Here's a question I haven't been able to find an answer to: Can someone convicted of felony in New York vote in Florida?

gadgetboy,
@gadgetboy@gadgetboy.social avatar

@TNLNYC A felony is a felony, regardless of the state. Florida does not allow convicted felons to vote.

    @SwiftOnSecurity I recently read that only 9% of our plastic in the US gets recycled. The rest gets incinerated or put into landfills. Shameful.

    I'm quoted in this @arstechnica piece about that recent "AI generated" George Carlin special

    I don't think it was written by AI

    I found the whole thing grossly disrespectful, but I do slightly appreciate the meta-joke here that the AI generated text is fake and was actually written by humans

    @ramsey @simon I had the same thought. Then again, if it was a parody, what would be the difference between an AI and an impersonator? This is all so murky, right now.

    The thing that blows my mind about publisher CMS use in general is that there's no real alternative to WordPress. Impressive to see how this happened - and in an open source context where someone absolutely could build something new and 100% compatible.

    @ben There are plenty of alternatives. They just don’t have:

    Broad Developer Support
    A Plugin for Everything ™
    Modest Hosting Requirements (this one could be debated)
    Turnkey SaaS Hosting
    Good UX for Contributors
    Probably a bunch of other things that I’m missing…

    The NY Times doesn’t use the words “dictatorship” or “autocracy” or “authoritarian,” because that’s not their way. But, with some good reporting, they show that Trump plans to make himself dictator. He has calculated that he can reveal some of his plan in advance, to minimize the shock of the transition to complete autocracy.

    He has calculated that no Republican will object. They will be his enablers.

    Every day corporation do something worse and worse and they wind up paying less and less in fines

    You want fines? Start at 100% of what they gained from their misdeeds

    And if corporations are people then punish them like people. Corporate death penalty (judicial dissolution) for the worst offenders

    When the punishment for a crime is a fine then the laws only apply to the poor.

    🇺🇸

    gadgetboy,
    @gadgetboy@gadgetboy.social avatar

    @flexghost Fines should be based on a percentage of gross revenue. The bigger the company, the more they will pay. 10% of Facebook’s gross revenue would be $3.3 BILLION. Now we’re talking.

    Leading causes of death in the US. remains #4 in 2022, but I don't think that's the whole story. Notice the increase in accidents? COVID is known to damage brains. Or the increase in heart disease and strokes? COVID also harms hearts and blood vessels. No significant increase in cancer, yet, but we may week learn COVID is oncogenic in the years to come. Our goal in 2023 and beyond must be to get infected as infrequently as possible, not invite many infections per year.

    Second, go to Preferences > Administration> Server Settings > Content Retention and set the values for "Media cache retention period" and "Content cache retention period" to something very short, like 3 days.

    Finally, consider off-loading this work to a service provider like masto.host. You don't have to admin the site to run your own node.
