Hi! 👋

I'm a They/Them.

I try really hard to remember accessibility tools (ALT Text).

Still learning how this all works. Not great at social media in general. Previously found with the same handle on the birdsite, and several other instances (weirder.earth and mastodon.social specifically).

Patience with me please?

izabelamisiak,

@jessica I removed the boost because it looks like the bot is down right now (or doesn't work anymore). But what a great concept to make this place even better for all!

3 good things:

  1. someone in the neighborhood is playing drum

  2. I saw some cool art here on Mastodon

  3. watching Julia Souls on Secret Sleepover Society

What are your 3 good things for today? 💚

izabelamisiak,

@ashleyspencer This is why I hardly listen to podcasts 😂 (although it's never 30 seconds for me)

  1. Made homemade cream of mushroom soup to prep for Cottage/Shepherd's Pie this week.

  2. Found a gazillion ways to use up the uncooked corn on the cob and the rest of the large portobello mushrooms, thanks to ChatGPT.

  3. Used ChatGPT to help schedule my days so I have structure. I included information about my personal challenges and responsibilities.

@3goodthings

izabelamisiak,

@melsaywhat Can you share the prompt you used in ChatGPT to schedule your days? Of course, without any personal information. I have not been able to use it for good planning. Have a great day!

izabelamisiak,

@melsaywhat No rush, I'll wait until you have a free and possibly quiet moment. Take care!

Feedback needed!

I'm gonna sneak in some neurodivergent advocacy w my team at work. I have not told them I am AuDHD.

My plan is to have my team create "Manual of Me" documents where each of us lists how we like to communicate, how we like to work, how we like to recieve feedback, etc. See link for examples.

My question is, what would you include to highlight your neurodivergent needs? Can be a Q the whole team has to answer.

izabelamisiak,

@dyani @actuallyautistic @actuallyadhd

  • bullet points, bold text, headers for the different topics
  • all questions/issues in a numbered list
  • written summary right after meetings, calls, etc. - I often do it myself (as I'm the one that needs it and no one else thinks about it), and they can add what I missed
  • tl;dr summary at the beginning of the long email - not sure how to communicate it to the team
  • deadlines and the person in charge of every task or project
  • not using phones - ever ;)

🆕 blog! “Can you follow your own getting started guide?”

I was trying to install a new open source project and was having a hell of a time. Nothing seemed to be working despite me following the tutorial to the letter. I was getting the most bizarre error messages and was on the verge of quitting to become a goat farmer, when I threw one […]

izabelamisiak,

@Edent I think "Spin up a fresh machine" is - in some cases - not enough, as they still can use the knowledge of how it works and use mental shortcuts. The knowledge that users sometimes/often don't have. How about "Spin up a fresh machine and ask your grandma to try to do it to see if she can follow your tutorial" 😉

izabelamisiak,

@Edent I'm reading "The Design of Everyday Things" by Donald Norman right now, he points out that people very often think it is their fault that they don't understand how something works (spoiler alert: it's not - it's bad design or communication). So that may be a reason why the tutorial had been wrong for a few years. I work with many "non-technical" people - they simply give up in these cases.

izabelamisiak,

@Edent It's fantastic! And very relevant. I love the design perspective for (probably) all things and topics, it's so helpful.

Speaking of , some Polish "internet celebrity art critic" type did a truly galaxy-brained "takedown" of that genre and… let's just say that I stopped reading after:

> The first obvious problem with Solarpunk is what are the characters supposed to do at night?

izabelamisiak,

@rysiek Everybody dies at dusk, obviously! What else could happen!?

That's facepalm for sure, but at the same time it is very funny that someone really wrote this (and was serious).

izabelamisiak,

@rysiek Maybe that's later in the text, we'll never know!

loops, to ADHD

I found myself looking through apps again, thinking maybe there's something to one of the plethora of apps designed "for" folks with ADHD? They look like they were made by the same people that told me I "just" need a diary.

I've used. So many apps. It doesn't matter the interface, or the cutesy idiom - eventually, I stop checking. I put all my tasks in, neatly organise and categorise them, then I go off to do something else - great intentions and all that 😅

Any friends out there who know of anything that helps to solve real ADHD challenges? Some of mine that come to mind specifically when trying to plan tasks / do things:

  • I forget to check the app / todo list
  • I forget I'm supposed to check
  • More tasks go in than get ticked off, which is demotivating
  • Reminders at inoppertune times (focused on something else, not feeling the thing) get summarily dismissed never to be seen again

@actuallyadhd

izabelamisiak, (edited )

@loops @actuallyadhd TL;DR: Here's my system, it will probably not work for any other human, but it's working for me. Also: I highly recommend using external brain for mundane tasks required to exist in NT society - I'm using Todoist for that. [1/8]

Could you please help me find some folklore?

The Brothers Grimm recorded the story "Der süße Brei" about a magic porridge pot.
When instructed, it produces food until told to stop. One day, the owner forgets the magic word and the village is engulfed in porridge.

If you are NOT German or English-speaking, does your culture have a similar cautionary tale?
If so, what foodstuff is it about?

Thanks gang, boosts appreciated.

izabelamisiak,

@Edent I don't think we have this story in Polish folklore (or maybe I just didn't hear it). As for the Brothers Grimm story (according to Wikipedia, I don't have the book), in Polish translation for some reason there is millet soup, not porridge.
