Bluesky is going to skyrocket to mainstream popularity and actually replace Twitter, and Mastodon cannot, because Bluesky is being designed to be simple, fun, and — most importantly — easy to understand.

@cdlhamma @thoralf No. They're overlooking it because they don't care.

People viewing these replies: what are your favorite instances where people are goofing around and blowing off steam?

When it comes to my timeline I think of Laserdisc Party @derek first.

Just as I suspected, this thing wasn’t really a thing until the last ten years or so. What caused it to become well-known?

Who the fuck is this asshole? Anyone who wants to claim Mastodon is full of zen needs to look at pieces of shit like this guy who crawled into my mentions to make assumptions b/c I happen to like pop culture. I like art a lot too and if you want to get art snob about it, let’s go .

@film_girl Mastodon zealots are such weird scolds. They think it’s a feature not a bug that people don’t talk about pop culture on Mastodon, and they feel superior for it.

Sigh. LLMs don't hallucinate. They assemble words. They know nothing, understand nothing. They are being misused by tech platforms and misrepresented by media.

@jeffjarvis Calling them “AI” in the first place is a big part of the problem.

Oh cool, DuckDuckGo now accepts pay-for-placement and doesn't review ads manually and so, now scam websites are in first position.

Cool cool cool.

Hard times are here for news sites and social media, with some publications shutting down and many outlets laying off staff.

@NPR (which recently had its own downsizing) asks: Is this the end of Web 2.0?

https://www.npr.org/2023/04/28/1172599212/web-buzzfeed-vice-gawker-facebook-twitter-media-news

jsit,

@NewsDesk Just to be clear, that is not an official NPR Mastodon account.

jsit, to programming

@wikipedia Wikipedia should underline its in-article links. Often these are long noun phrases with two or more links in them, and you can’t know which words are links without hovering.

I know removing underlines has been basically de facto design on the web for the last 20 years, but it is bad for usability.

If you hear someone say, “My car needs warshed,” you know you’re in the Midland dialect territory.

jsit,
@jsit@social.coop avatar

@grammargirl Recently I heard what I’m calling a “positive ‘or anything’”, as in: “As kids we would play monopoly, scrabble, or anything.” In a similar sense to “and stuff”. Is there somewhere I can read about this?

(Reminds me of “positive ‘anymore’”, which I think is midland, which is why I ask.)

jsit,
@jsit@social.coop avatar

@grammargirl I heard it on a podcast once and have heard it a small handful of times since then, I’ll try to find it

People: Mastodon will fail! This is unacceptable! Bad UX! They don't want us there! 😠

I'm staying away from BlueSky unless it becomes inevitable, and I hope that never happens.

The idea of hooking up with another Jack Dorsey sell-out at this point seems the most ridiculous idea ever.

He made his billions, he sold out to Musk, and now he wants another shot. No. Not unless we have no choice.

@scottjenson @mjf_pro @GregCirillo @tchambers I am so tired of this elitist Mastodon gatekeeping. “Don’t make it too easy to use so that the dummies don’t show up” is such a terrible attitude.

Part of the reason MKBHD’s videos are so great is that he isn’t doing that loud, overbearingly “charismatic” “SUP GUYS” thing that all other tech vloggers seem to do. They just feel nice to watch.

@masukomi Yeah, they’re clearly very polished but don’t feel overly scripted.

I keep seeing instances of people interacting with ChatGPT as though it’s a generalized AI.

When you ask it a question, imagine that what you’re really asking it is:

“Do your best to generate text that sounds as much as possible like a plausible and convincing answer to this question.”
