I used to, they were engineering-related and we kind of all did like 15 years ago. Then he went off the deep end and I threw that shit away.

Asking for recommendations:

I'm looking for a new instance. has become essentially unusable since Byron's departure and the recent server migration. A mix of timeouts, server failures, and just missing posts. I've been supporting it via Patreon so am more than willing to support a new server.

What i'd like is stability and reasonable performance. An interesting local feed is a bonus. Not looking for an instance based on a single interest group or one that's highly ideological.

Suggestions?

(Now we'll see if this actually posts and if I'm actually able to see replies.)

If you wear glasses, and occasionally get those sore areas on either side of your nose, I have a suggestion which works for me: liquid bandage.

Caution: eye irritant. (It's a lot like clear nail polish.) Brush a little bit on each side of your nose where your glasses are rubbing, and let it dry. (I close my eyes, to prevent irritation from the fumes of liquid bandage itself.) Once it dries, it provides a comfortable barrier.

CW: assault

STONE FRUIT: GN about a Queer couple who learn about the healing powers of communication, and the expansion of what it means to be family, led by their precocious niece.

A FADE OF LIGHT: GN: a tender portrayal of how Alzheimer's steals from all of us.

(on Friday, I read) WHETHER VIOLENT OR NATURAL: a Piranneesi-like deep dive into the powers of the mind. This one has heavily descriptive prose, and a much more sinister vibe. For fans of character studies and literary fiction.

@sarahmatthews @bookstodon this is fun! I got In Ascension, by Martin MacInnes. It does sound intriguing.

As an aside, I have read both Old God's Time and If I Survive You, and thought both were emotionally affecting with great writing.

I've also heard great feedback on The Bee Sting, but have not yet read it.

Do any of you have plans to read the whole longlist, or maybe the shortlist when it's narrowed down?

    Sooooo I’m not better at all since ER on Monday. In fact I’m worse and in terrible pain. Been awake since 2 pm yesterday from it and likely going back to ER in about 3 hours when our daytime caregiver for my son arrives. Always got to have coverage here before anyone is allowed an emergency. The life of @caregivers, eh? I’m thinking all the medical folks are missing something, my best guess is gallbladder. Can you post some funny stuff to distract me? I’d really appreciate it.

    @cobalt @caregivers If you think it's your gallbladder (right sided pain which can even go up to the shoulder, inability to tolerate certain foods), and ultrasound shows nothing (no gallstones present), ask for a HIDA scan, which is a functional test of how well the gallbladder is working.

    I'll go first: finally heard from my friends in Maui. They are both safe, though Mark's office burned down. I'm grateful that they are alive, unharmed, and that their condo is safe from the fires so far.
