Just because you had your head in the sand for the entire presidency doesn’t mean there was “peace everywhere”

Kids were getting gassed in Syria.

There were 2,243 drone strikes in the first two years of Trump.

There was a failed coup in Venezuela.

Trump’s policy of deterrence by tweet allowed North Korea to fully develop ICBMs.

So weird. It’s like they’re just trying to scare the crap out of their base. 🤨

The reason you know Joe Biden isn’t an authoritarian is because you can say “Joe Biden is an authoritarian” (clearly incorrectly) and nothing will happen to you.

Looks like that WaPo cancelation was a good call.

@Snowshadow @TonyStark just cancelled my WaPo subscription. I've been unsubscribing their newsletters this week, anyway.

I'll miss some of their content. But it feels like the right thing to do, at this juncture.

I need your help . One of the classes I'm taking at the graduate level this semester is Religion & Science Fiction. I read more fantasy, and would like to do my research paper on something that's not obvious (like ST/BS5/Matrix/etc.) & I'd love to use more modern sf rather than the golden age classics.

Anyone have any interesting ideas for my research paper on regarding the intersection of religion and science fiction?

I can’t believe it took me this long to figure this out, but there are really a lot of people with loud political opinions who’ve never done any actual organizing.

Like have never attended a town hall, or a petition gathering convention, or gone door to door, or done even some shallow discussions with anyone, let alone some deep, years long dives. Not gone to a borough meeting or a planning commission hearing or a school board meeting.

Never gone to a march. Nada.

I really hope that changes.

deborahh,
@deborahh@mstdn.ca avatar

@GoatRoper @TonyStark those strategies are great. Since I'm at-risk & avoiding unmasked people, I need to participate in other ways, though.

I feel that social media, creatively used, can be a tool to mobilise progressives. What have you seen that works? Got ideas for me?

deborahh,
@deborahh@mstdn.ca avatar

@TonyStark @GoatRoper I'm in Canada. But we have our own mini-MAGAts here and I'm asking what's worked, on social media, for the US. Maybe there are useful tips there.

Thinkig: maybe I've missed something simple and effective. Hard to tell what's effective from outside the country.

▪ pass it on (for some, this may be less likely than before you were vaccinated) & so cause someone else hospitalisation or

"Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity. … "

"the way to discipline children — especially the children of others — is denying them food, books, love. That’s how you show them you care. … the strict-father brain believes it is demonstrating morality.

That’s why shaming will never really work. … It won’t change minds.

What might? Activating values that win over potentially persuadable people.… it’s far more effective to change the debate to progressive values, to reveal the real consequences of the right’s agenda."
