Wow. A microbiology lab at Texas A&M accepted purchased raw milk samples from NPR for H5N1 testing, then contacted the milk producers to seek permission. When the producers said, "don't test our milk," the lab not only declined to carry out the tests but also refused to send the samples on to another lab.

Hi -- some positivity for you. For years I've been offering trainings around graduation time about practicing evidence-based public health without an academic library.

In past years, the people who showed up were mostly university staff who also teach at other local universities, wanting info about getting around paywalls for their students at less-resourced institutions. Very few new grads!

BUT...

Just got a peer review request from a journal I didn't know, and because the topic was right up my alley I went and looked up the journal -- diamond OA, CC-BY, author retains copyright -- all things I want to support. None of which they mentioned in the request.
Don't hide your light under a bushel, handling editors!

Great book, strong recommendation, get it for your library's collection and read it as soon as it's on the shelf

I know @pluralistic has talked about right to repair in the context of wheelchairs - I bet you'd be interested in this too

https://www.statnews.com/2024/05/01/wheelchair-repair-delay-numotion-national-seating-mobility/

The headline is "After private equity firms gobbled up wheelchair makers, users pay the price in long repair times"

Is there anywhere that does dim sum outdoors? Boston, Quincy, wherever?

This made me feel a lot better:
As of Friday, CDC recommends that people working with animals potentially infected with bird flu use PPE including respirators, implicitly acknowledging airborne/aerosol/“through the air airborne transmission/inhalation.”

About the IAQ aerostability of SARS-CoV-2 paper that has been all over COVID-cautious Mastodon - it's fascinating (and open access).

Does this make anyone more likely to subscribe to the podcast?

Just got a phishing email at work masquerading as a notification about an exposure to an infectious disease.... Joke's on them, we don't have a contact tracing team to send out notifications 🤦‍♀️

Dear enthusiasts, what would you recommend for these circumstances?

  • ride on pavement but also a dirt road in poor repair
  • leave outdoors NEAR THE OCEAN for days at a time
  • bring a small dog (15 lb) in some kind of carrier or crate - but, I don't need to bring the dog when I'm training for the
  • in winter I'll store the battery in the basement of an unheated house
  • I'm not very handy but I'll have to try and do maintenance myself bc it's quite rural

As much as I hated the NPR "let's guilt my husband into indoor dining" article, there's a silver lining to every cloud: it has prompted a lot of responses that I really enjoyed reading.

Hi , would you be able to use some COVID tests quite soon?
I have four rapid COVID tests whose extended expiration date is March 25 and one more expiring April 4.
I'd really like for the tests to get used!

If you can use them before those dates - for example, before visiting at-risk people (or for your own visitors), or before an indoor shared-air event, or whatever - you can have them, free. DM me and we can figure out a time and place to meet up.

Personally I'm really curious about where the "24 hours fever free" idea comes from. Does that actually correlate with lower infectiousness?

Unfortunately temp was apparently not recorded through the disease course in this interesting preprint, just an overall self-rated symptom severity

Real question: why don't we have widely accessible apps/services to scan our faces and recommend which models of elastomeric or disposable respirators will fit comfortably and tightly to our faces?
Clearly the tech exists - but we are using it for VR goggle fitting instead of PPE

** Please note that some fully open access journals require the submitting author to tick a box agreeing to the standard publishing agreement as part of the submission process. In such instances, authors should tick this box to be able to proceed and the values will then be manually overridden by our Author Service team.

Accept the terms that you legally can't accept, and then we promise we'll override the system to apply the right terms later. Trust me :)
