Electric vehicles are making an increasingly bigger dent in oil use, both globally and in Australia. In 2022, they displaced the use of 1.5m barrels of oil a day. Daily global oil demand is around 97m barrels, so there's a long way to go.

But it is not electric cars doing most of the work. It is e-bikes and mopeds. These devices are ten times as common as electric cars globally (led by widespread adoption in ), and twice as popular as e-cars in Australia. In 2022, electric micromobility devices globally displaced more than four times as much oil as electric cars.

If you've never tried one, consider giving it a go. Most bike shops will give you a free test ride. Personally, getting an has been one of the best decisions I've made in the last few years and has been one important way of maintaining our household record of never having owned a car.

A tip for or any . See if your city has a pavement condition . I like to check that whenever I’m exploring new routes. Combined with recent imagery it helps you find the good stuff. Buttery smooth vs. busted up makes a big difference.

Anyone ever replace a front tire on one of those little scooter things? This one looks like it has some sort of side wall damage or dry rot (my guess is the inner tube is also shot). How difficult was it? Was it worth the cost?

Also relatedly: anyone know what the chargers typically go for?

Sorry I don't have the brand name or model at home, I'll have to check at work on Monday.

When I got to San Francisco in 2010, I really wanted to do it all

Build a startup, create change through technology.

But the more I learned of the culture, the less I wanted to succeed according to its rubric. The turning point for me was Airbnb

Around 2011, Airbnb was REALLY taking off. All the benefits of a software business, none of the drawbacks of a real estate business. The best of all worlds.

Except…

@clive @danilo @glyph though, to be fair, we were out one day and met a young couple riding e-scooters on the San Francisco sidewalk. All of us waiting at a loooong light. Nice people. Why were they on the sidewalk? Well, they tried the street ( the label says not to ride on the sidewalk (giggle)). And the drivers terrified them. So, onto the sidewalk. And guess what? They hated the e-scooter experience, would never do it again. (Speaking as one who bicycle commuted through a Chicago winter, I stopped bicycling because of safety concerns/ bad drivers.)

Think of how much better it would be, if instead of thinking of the sidewalk as a hot new property to squat on, the brilliant tech mind had actively engaged with the city to develop good protected lanes for bikes & scooters? They'd be heroes. And their political clout would have accelerated development of a safe, fast travel network.

The battle against those e-scooters that take out people's ankles is a good one, but the real battle is the battle against those SUVs that take out people' lives.

Car infrastructure is incredibly expensive. It's unfortunate that we spend so much money to make our public spaces less pleasant and our planet less livable. I wish this were a bigger talking point, but there's always more money for pavement.

scottsthoughts,
@scottsthoughts@better.boston avatar

If you want a cheap to build, cheap to maintain infrastructure solution - /micromobility lanes! Bikes and other devices don't cause anywhere near the road damage that cars and trucks do, so they are much less expensive to maintain. Not to mention they are smaller and more fault tolerant than roads so they can be built for a fraction of the cost. Of course, that would require politicians to see micromobility as a valid form of transport first.

Practical, low cost solutions always the best in the long run. North America needs to leave the supersized automobile behind.

What's interesting about Florida is that they are generally suspicious of electric cars, and yet they've got electric micromobility TOTALLY sorted. There are golf carts everywhere. There are apparently even new developments where they have double-width sidewalks with a separate track for golf carts.

Cars are a scam.
A horse drawn carriage is fast enough and can haul enough.
No I'm not suggesting a return to horse drawn carriages. A 750 watt electric motor is equal to one horsepower. They can be put on small 2, 3, or 4 wheeled vehicles made from bicycle parts or in a factory. You don't need a 3 ton motorized living room set with 500 horsepower to take your lazy ass to work or the store.
