"I cannot be phased by being condescended to by old white men in legislative meetings. I have worked many years in infosec and I am dead inside" is an actual thing I said in an all-hands meeting yesterday.

evacide,
@evacide@hachyderm.io avatar

@Edelruth I was describing some recent meetings with legislators to my co-workers.

evacide,

@notroot As I have pointed out elsewhere, I will somehow survive this misuse. I don't even fix most of my typos anymore.

evacide,
@evacide@hachyderm.io avatar

@notroot Nah, I understand. I have the same problem.

i need to reorganize my workspace again because there's something infinitely sad about be looking at my unfinished creative projects and unread books, while on the 2nd meeting of the day with the same vendor

@lzg Answering emails. That is what I am doing with it.

If you, a white person, feel the need to disguise yourself as a black person for any goddamn reason, how about you just don't?

There is nothing more American than bragging that you know a bunch of languages because you can stumble your way through a restaurant menu and nothing more European than fluently speaking 3+ languages while apologizing for your accent.

evacide,
@evacide@hachyderm.io avatar

@joykill You are basically apologizing right now, which is entirely on brand.

evacide,
@evacide@hachyderm.io avatar

@Arcaik This guy's Madrid accent is priceless.

evacide,
@evacide@hachyderm.io avatar

@Arcaik You are correct.

A friend of mine with small children is trying to get out of an abusive relationship.

I would like to point her at good resources about digital security in her situation.

If anyone has expertise in this field who can give me solid recommendations, I would appreciate it very much.

*Yes, I'm aware of Widows 11 / Recall.

*I do not need uninformed opinions or speculation from anyone and especially not from men. Thank you for your reading comprehension.

@ShaulaEvans This is a good place to start <https://refugetechsafety.org/digitalbreakup/>, but if your friend has specific questions about her situation, she can contact me directly at eva at eff dot org and I'd be happy to talk to her.

As a person who enjoys live music, this is the kind of action I love to see.

“It is time to break up Live Nation-Ticketmaster,” US Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement announcing the lawsuit.

I keep writing "privacy for cats" instead of "privacy for cars" in my work calendar, which leads to a very different mental image of what my job looks like.

One day I will do a massive thread of just the worst digital privacy and security advice that people have given in my mentions.

evacide, to random
@evacide@hachyderm.io avatar

A lot of people who are not experts in domestic abuse think they're making a clever point by informing me that if an abuser has physical access & login credentials, the game's already over.

I am very tired and do not have the energy to explain why making spying easier for abusers is bad, actually.

evacide,
@evacide@hachyderm.io avatar

@coldclimate It takes a great deal of boldness and self confidence to come into my mentions and give privacy and security advice to people who were asking me and not them for their opinion.

@evacide@hachyderm.io avatar

"...a would-be hacker would need to gain physical access to your device, unlock it and sign in before they could access saved screenshots."

I've got some news for Microsoft about how domestic abuse works.

@wrosecrans This feature is being implemented because there were zero survivors of domestic abuse involved the high-level decision-making.

"I'm not listening to any more Dune takes from a guy who can't tell CHOAM from the Landsraad!" is a perfectly normal thing to yell while making brunch.

the idea that someone flashes their status by wearing an expensive watch is so beyond me, it's like reading about the behavior of another species. I have never, ever noticed an expensive watch. maybe a cool one, with a lil calculator.

evacide,
@evacide@hachyderm.io avatar

@lzg Have you read The Confidence Game? There is a whole chapter on this.

Threat models matter.

When a platform/service/app tells you they are “private” or “secure” always ask “from whom?”

Criminals, domestic abusers, law enforcement, data brokers, and intelligence agencies are all different attackers with very different capabilities.

evacide, to random
@evacide@hachyderm.io avatar

When I talk about digital privacy, there is always some smug genius who shrugs and tells me, "Who cares? We all know we don't have any privacy anyway." Nothing could be more wrong. Convincing you that the fight is already over to the way people in power get you to stop resisting.

"Cisgender is a slur" has some real "people pointing out racist behavior are the real racists" energy to it.
