Kind of lonely today, can you show me a picture of your fur babies and tell me their story? :QueerCat:

@aronow This is Charlie! He lived most of his 16 years up in Ripon, North Yorkshire, with a friend of our family, Audrey, and his sister, Lola. Audrey passed away in 2022, and our family had promised to look after both Charlie & Lola. Sadly, Lola had to be put down before she reached us, but Charlie came through & has been a friendly and very vocal ray of sunshine in our lives ever since! I'm gently memorialising all 3 in the docs I write for my day job :-) https://alpha.cuelang.org/docs/howto/transform-yaml-with-cue/

Today marks the end of another year for JCM Systems - my 1-man-band //etc company with the best website that money didn't buy: https://www.jcm-systems.co.uk/

After over a decade of independent, getting-shit-done work, I'm /finally/ in a place where I'm comfortable with what I enjoy; why I'm doing this; and with saying no to the "wrong" kind of gigs.

I'm not actively looking for client work right now, but if you want to Make Opsy Things Better for folks, give me a kick 😀

Just a brief reminder that every VM/container/etc you give a public address to now costs you $3.65/month more than in 2023. AWS charges per IP-address per-hour.

Does anyone know (or could point to) the theoretical or practical limit on the number of deployed functions that an account can contain? I can't see the question answered anywhere.

Not concurrent executions; not provisioned capacity; not create-function-requests-per-second; not function versions ... but the number of uniquely named functions that can be deployed, possibly sitting unused, ready to be invoked, in an AWS account ... 🤔

A question for any users who submit builds to the builds.sr.ht service via its git.sr.ht integration (https://man.sr.ht/builds.sr.ht/#gitsrht): are there any tricks to having a persistent main branch .build.yml file in place, whilst trying to minimise the load on the build service?

I know about git push -o skip-ci, but I'm definitely not going to remember to do that on every push to (or config of) each non-build-worthy branch.

Any ideas/tricks/etc?

If you were a (UK) business with more than 85,000 GBP to stick into savings accounts, how would you handle it?
Related but separate: I vaguely recall a service which keeps an eye on different banks' accounts' rates, and does periodic sweeps to make sure that no single account is outside the #FSCS coverage limit (of 85k) ... but I can't remember its name 🙄 #UkBusiness #Banking #FinancialServicesCompensationScheme #Interest #BusinessBanking #UK #AskFedi #Business #Savings

Here's a question: what -based "stuff" do you do with spreadsheets, outside the realm of grid-based tasks (eg a multiplication table) or texty lists (eg a todo list) or things producing graphs?

I'm interested in anything with a series of calculations that's /not/ a big grid!

Some of my ideas include calculating:

  • salary/tax/take-home pay
  • budgets
  • expenses

... but I'm being very money-centric! What else can you suggest? !

The few times I’ve used the I’ve rapidly become bogged down in off-putting low level detail. I just want to write words, select a theme, run a command, and push the resulting nice-looking site!
What can I check out that would give me a closer-to-hosted-Wordpress level of “choose theme; type words; have website” initial effort (even if that absolutely implies a low degree of customisation/flexibility)?

Would anyone care to recommend a CO2 monitor I can prop up next to my desk to remind me when to ventilate?

Bonus marks if it's both powered and portable, so I can occasionally take it to meetings and opt out when things get too muggy. I don't care about recording numbers over time. UK purchase.

Q: it is I want to monitor, both for air quality and as a proxy for the fact that , right??

Today I walked a round trip of 13km: up Shotover hill, down into Wheatley for a coffee, up past Wheatley windmill and down into Horspath. I peeked though the windows of the primary school that I last attended a third of a dang century ago, and went back up and over Shotover country park. It was a fantastic hike, made even better by the wood absolutely bursting with bluebells!

This little sod spent 2 hours away outside this evening, never once coming back to the shake of a Dreamies tin. Worried me something dreadful. He's lucky he's adorable, or we'd be having words.

Hello! 👋

What is the best way to clean up local git branches? 😵 I have a bad habit of not removing them after they are merged and now have tons of branches floating around I will never use again.

Is there some git wizardry I can use?

jonathanmatthews,
@jonathanmatthews@fosstodon.org avatar

@parcifal if they're deleted on the remote (eg automatically after merging) then a simple "git fetch -p" should remove them locally :-)

Current status: cup of tea in the garden. Reading a 2007 book I bought in 2012, about some software first released in 1995 handling a 1981 protocol that I'm going to use as the cornerstone of my teeny tiny SaaS in 2024.

May we all have such a long-term effect on the world!
