@davidihewlett it's not easy, but I buy only DRM free stuff. That is the only way I can be sure to own it. Everything else is only a rent.
I use GOG for PC Games, used Google music for music (where is the alternative now?) and only not legal things for movies. (where can I buy DRM free movies?)

@ij Good point...myself included...looks like nerdculture.de has stopped accepting users now too...I'm afraid that us twitter refugees are going to be making a mess here for a while before we figure it out...thanks for your help...and patience! So a basic Linux host and a basic account should do the trick to start?

Y’all, if you’re getting frustrated you’re not seeing the content you want to like news or intel you need on Mastodon, you really need to shift your thinking from algorithmic social media. Follower counts don’t matter much here. Likes do not matter to post reach. Without your interaction, you will just see a live FIFO firehose. Some quick fixes:

Hashtag your posts liberally and consistently, and follow key hashtags of interest to you. Hashtags matter a ton here to being seen.

Follow and also alert on accounts you always want to see content from.

Consider using the built in RSS feature for your feeds and for specific hashtags.

Consider switching to the more advanced UI in your preferences, so you can watch multiple filtered and unfiltered feeds. Or a different mobile app.

Use Fedifinder to follow all the accounts you followed on Twitter, and sync up your follow and block lists.

Avail yourself of the multiple public lists of hundreds of journalist accounts on Mastodon.

Admittedly I am Still trying to find my Mastodon legs here, but excited about features that extend its abilities beyond just an open-source twitter…any suggestions for how I can use it for my kid’s club? They are all on Discord.

Hey! Spent all day (technically night) fixing delayed feeds on mastodon.social and mastodon.online, both are back to normal now, I had to add more capacity. There's just so much more activity during peak hours, even with closed registrations!
