Wait, everybody online freaked out about something that didn't actually come to fruition? Can that be?

One thing that's great about hosting your own PDS vs hosting your own Mastodon instance is that a single-user Mastodon instance inherently sees just a sliver of the fediverse, for better or worse.

When hosting your own Bluesky PDS, there are no similar trade-offs within the ATProto network. The user experience is identical to that of somebody on the flagship server.

@bitprophet I don't know precisely, but I believe this relies on "indexing servers" as intermediaries to relay posts around. This makes it less distributed than Mastodon and more reliant on large, centralized, powerful entities, though "in theory anybody could run an indexer":

@bitprophet Also, on ATProto, you don't really have an "instance." Your PDS is just kind of a repository of info about you -- your metadata, followers, lists, posts, etc. There's no frontend, for instance, but you use your URL to log into Bluesky using their web app or mobile app.

@jsit@social.coop avatar

@bitprophet Yeah I've been wondering about that myself since jumping on there. Seems like all kinds of similar flexibility is possible. There is one third-party app that I know of, deck.blue, which is a TweetDeck-like experience for Bluesky.

Trump went off the teleprompter in an eruption of particularly demented fear and loathing. And he did it at the major "conservative" -- that is, right-wing extremist -- conference that welcomed Nazis and featured a social-media nutcase who said his ilk would finish the job they were doing on Jan. 6.

You would not know about all of this if your source of political news is the Washington Post, or the New York Times.

My heart is sinking as I open Bluesky and see all these people whose accounts I miss after having quit Twitter.

The normies aren’t coming, folks.

A warning to others: the @ivory TestFlight beta deleted my 150+ drafts :\

@ivory I just installed over it

lol am I like over-designing this? 😂

I need a way to test this but I don't have a Mastodon server for testing. Don't really want to send random test reports to other instance admins 😬

Not on dev site yet, still on my local dev.

@cheeaun I imagine mute/block should look like radio buttons, not checkboxes?

jsit,
@jsit@social.coop avatar

@cheeaun Ah of course. Then I think a “neither” radio button would do, or a checkbox that enabled the radio buttons.

jsit,
@jsit@social.coop avatar

@lime @cheeaun Yeah, I think it would be ok not to have this as a sentence.

This has honestly been this first time where I felt Mastodon might be inferior to Twitter. I’m sure it’ll shake out eventually but…. Ugh.

People will believe and boost any screenshot of a headline that fits their worldview, even with no attribution or link.

Why are SCREENSHOTS OF HEADLINES a thing? We are on the World Wide goddamn Web

I think I must be the only person who isn't receiving Mastodon spam. Anybody else at dealing with this? Or has the mod team just been extremely on top of things?

Google Chrome’s new "Privacy Sandbox” allows sites to opt-out of being used to help build an interest profile for visitors with the addition of a simple header in the response:

Permissions-Policy: browsing-topics=()

@roytanck has created a tiny plugin that will add this header automatically:

just learned evangelical christians are supporting Israel in their genocide because Israel is integral to the rapture.

To be clear, the current govt. and its policies didn't exist when the bible was written. The plot of land currently called "Israel" may be part of your holy doomsday ( or whatever ) but the current government definitely is not unless of course the killing of everyone in the neighboring country is some sort of blood sacrifice to kick it off...

Apparently Huntr can now can make AI generated resumes (🤦‍♀️ please no) and AI generated Cover Letters...

Cover letters are 🐄💩. So are all the "why do you want to work for us" required application fields. Having an AI generate the "Golly, it's always been my dream to work at [insert co name i hadn't heard of 5 minutes ago] because [regurgitation of your 🐄💩 "healthy work life" claims instead of reality that I just want to pay for housing, eat food, & have medical ins]" is actually pretty tempting.

@masukomi I love that idea that rather than dropping this facade, we just give the job to LLMs and keep going through the motions.

It really irks me when “ games” have “pixels” that (a) don’t adhere to a pixel grid, or worse, (b) are oblique to a pixel grid.
