Have you ever noticed an account on here labelled "Automated" or "Bot"?

It means the account is a bot, operating automatically without a human doing the posting.

This might sound odd, but there are many useful and entertaining , for example posting sports results or weather bulletins or public domain art. Other bots run interactive games of chess or D&D campaigns or text adventures.

Find out more at:

...and some good bots to follow:

Is there a workaround watching videos from a account directly within the @megalodon app like it is possible exploring with the browser? 💝🙏

@trmsc @megalodon

If you paste the web address of a PeerTube video into the search box, it should appear as a post?

Does it show an embedded video when you do that?

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@trmsc

It might be that Megalodon hasn't implemented embedded videos yet? @megalodon might be able to comment?

@sheislaurence

That's definitely a bug.

There is another bug where link previews weren't rendering anchor links (with # in them) at all, and perhaps this new bug is a result of an attempt to correct the anchor text bug?

You're on mastodon.social so the devs often use it for experimental code which may not work properly. Perhaps this is some of that experimental code?

Workaround for this would be to leave out the anchor part of the link (the # sign).

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@sheislaurence

I think I know what the problem is, it's nothing to do with Mastodon.

The website has set the incorrect value for its metadata. The website's source code currently says:

<meta property="og:url" content="notechforapartheid.com">

It should have an https:// before the web address. This tag is what determines the link in the preview, and it's currently giving the wrong address for previews.

If you can contact the website owners, they are the only ones who can fix this.

If you're new here, there's a tradition that you make post telling the world a bit about your account with the hashtag

(You don't have to, it's just a fun little thing on here that many choose to do!)

You can also do this if you've been here a while with the hashtag

Introduction posts are also handy to pin on your profile so people browsing your account can quickly see what you're about. More info about how to pin posts here: https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-pin-my-posts-on-my-mastodon-profile/

Any tips on getting posts to federate on ?

@feditips

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@limebar

Unfortunately seems to be a bug with an open issue on Pixelfed's github:

https://github.com/pixelfed/pixelfed/issues/4056

The accounts can be followed from Pixelfed, but the videos don't federate.

Might be worth asking Pixelfed itself about this?

Wow, nice! Very pro-active, you weren't even tagged 👍

You can create threads on Mastodon using the traditional method:

  1. Post first part of thread
  2. Reply to first part with second part
  3. Reply to second part with third etc

Some third-party apps and services also have thread creation tools.

It's a good idea to number threads so that people who notice one part will explore the rest.

Also, set first post to "public" visibility but replies to "unlisted", to avoid filling public timelines.

Lots more info on threads at https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-post-a-thread-on-mastodon/

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@1dalm

It depends what software your admin is running.

There's no official admin setting in Mastodon to adjust the character limit so it has to be done unofficially (by fiddling with the software's files outside the graphic interface), or the server has to switch to a fork like Glitch.

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@Joe_Hill

Usually if you click on any post in a thread it opens the entire thread?

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@SmartmanApps @Joe_Hill

Yeah, I've just tried this again on the official Mastodon app and it definitely opens the entire thread whichever post you click on.

There is no need to post all replies to the first post.

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@SmartmanApps

Yes, as far as I know all the apps take you to the thread if you click on a post from within the thread.

Unlisted is a public visibility setting, it just means it doesn't show up on the Federated and Local timelines.

I normally do similar thing with notepad to do a long thread in advance. There are also apps and services that will do this for you.

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@SmartmanApps @Joe_Hill

Unlisted is exactly the same as public, except it doesn't show up in hashtag searches or the Federated or Local timelines.

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

p.s. Just to clarify, the "unlisted" visibility setting for posts is almost exactly like the public setting, anyone can see it and share it.

The only difference is unlisted posts don't show up on the Federated or Local timelines, and don't show up in hashtag searches.

More info about post visibility settings:

https://fedi.tips/who-can-see-my-posts-in-mastodon-how-do-i-send-dms-in-mastodon/

(This post is itself on the "unlisted" visibility setting, so you can see exactly how visible it is.)

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@nazokiyoubinbou

It will show up on your Home timeline if you're following me, but it won't show up on your Federated timeline (obviously not hugely relevant on mastodon.social though as Federated is unusable there 😀 ) or Local if you were on same server as me.

It also won't show up in full text searches or trending posts.

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@nazokiyoubinbou

No worries!

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@NilaJones

You can make your posts only visible to your followers by doing the following two things:

  1. Lock your account so that you have to approve who follows you (more info: https://fedi.tips/restricting-who-can-follow-you-in-mastodon/)

  2. Set your default posting visibility to followers-only (more info: https://fedi.tips/who-can-see-my-posts-in-mastodon-how-do-i-send-dms-in-mastodon/)

If you do both these things, only your followers will see your posts and only people you approve will be able to follow you.

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@t_i_m @potungthul

Yeah, the name for "unlisted" is sort of misleading.

Unlisted is still basically a public post, anyone can see unlisted posts, even people who don't have an account on here.

They will not see the post in search results on here, but they might still come across unlisted posts in threads for example, or if someone shares an unlisted post.

The only post visibilities which restrict who can see them are "followers only" and "mentions only".

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@t_i_m @potungthul

By the way, when I mention "federated" and "local" timelines, I don't mean your home timeline. There's a guide to the timelines here: https://fedi.tips/what-are-the-local-federated-home-timelines-how-do-i-stop-them-scrolling-too-quickly/

I need to update the article slightly though as Local and Federated are now both in the "Live Feeds" section.

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@NilaJones

There is no visibility setting that makes a post visible to everyone but requires people to log in to see it.

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@helenclayton @NilaJones

Public posts would still be visible to people who don't have an account.

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@xigoi @NilaJones

Yeah, if you are concerned about unwanted people seeing a post would strongly recommend follower-only posts and switching on follower-screening.

Otherwise anyone can sign up and see the post.

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@synkr3tyk

Unlisted will show up in your Home timeline if someone you follow posts it or shares it, that's intended behaviour.

It just doesn't show up on the "Local" and "Federated" timelines, or in any searches.

More info about the different timelines here:

https://fedi.tips/what-are-the-local-federated-home-timelines-how-do-i-stop-them-scrolling-too-quickly/

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@NilaJones

Yes, unlisted posts are visible to everyone including people not logged in. (There's a good reason for this, it makes original pages easy to access: https://fedi.tips/what-are-original-pages-in-mastodon/)

The only difference between unlisted and public modes is the unlisted ones don't show up on Mastodon searches or Mastodon's "Federated" and "Local" timelines.

Do you need help with using Mastodon and the Fediverse? Especially if you're a beginner or unsure about techy things?

You can ask by messaging me or replying to this thread, and I'll try to help or find someone else who can help. Don't worry if a question seems silly or basic!

You can also look things up on the guide at https://fedi.tips, which has an "essentials" section at the top and a complete list of answered questions below that.
