@mivox Indeed 😕 disturbing to see this unfold, as if in slow motion. And yet, arriving at this point.

"The Kent State shootings were the killing of four and wounding of nine unarmed college students by the Ohio National Guard on the Kent State University campus. The shootings took place on May 4, 1970, during a rally opposing the expanding involvement of the Vietnam War into Cambodia by United States military forces as well as protesting the National Guard presence on campus and the draft."

Whether I see auras, you ask?

Yes, I love seeing auras!

Truly one of 3M's best products.

hko,
@hko@mastodon.social avatar

@larsmb .. which reminds me that I want to figure out if, and which variant of 3M 6000 series "Half Facepiece Respirators" I might want to try. I'm considering exploring those for longer transit times.

If you have experience with those, I'd love to hear any input and thoughts (also from anyone else, of course)!

https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/worker-health-safety-us/covid19/
looks like a good entry point. The bottom part of the page has some pointers for this respirator range, if anyone wonders what I'm talking about.

Loved watching Christiane Amanpour growing up. But she got this all wrong. Brutal erasure to say that there are no independent journos in Gaza (because 🇵🇸 journalists apparently can't be independent).

The Middle East Eye (this clip is their's btw) & Al Jazeera have award winning teams in Gaza composed of locals closer to the story than any westerner could be. But go ahead & waltz into Gaza, claim to be the eyes/ears of the world while totally lost without the Palestinian fixers flanking you.

World Central Kitchen is devastated to confirm seven members of our team have been killed in an IDF strike in Gaza.

Despite coordinating movements with the IDF, the convoy was hit

This is not only an attack against WCK, this is an attack on humanitarian organizations showing up in the most dire of situations where food is being used as a weapon of war. This is unforgivable

The seven killed are from Australia, Poland, UK, US, Canada, and Palestine.

@aral linking to an archived version of a related Hebrew-language article in Haaretz, for reference:

https://archive.ph/WQwru#selection-1033.0-1039.354

This article seems to quote official sources saying that the WCK group was the target of three successive drone strikes, over the course of minutes.

@hko@mastodon.social avatar

Apparently the humanitarian workers of World Central Kitchen who were killed in Gaza this past night were not hit by just one strike, but rather a series of three drone strikes over the course of multiple minutes.

hko,
@hko@mastodon.social avatar

@mivox based on https://mastodon.social/@hko/112201658064017423, my impression is that the official stance is, roughly:

"The attack was regrettable, but justifiable at the time by the available information. The information and decisions are now being re-evaluated."

How many more blatant atrocities will the US shrug off, while we continue to ship weapons to the perpetrators?

(And yes, I know the atrocities being committed against the Palestinian people are orders of magnitude greater than one strike against a humanitarian aid convoy, but it’s blindingly obvious the US gov’t doesn’t give half a shit about Palestinian lives.) https://mastodon.ar.al/@aral/112200175765614232

hko,

@mivox Speaking of shrugging, I was amazed this morning to see how eager the German press is to frame Iran's complaints about attacks on their embassy in Syria as unreasonable (and kind-of hostile).

Apparently this news medium didn't find it worth pointing out that attacking embassies is a bit irregular.

My , aged 27, at in - 1979. Photo was taken by humanitarian aid workers to help get sponsored to go to Europe, Canada, USA & Australia, under asylum.

My Dad passed away June 9, 2023.
He went through hell & back, several times. He beat almost all odds. Until infection in hospital in 2022. killed him last year.

I miss him very much😪❤️‍🩹💗❤

@msquebanh I'm shocked to learn that your dad's passing was caused by Covid.

I've been in angry disbelief for the last almost 4 years, about the almost uniformly destructive global handling of the pandemic (I remain in relatively serious social distancing mode, myself).

I am sorry for your loss, either way. But it feels extra unfair that Covid was a big factor :(

I'm looking at these 1979 photos of both of you. They are very evocative. Thank you for sharing.

Looking for a DNS provider that supports .de, .eu, .info TLDs, Dynamic DNS (incl TXT records for Let's Encrypt).

Preferably .de / .eu based.

Looks like hosting.de could do it (they've got a fairly extensive REST API), if their DynDNS supports wildcards.

Anyone else ...?

Christopher Lockyear, Secretary General of Doctors without Borders addressed the UN Security Council yesterday. Among his points:

"Children who survive this war will not only bear the visible wounds of traumatic injuries but the invisible ones too—those of repeated displacement, constant fear, and witnessing family members literally dismembered before their eyes. These psychological injuries have led children as young as five to tell us they would prefer to die."

The conservative death toll count for Gaza stands at over 28.000 (of Gaza's total population of ~2.3 mio) in the past 4 months.

A majority of the population of Gaza has fled their homes, is suffering shortages of food, water and medical services. Many have lived in temporary shelters for months. Of those, 1.5 mio are said to currently shelter in the Rafah area.

Imagining larger scale military operations in that area is disturbing, to say the least.

Aaaah yes. That annoying, yet predictable time of year where hegemonics who probably voted for Trump and hated everything MLK jr was about… start posting up vanilla quotes from him in order to deflect and deny their inherent, intense anti-Black hatred.

Please send help in advance. Thank you.

hko,

@ErickaSimone new rule: no one gets to post MLK quotes before having spent some time seriously engaging with his "Beyond Vietnam" speech (the historical recording is an amazing document, I can't recommend it enough).

hko,
@hko@mastodon.social avatar

@ErickaSimone I often wonder how the world would be different if that generation of black leaders hadn't all been murdered. If they had been able to co-shape our world for another half century or so, as they should have. It's a heartbreaking thought.

Thinking about state violence. And its very uneven public rejection.

Clearly, one of the tricks to living a happy life is not to be part of a marginalized (let alone maligned) group.

(Still, there might be some progress. Rejection of at least some state violence seems to grow more widespread. There's a long way to go, though.)
