Ember (she/her) - demigirl software developer.
Admin of transfem.social and shonk.social.

Hello! I'm Ember - a transfem foxgirl programmer. My interests are LGBT+ / queer life, programming, retrocomputing, anime, PC gaming, and TTRPGs. I'm also very interested in the future of federated social media and follow that topic closely. Feel free to reach out if you'd like to chat about any of these - this girl is a nerd and proud of it! I also welcome DMs from anyone questioning their gender or identity. I've been there, I know how hard it can be.

Follows are locked (meaning that they require manual approval), but feel free to send a request! I only ask that you have a bio and/or a few public posts for a basic vibe check.

:heart_trans: Important safety announcement for transfem.social :heart_trans:

Hi friends! A known bad actor is back on fedi after a long hiatus. Please report any profiles with usernames like "way2cute" or "waytoocutexo", as these are entirely fake accounts made for the purpose of catfishing. Do not engage with this user, and do not accept his follow requests. Just report and let us handle it.

I'll have more details soon, but I need to dig up some very old notes from last time he was active. Stay safe out there!

Please please please add a CW to any news stories about transphobia or other anti-trans bigotry. This is doubly important if it involves violence or politics. Remember, many trans people gather here to escape from transphobia / transmisia in our daily lives. Please respect our mental health by using the CW feature! :neofox_pleading:

Good morning valued customers! I'm Ember, admin of transfem.social. I'm here today with a big announcement regarding the exciting new future of our platform.

Beginning today (April 1, 2024), transfem.social and the transfem.org network have partnered with Microsoft to build a new generation of content-centric social media! Our new, patented Microsoft Sharkey (TM) 11 update brings a variety of cutting-edge features to maximize engagement and expand your commercial reach.

Today's update brings you many new features, including:

  • Sponsored posts - see the latest and greatest right at the top of your home feed.
  • New recommended timeline - find the most relevant posts using AI intelligence.
  • Enhanced privacy settings - choose between "share data" and "ask again later" for all tracking and advertisements.
  • Integration with other Microsoft products - connect to Outlook (TM) and GitHub (TM) to see updates right in your notification sidebar.
  • Sign in with Microsoft - all legacy Sharkey accounts have been upgraded to a free Microsoft account.
  • XBOX Gaming support - Clicker, Bubble Game, and Mahjong have been replaced with new ad-funded versions. All existing users will receive 10 free pulls in each game!
  • Clippy sub-module - all posts are verified for correct and format English grammar. Alternate language packs can be purchased for an additional fee.
  • Enhanced search - Use Bing to instantly search the entire fediverse - including private posts! Don't know what you want? That's OK, Cortana is here to bring you Microsoft's recommended results for any search query.
  • Cloud Drive - Microsoft Sharkey's (TM) drive has been fully overhauled. All uploaded media is now backed by Microsoft OneDrive, including automated AI analysis to improve your Sharkey experience.

Of course, I can't forget the single best feature of Microsoft Sharkey (TM) 11 - a brand new re-imagined Ai-chan! In addition to a whole new look, Ai is now backed by Cortana and Copilot. Your new posting companion can help you read, write, and edit any text or media upload. All you have to do is ask - Ai is always listening for her catchphrase "hey Ai!". Say goodbye to typing, and say hello to a new generation of voice-assistant fedi!

As a part of this new era, Sharkey will transition to a source-available model. Instances of less than 100 users can obtain a free license, while larger organizations should contact sales to request a quote. This new model will alleviate funding concerns and ensure that Sharkey is financially prepared for a web 3 future.

Thank you all for your trust and patience as we move forward into a greater future. I hope you enjoy it!

I have only one request for any Misskey fork:

fEmber, to accessibility

:heart_trans: small request / reminder about photo-sensitivity :heart_trans:

Hi friends! Ember here with a quick reminder to please be careful with media - especially animated media - that includes any of the following:

  • bright lights / colors
  • flashing or pulsing
  • gradient effects or patterns
  • rapid motion, movement, or animation

All of these can be uncomfortable or physically painful to people with photo-sensitivity. In some cases, such media can even trigger a migraine or seizure. When posting anything like that, please be sure to include a content warning on the post. Be especially careful with emoji reactions, as these may appear outside of the content warning. If you're ever in doubt, then err on the side of caution and add a content warning. You can also reach out to me or another member of staff for advice.

Thank you for understanding, and for helping to keep our instance safe and inclusive. :heart_trans:

fEmber, to sysadmin

:heart_trans: Request for IT assistance :heart_trans:

Hi friends! Our SysAdmins are still blocked by a network issue that prevents our migration to the new servers. We are running out of ideas and would appreciate any possible support. If you have or know someone who has experience with IPv6 networks, then please contact me or another member of our staff. We would earnestly appreciate any help or advice!

The problem, as I understand it, is that traffic fails to pass through our OPNSense firewall. We have a /48 block allocated on the WAN side, and want to expose a public IP from the LAN. See this reply for a longer description and some discussion.

Boosts appreciated! 💙

Let's all give a big thanks to Marie, the lead developer of the Sharkey instance software that we use here on transfem.social. Her upgrades to the user experience have made this a comfier and more accessible space, even as she spends long hours tracking down and fixing bugs. Additionally, she's done extensive work to improve the moderation and administrative controls that our staff uses to keep things running smoothly. Our community is safer than ever thanks to her hard work behind the scenes.

It's difficult and important work, but very few people even know about it. Let's give her some credit for all the long hours and hard work. Thank you @Marie!

:heart_trans: Welcome guide for new Tumblr friends :heart_trans:

Hi all! I'm making this post that will eventually be edited to have a proper guide, but for now: see replies where I will be posting answers to questions that different people have asked. Sorry for the bad formatting and confusing language - I'm writing these in a hurry. :neofox_laugh_sweat: In any case, I hope this can be of some help!

fEmber, to trans

This, right here, is why I do what I do. We [trans people] will never be safe on corporate social media. Even a platform that advertises itself as "the queerest place on the internet" will happily nuke our accounts with no warning or chance to appeal.

And so I push through the stress and burnout to continue one of the hardest things I've ever done. Running this instance is a daily struggle, but it's worth it. We've suffered enough under hostile moderation and apathetic corporations, so now it's time to ensure our own protection.

Transfem.social is and always will be a safe space for marginalized people. That's my promise, and that's the goal that keeps me pressing forward.

🏳️‍⚧️ Safety tip for Transfem.Social members: 🏳️‍⚧️

Hi friends! Ember here with a small suggestion / reminder for online safety. This is not an instance rule, to be clear, just something that I strongly recommend for online personal safety.

In short - never share your personal information online!
We're a friendly, close-knit community here, but that doesn't make it safe to post personal details. Bad-faith actors sometimes sneak into communities like ours, looking for vulnerable people to stalk and harass. Fedi, in particular, has a problem of hateful people operating "scrapers" that use bots to scan the federated timeline and capture any information on marginalized people. This gets passed on to dangerous groups like KiwiFarms and used for targeted harassment.

Fortunately, you can resist this by limiting what types of personal information you share online. In particular, here are some things that you should never reveal:

  • Your legal name(s)
  • Your birth date
  • Your address (even city of residence)
  • Photos of your house (especially the exterior)
  • Your phone number
  • Where you work

There's also some which are a bit less critical, but I still strongly recommend against sharing. If you want to publish one of these, then please take the time to complete a calculated risk assessment!

  • Selfies / other photos showing your face
  • Your exact age (and be careful with ranges)
  • Where you went to school / college
  • Details of businesses / organizations you visit
  • Uncommon medical conditions (doctors get hacked a lot)

This may seem like a lot, but I promise you - it's a small price to pay for online safety! There are horrible people out there, and they'd like nothing more than to make us suffer. Let's make sure that doesn't happen!

Hi friends! I want to thank you all for helping us reach this incredible milestone. transfem.social would be nothing without all you lovely people who fill our timeline with memes, shitposts, and sharp commentary on the greater queer experience within modern society.

Our local timeline is always a treat, filled with honest expressions of countless unique life experiences. Scrolling through, I see thread after thread of earnest and friendly conversations between friends and strangers alike. This community has become a truly beautiful place, and I'm honored to be here as your admin. Thank you, and I hope you continue to enjoy our little corner of the internet!

YouTube recommended me a short of of someone’s Tesla self-driving. The whole video was about how amazing it was that the car safely undertook an “unprotected” left turn (which would be a right turn for me) across three lanes of traffic.

I thought “oh, that’s cool” and then I realised that, hang on, I can execute this manoeuvre safely and without fanfare and have done so multiple times. Why is it a big deal when a robot does it?

Anyway, despite the narrator’s showboating about how smart his car is, he overlooked something.

The car turned left into the wrong lane.

Due to a bug in our Sharkey server software, transfem.social will be temporarily blocking all Lemmy instances. Most Lemmy posts cannot be loaded correctly, and will instead cause major performance issues and delay other, non-lemmy posts by a significant factor.

These instances have not done anything wrong, and we will revert the blocks when the bug is fixed. This is only a workaround for a technical issue. We apologize for the inconvenience!

fEmber,

I just wish I had access to the reverse proxy so I didn't have to manually block every instance :neofox_woozy:

fEmber,

it's working! :awoodance:

Just to avoid any confusion: we are not shutting down transfem.social or shonk.social. Only transwo.men will shut down.
