You can create threads on Mastodon using the traditional method:

  1. Post first part of thread
  2. Reply to first part with second part
  3. Reply to second part with third etc

Some third-party apps and services also have thread creation tools.

It's a good idea to number threads so that people who notice one part will explore the rest.

Also, set first post to "public" visibility but replies to "unlisted", to avoid filling public timelines.

Lots more info on threads at https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-post-a-thread-on-mastodon/

Reminder that you don't need to use your real/legal name on here. You can call yourself whatever you want (as long as you're not impersonating someone else).

You also don't need to have a photo of yourself, or any photo at all. Blind users often don't use photos on profiles, so don't be surprised if you see a profile with an empty space. An empty picture is not a sign of a spammer on here.

The only info you need when signing up is a working email address, and only your server's admin sees it.

I assume they mean in the "Bio" section, where you can put the text description for your account.

feditips,

@Neverfadingwood

Agreed. The bio text needs to contain something to at least let people know you're a human being.

Anybody know why within the Discover feature, the Posts tab is almost entirely made up of pixelfed.social accounts, whereas the People tab seems to be from your local instance? I have four Pixelfed accounts, each on a different instance, and the Discover / Posts tab results are identical for all of them.

Is that by design?

I’m seeing this while using the Pixelfed app on an iPad, if that matters.

why is so slow to show images? Mostly on my phone, it often takes minutes for an image to appear. Is that the server I use, my phone, or just how the fediverse works?

@andrew @feditips

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@thegardendude @plantarum

Yeah, sounds like a particular server is being slow?

If you have another account on a different server, you can test this out to compare their speeds.

In case you missed it, you can turn any blog into a server on the Fediverse, so that people on Mastodon etc will be able to follow your blog.

There's lots of info on how to do this (plus common questions anwered) at:

➡️ https://fedi.tips/wordpress-turning-your-blog-into-a-fediverse-server/

The software that makes this possible is called "ActivityPub for WordPress", it's just been updated to v 1.3.0 now with support for threaded comments:

Is there a way to add a content warning to a boost?

I found a 10 minute vlog on a PeerTube instance (it showed on Mastodon). I boosted it.

But, it did contain a scene that might upset some. I had wanted to put a content warning on the boost. But, I didn't see a way to do this. So, I unboosted it.

On the original PeerTube post, there was a content warning noted in the description. That did not show up in the Mastodon post. Is there a way to link CWs from PeerTube to Mastodon?

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@SusanHR @markgrieveson

No, there's no way to CW a boost because it might be misused to quote toot:

https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-content-warnings-cws-on-mastodon-and-the-fediverse/

One suggested workaround is to have a CW reply to the thing you want to boost, and boost that reply.

Regarding videos specifically, they really ought to have their warning at the start within the video itself rather than just in the description. Videos that are embedded will not have a description, and warnings there will be missed.

is a type of Fediverse server for hosting video and audio. It's free open source software, so anyone can set up their own server (just like Mastodon).

Because anyone can start their own server, it's extra-important that there are safe ways to discover and search nice videos on PeerTube.

I've tried to create a safe PeerTube search/discovery service at:

➡️ https://fedi.video

If you want to know more about how to use PeerTube see here:

➡️ https://fedi.tips/peertube-video-hosting-on-the-fediverse/

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@JoKingly

Yeah, the downside of software that anyone can install is some people set up servers full of nastiness, conspiracy theories etc.

This is such a shame as there are lots of good accounts on PeerTube too, so I'm trying to manually curate just the good stuff on fedi.video.

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

p.s. If you want to see interesting PeerTube videos boosted on Mastodon etc, you can follow @FediVideo

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@fakeplastictree

I'm not a sysadmin, I use a managed hosting provider for my instance, so I don't have expertise on bandwidth. I haven't had any specific bandwidth restrictions or estimations mentioned by my provider.

The amount that p2p helps depends on whether people are viewing the same version of the same video at the same time. If they are, then the p2p system helps out, and you'll see this with the "peers" number going up on the video itself.

If you want to screen who follows your account on Mastodon:

  1. Log in through your server’s website or Mastodon web app
  2. Click on your profile image to go to your profile page
  3. Click on "Edit profile"
  4. Click on "Privacy and Reach" tab
  5. UN-tick box marked "Automatically accept new followers"
  6. Click "Save changes" at bottom of page

Any new follows will need your approval, and a padlock 🔒 will appear on your profile.

More info about this on fedi.tips website: https://fedi.tips/restricting-who-can-follow-you-in-mastodon/

Thinking for photographers:

How would it work to open a Pixelfed account as well as my usual one? Is there a point?

When I add people from, for example, https://pixelfed.fr , I can follow them, but I don't see any of their content on their profile unless I'm on a browser. Why is that?

What do you think?

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@EllieK

"I can follow them, but I don't see any of their content on their profile unless I'm on a browser."

You should be able to see all the posts of a Pixelfed account made after at least one person from your server followed that account. For example can you see the posts on @Iancylkowski ?

If no one on your server has followed or shared them before, then you won't see their past posts, but this is a general issue on all types of account rather than just Pixelfed:

https://fedi.tips/why-does-someones-account-page-look-completely-blank-is-it-really-blank/

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@EllieK

Some people prefer the interface and features on Pixelfed servers, but many photographers use Mastodon.

As you can follow Pixelfed accounts from Mastodon, and Mastodon from Pixelfed, it is fine to use whichever one you prefer because people will still be able to follow you even if they're on the other.

In case you missed it, the Fediverse has an alternative to Amazon's Goodreads called BookWyrm, which is a social reading platform.

Existing Goodreads users can import their data into BookWyrm.

BookWyrm's entry on fedi.tips is now updated with common questions answered:

@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

Have you tried using Mastodon, Pixelfed, PeerTube, BookWyrm etc through web apps yet?

Web apps are sophisticated websites that can be installed on your phone or tablet, and once installed they act like apps (for example they can use your phone's notifications).

They're very easy to install and use, easier than app stores! There's a complete guide here:

➡️ https://fedi.tips/how-to-install-web-apps-for-mastodon-and-the-fediverse/

Web apps aren't just bookmarks any more. If you haven't tried them lately, this might be a good time to have a go.

You can customise your Mastodon profile page to include text, images, animations and links to websites, other accounts etc. Links can also be verified as belonging to you, which makes them handy in verifying your identity.

Do you know a PeerTube instance where we could upload Solarus video tutorials instead of using YouTube?

Preferably an instance for game dev or FOSS projects, if possible.

Do you need help with using Mastodon and the Fediverse? Especially if you're a beginner or unsure about techy things?

You can ask by messaging me or replying to this thread, and I'll try to help or find someone else who can help. Don't worry if a question seems silly or basic!

You can also look things up on the guide at https://fedi.tips, which has an "essentials" section at the top and a complete list of answered questions below that.

@Littlebobbytables

I'm not sure why Pixelfed's would be shorter than Mastodon's, maybe someone at @pixelfed can answer?

There's usually always some kind of limit though?

Federating just means the servers can cope with linking up to other servers, they may not necessarily have identical features. (For example some servers have character limits in the thousands, and these will display correctly on Mastodon, but Mastodon usually restricts posts to 500 characters.)

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@Littlebobbytables @pixelfed

It sounds like you'll just have to use a shorter name?

They'll still be two totally separate accounts by the way, even if they had the same name.

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@Littlebobbytables @pixelfed

Federating just means there are lots of providers who connect to each other, like phone companies. You can call people on other phone companies because even rival phone companies are federated together.

The idea on here is if one provider is bad, you can switch to another provider without losing your followers and follows.
