@osma @randahl We can't talk about the Red Army, because the “mostly minorities“ is bullshit. Out of 34 millions soldiers that fought in WW II., 8 millions were non-slavic minorities, and 30% of the population of the Soviet Union was non-slavic, at least in 1989, so the non-slavic minorities were probably underrepresented.

  • Russia is not catholic, but orthodox
  • Russia uses a different alphabet and a different slavic language
  • Russia and Prussia once, or twice or even more often divided Poland

@randahl Democracies aren't good at fighting longer wars. The war with Putin, supporting Ukraine, isn't going that well.

Trump's politics are wrong in so many layers that the errors start to cancel out. Biden's politics still are wrong, wrong in a straight forward way, but still wrong. International security is not the product of a strong block vs. the rest of the world, but of taking the rest of the world and their concerns into account and avoiding conflicts instead of winning them.

@randahl No, the Soviet Union did most of the fighting, and had far more deaths than all the others combined. The Wehrmacht crumbled in Stalingrad, D-Day was 2 years later.

Without the SU, the west allies managed a tie in the fight vs. North Korea and China, and lost in Vietnam.

@osma @randahl Weapon production is no problem, it's just like any other industrial production.

I also like to point out that while France and GB were democratic in the homeland, they had lots of colonies which were ruled authoritarian. De Gaulle’s soldiers came all from that part, and for GB, those soldiers (especially the Gurkhas) were important, too.

And don't confuse losses with deaths: USA had 400k deaths, and 700k wounded that couldn't continue fighting.

Sure, TikTok is terrible in many ways. But the hypocrisy of its critics, especially members of Congress, is almost beyond belief.

The problem with TikTok is the same one we have with countless other Internet products: They are relentless violators of our privacy and security.

Fix that, and you've fixed TikTok.

Democrats are just as bad as Republicans on this. And so is Big Journalism, which mostly just amplifies the lies.

This is a moral panic with a mercantile edge.

@shoq @dangillmor But we HAVE found a way to convince China to install renewables in record speed. It started with Germany having a plan to do so, which lasted for 10 years until a conservative government ruined it. At that point in time, China had already ramped up RE production and figured out that copying what Germany did was a good idea.

If you want to convince others of what is a good idea, live it yourself, and set a good example. The West's enshittet Internet isn't.

@shoq @dangillmor They don't do a single thing strategy. About half of China's district heating system still is coal fired boilers, and even if you replace that with a modern, coal fired combined heat and power solution, it results in less CO2 emitted.

There's no time to wait for the one single perfect strategy, you need to do all combined, as fast as possible. And export it, because the rest of the world does nothing.

Warum für JEDES Alter aus Sicht eines : Ein ganz normaler Tag: Ein Senior legt mir bei der Anamnese eine Medikamentenliste mit 24 (!) verschiedenen Präparaten vor, die er täglich zu nehmen hat. Sehleistung, vollkorrigiert, bei 20%.
Eine 16-Jährige schafft beim Führerscheinsehtest nichtmal die Kontrollreihe (32%). „Brille? Auf keinen Fall!“
Div. Menschen mit kaputter, aber ohne Zweitbrille…
Die wollen alle Autofahren. Die Liste ist beliebig verlängerbar.

@Hiker @arthurdent Wenn du deutlich unterschiedliche Sehfähigkeit auf deinen Augen hast, schaltet das Hirn das schlechte Auge ab, und du siehst kein 3D. Die fehlende 3D-Sicht auf die Nähe wirkt sich am Ende auch auf die Verarbeitung aus.

Ein Klassenkamerad wurde mit der Diagnose ausgemustert, und hat sich ein paar Jahre später um einen Baum gewickelt.

Fehlende 3D-Sicht ist nur für Piloten und Busfahrer „wichtig“, wobei auch dort nur der indirekte Effekt auf die Verarbeitung zählt.

@Hiker @arthurdent Vor 30 Jahren gab es noch eine Wehrpflicht, und eine Musterung. Er war untauglich, also ausgemustert.

Rechtlich darf man so nicht fliegen oder Bus fahren, aber sehr wohl mit seinem Auto die Gegend unsicher machen.

Tatsächlich kann man halt weder das eine noch das andere sicher. Und die Untauglichkeit für den Wehrdienst zeigt das halt auch.

Aber „lieber nicht regieren als schlecht regieren“ war halt schon die perfekte Selbstbeschreibung.

@mina @HistoPol Wenn ich das richtig verstanden habe, gibt es Verzögerungen bei den natürlichen CO2-Senken, insbesondere im Ozean, und Verzögerungen durch Kipppunkte, die einmal überschritten langsam zu weiterer Erwärmung führen.

Je nachdem, was stärker ist, kann es durchaus sofort aufhören mit der Erwärmung, wenn das CO2 wieder konstant ist.

@HistoPol @mina An der Stelle ist sich die Wissenschaft noch nicht ganz einig, womöglich hat der Einschlag am indischen Dekkan-Trapp zu einem sehr starken Ausbruch geführt, und beides zusammen war dann doch zu viel.

Neben dem Sibirischen Trapp gibt's noch den Emeishan-Trapp, die beide zeitlich mit einem Massenaussterben korrelieren, und dann noch den Dekkan-Trapp…
