Activists rally to save Internet Archive as a lawsuit from publishers threaten to shut it down https://decrypt.co/31906/activists-rally-save-internet-archive-lawsuit-threatens

If people are smart, it's time to archive the Archive right now. In other words, fork it and turn it unto a decentralized platform. I hope someone out there is working on that.

Plus you have to think libraries need some decentralization as well as this lawsuit could kill libraries as we know them.

I would not be surprised if Songtradr is going to push the button on it. https://www.songtradr.com/blog/posts/songtradr-bandcamp-acquisition/

I'll tell you all, a whole LOT of people on the (especially those on bigger instances) that I have respect for are showing their true colors over these last couple of days and it's really a shame.

It's like they don't even acknowledge Meta/FB's history of doing business plus deep down, they give you know what about the these days.

A for the instance:

I'm sure the have sent you a email about the upcoming migration to 4.2.x next week so I'll share the contents here in case you haven't:

Feel free to boost for awareness.

cc @SDF

* Full duplication of the existing database and fileserver RAID will be made to new hardware preserving mastodon.sdf.org as it will be on Nov 23rd, 2023 at 00:00:00 UTC. * The database reconcile and migration to v4.2.x will then be performed on the new harware, not the old hardware. It should also be noted that the new hardware has several performance benefits such as a faster RAID, double the number of cores and memory. It should out perform the lab environment. * In the unlikely event the migration cannot proceed we will simply bring the v4.1.x site back online as it will be preserved as of Nov 23rd, 2023 00:00:00 and continue operating as is. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we make our way to the exciting new features in Mastodon v4.2.x - This work will also allow for easier migrations to future releases as well as improved day to day maintenance and clean up of the database going forward. Your patience and continue use of mastodon.sdf.org is really all we ask. While not at all required, support for our work can be made through donations at https://sdf.org/support Thank you for being part of our effort to build the fediverse.

The UK government has (at least for now) decided to back off a piece of the legislation that would have outright banned end-to-end encryption and would have been a major disaster in all means. https://archive.ph/HDnUa

It's surely not over though as this piece here rightfully explains why. https://techcrunch.com/2023/09/06/osb-encryption-scanning-feasibility/

As a user, I'm very disappointed by this revelation from @nikclayton on the way they do business if you will. https://nikclayton.writeas.com/stepping-back-from-the-tusky-project

It's sadly time to set it aside until they can get their shit together if not at all.

In the meantime, I always like how (@megalodon) does things and you should give that a try. Also you can use or the browser version of Mastodon as well.

It's very likely (to me) that Meta/FB is going to sneak in and start scraping up everything for ads and AI training. In other words, they're going to Embrace, Extend, and Extinguish the Fediverse.

I'm hope that I'm wrong because I love to be wrong in this case.

Pharmacies share medical information with law enforcement anytime they want. All without a warrant. https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/12/12/pharmacy-records-police-privacy-abortion/
https://archive.ph/7jE9d

This is sadly tolerated because the US doesn't have a single and law in the books (at least in the federal level). Plus is toothless in these cases since companies and law enforcement find loopholes to get around HIPPA.

This is yet another reason why you should buy a 2012 or older since the automotive, insurance, and data broker industries don't give a total shit about your and sadly the US aren't going to do jack about this until we can elect more people in office that does care and pass a strong privacy law in the process.

A must-read piece form @kashhill describes this continued urgency.
