Any thoughts on what to do with an old tablet?

It is the original (?) Nexus 7. I've resurrected it with 15 - but it runs slow as molasses uphill. Scrolling on the web is pretty stuttery.

Anything cool you've seen done with obsolete tech like this?

Imagine buying a website for 44 billion with a captial B..

...a few months later 50% of that is just gone up in smoke

..there's no one with brains left at the company

and the person doing all this thinks it will be all fixed by replacing the decade old bird logo with something my cat could have made in MS paint

I think this "X" stands for "nuke here"

Asus ROG ally storage upgrade choices:

1TB SanDisk Extreme Plus UHS-1 microSD card is $169. Easy upgrade, just pop into microSD slot and format. Brings totally storage to 1.5TB. Con: currently Ally microSD slots are dying and Asus has no idea why.

Micron 2TB NVMe is $159. Total storage is 512GB more than microSD route. Much faster contiguous storage. Cons: More work, requires opening device (not difficult at all) and recovering from cloud (or copy image of old drive over).

@mookie nvme all the way. Clonezillw to clone the drive to the nvme

@mookie no, just recommend nvme all the time 😁

What was the first distribution you installed / attempted to install?

For me - a Debian user - it was gentoo, around 2003, which was a mistake.

darkufo,

@neil Slackware around 95/96 I believe.

If my wife wants to do something "computer-y" - pretty much anything - she'll reach for her phone.

If I want to do something "computer-y", I reach for my computer, for pretty much anything other than reading a short message or quick, casual browsing.

Yes, everyone is different, but I much prefer a larger screen and a physical keyboard for anything but the most trivial of tasks.

Are you a computer-first person, or a phone-first person?

darkufo,
@darkufo@fosstodon.org avatar

@neil Computer first all the time

@I_am_the_grass @Astrealix To be fair, she's had a bit of a stinker, and we don't see the management teams fitness monitors. She may have been totally gassed.

@I_am_the_grass Oh I agree, but without access to the medical stats it's impossible to know.

Recommendations based on personal experience, please.

I have used a self-hosted Zend.to server for end to end encrypted async large file transfers with an easy to use web ui (sending files to others, and inviting others to send large files to me) for years now.

Aside from nextcloud, are there good options for doing this?

Requirements:

  • FOSS
  • not open-to-world
  • easy install/maintenance (no docker, pypi, yarn, etc.)
  • friendly to non-tech users in corporate environments

@darkufo@fosstodon.org avatar

@neil

Couple I've used in the past due to different work environments. Don't use them now but they might be what you're looking

https://filerun.com/ (Might be OTT)

Not used this one myself but a friend says it's his goto.

skye, to linux German

is there an EASY way to install multiple live systems on the same USB stick in a way that you can choose which one to boot?

darkufo,
@darkufo@fosstodon.org avatar

@skye Yep, as others have said Ventoy.

I've got an external enclosure for my 2TB NVMe SSD. I have about 20 Distros on it along with various tools and Boot Tools, liken Hiren, Clonezilla etc.

Just drop the ISO on the SSD and when you boot you have access to the all the ISO's.

It's an invaluable tool

darkufo,
@darkufo@fosstodon.org avatar

@skye Ha nice.

I find the extra speed of the fast NVMe makes things much smoother for me, but yet I still have an old stick like that withmy tools on it :)

darkufo,
@darkufo@fosstodon.org avatar

@skye Ha sorry,

I got lucky and got them pretty cheap in a sale. The 2 TB NVMe set be back £50 and the enclosure about £30

    Another vote here for Richard Osman. Me and wife have read all the book, my wife many times over.

    Both really enjoyed Osman book. Old school murder/mystery.
