It was just a misunderstanding--"grail," for us, is a kind of breakfast roll--but suddenly we're neck-deep in knights with long lines at breakfast.

Sir Galahad is learning to bake breakfast rolls, which is charming, and Sir Gawain is providing scholarly insights into angels dancing on pinheads. However, several haven't returned from their side-quest to Liberate the Sun, and the rest are quite rowdy.

Might you perchance consider recalling your knights?

Like someone who fixed antique clocks, the first challenge of being a bot doc is the diagnosis. The second, much bigger one is finding parts for a bot that's outlived its manufacturer.

BTW, the big one's the doc. You can tell 'cause it can afford body panels.

Putting up the Ant Signal! (It's like the Bat Signal but, well, you know...) Can anyone identify the species?

It was at a nature preserve in San Diego county. The ants were brown, about 7mm long, and fast-moving.

@futurebird? You may be my only hope!

A macro image of the ants: large-ish head, narrow body, gaster is bigger than the head.

Use this handy quiz to tell if your ants are stuck up.

  • [ ] Door-woman at the nest entrance?
  • [ ] Prefer organic foods?
  • [ ] Prefer organic pheromones?
  • [ ] NIMBY attitude with respect to other species?
  • [ ] NIMBY attitude with respect to other colonies?
  • [ ] Will bite the hand that feeds them?

So, starting to see stories about how the RNC is saying they are not going to pay Trump's legal bills anymore.

Don't fall for it. This is just to fool their donors.

The RNC is going to continue to pay Trump's legal bills and a whole lot more.

Frozen embryos are “children,” according to Alabama’s Supreme Court

IVF often produces more embryos than are needed or used.

I wonder if this ruling means IVF clinics can seek child support payments to keep the freezers running, and what the criminal consequences of a power failure might be.

What am I missing here? None of this makes sense politically, strategically, or any other way.

Let's start with Russia wanting nukes in space but "It would not be to drop a weapon on Earth but to possibly use on satellites."

Why would you use a nuke against satellites? Space is big and satellites are generally delicate. You might incinerate some nearby ones, but that's about it. I could see nukes for an EMP attack, maybe, but satellites?

They say there are worlds in droplets.

If the distance from a proton to its electron is like the distance from a planet to its moon, then that between oxygen and hydrogen is like a sun to its planet, and that between molecules is the expanse between stars.

These symmetries run deeper than most know.

So I have perfected the machine. So simple in its construction, yet so profound in its symmetries, that one may step into a droplet... and vanish into the world.

Sometimes I come across strange jewelry ideas. Here is... a blank watch and a negative COVID test "lucky" pendent.

I wonder where these are popular. I'm starting a collection of jewelry that consists of objects that aren't functional, but look functional.

A watch, but it has not face, it's a bracelet.

jeffc,
@jeffc@mastodon.online avatar

@futurebird I'm trying to figure out if the watch is a reference to society's focus on time since the industrial revolution (when factory shifts and railroad schedules suddenly made exact time important) or maybe about the fact that everyone's clock is on their phone now.

Someone trying to tempt me back to Twitter with this screenshot, saying “come on, won’t it be fun to respond to this?” Their idea of fun may differ from mine.

Lots of people have made fun of my mental illness and openness about it, most often on Twitter. But I’m okay. So far I haven’t looked at one of them and said “wow they seem really happy and successful, I wish I had their life.”

The strandbeests noticed it first. They quit their daily pilgrimage and took to gathering mid-beach in listless herds.

It was as if, in their own way, the wind-powered sculptures realized that the warming water and the still, hot, damp air were somehow wrong, and they wanted no part of them.

I've been thinking about the complaints about engagement and discoverability. And algorithms, federation, and social networks.

Online social media's different from the social environment most of us grew up in, which could be the root of the engagement and discovery complaints. In fact, I'd guess Twitter originally started their algorithm to bridge that gap.
