted by my ignorance.

@raiderrobert I've found that Firefox's "Reader View" works well in these cases and it's available on Firefox Mobile as well. Just tapping that button strips out all the ads (and most pictures) and you get the recipe you're looking for.

I'm not excusing this design pattern, just offering my current work around.

In a few of my blog posts on right-to-repair culture, I've mentioned my 12-year-old Thinkpad T420

It is: indestructible

My six-year-old Macbook Pro just died, so I'm using the thinkpad while I await a replacement

This Thinkpad has outlived two of my top of the line Macbooks

It was built when my eldest son was six ... he's now in college

And it's still going

This is why we proposed a Wind Power Action Plan to give the EU wind industry the certainty to scale up, invest, and innovate in Europe.

The plan aims to accelerate the permitting procedures, improve auctions, help the industry access to finance and ensure a fair international environment for our companies.

In 2022, wind power supplied 16% of EU electricity. This figure should grow to 34% to reach our 2030 renewable energy target.

@EU_Commission this is great and all, but if you're not simultaneously taxing carbon to drive down production of fossil energy, all you're doing is adding more energy to the grid, not reducing the CO₂ we're putting into the atmosphere.

I just setup a monthly donation to . The recommendation is to take whatever you make in a single hour of the month and donate that much. Think of it as "one hour of work in support of disrupting the wheels of extractive capitalism" :-)

The formula I used:

Give it a shot. The amount arrived at should hurt just a little.

A friend of mine once had an excellent rant about public services. Something along the lines of:

It's not a business, it's a machine. Money goes into a hospital, and healthy people come out. Money goes into transit, and people move around. Money goes into the postal service, and packages get delivered.

If you're looking for profit, you're mistaking a machine for a business.

I, a straight person, have a question. I'm talking about homophobia in a draft blog piece, and what’s a good choice of word for the people that homophobes dislike and abuse? Has it got to the point where “queer” is respectful and appropriate? Is “LGBTQ” better? “Gender-diverse”? (I think I’m correct to think that “homophobe” has grown to include anti-trans and gender-related bigotries generally?) Who has written a really good essay on the subject? Thanks in advance.
