I am looking into hosting a instance. Already got a nice domain for it and have the general idea how to do it. Anything I should know before starting?

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@blakeashleyjr Like all my other stuff in my homelab. Hardware wise it shouldn't be a problem, I am rather wondering about the software side. For example a while ago I read Pixelfed works better with MariaDB and not PostgreSQL?

@thomas
So when are you gonna roll the metalhead.club Mastodon credentials over to create XMPP accounts for the entire server?
😜😜

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@thomas @GothFvck there is also a direct auth script for Ejabberd to link directly to the Mastodon user-database: https://joinjabber.org/tutorials/integration/mastodon/

Mal so aus #Sicherheit saspekten gefragt: Was ist sicherer: #Matrix oder #XMPP ? Oder kann man das so nicht sagen?
Bitte gern #rt

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@lifeinstereo lässt sich so pauschal nicht sagen, aber bezüglich Privatsphäre ist XMPP definitiv besser. E2EE ist bei Matrix auch ziemlich aufgeweicht.

Nice to see Franzo live-streaming games again, and thanks to @cobito for hosting a instance. The only thing that is missing is direct access for linking the live chat via see: https://gitlab.com/refrac/obs-matterbridge-overlay/-/blob/master/documentation/peertube.md#matterbridge

Setting up an alternative event calendar in your town might be one of the single easiest things you can do to boost local counterculture and grassroot organization. :anarchism:

Here the example of Barcelona:
https://bcn.convoca.la/

  • easy to use
  • privacy-friendly
  • everybody can post an event (approval by mods), registered collectives can publish directly

Plus: the underlying software (@gancio developed by @lesion :anarchoheart3: ) is FOSS and works with ActivityPub!

@earthworm @gancio @lesion Another example would be: https://codeberg.org/Klasse-Methode/eintopf

Sounds like an interesting new software for organising groups and events. They are also looking into making it federated via

Our Lemmy server on https://slrpnk.net is having hardware issues that will take some time to fix. Please be patient with us.

The amount of people working on alternative clients for right now is really amazing.

I just set up this nice one for our instance: https://github.com/rystaf/mlmym

You can try it at https://old.slrpnk.net

Started working on account integration between Lemmy and Ejabberd: https://f-hub.org/Solarpunk/ejabberd-auth-lemmy

Needs some proper testing, but it looks not bad so far.

Just updated our https://slrpnk.net instance to the new 0.18.1 version. Massive improvement over earlier versions due to the newly grown community coming together :ablobcatheart:

This puts it nicely into words what I have been thinking is happening over at the Reddit HQ: https://mitchw.blog/2023/06/14/reddit-is-speedrunning.html

Other sites with a large centrally stored body of user contributed text suitable for AI training might be next.

Apparently lemmy has a problematic dev community and kbin is the new hotness for replacing Reddit. I’ll likely move Infosec.pub to it this weekend. I’ll attempt to port accounts over, but no idea how involved that’ll be

kris, (edited )
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@brunomiguel @jerry The "dev community" is basically two guys, one of whom is indeed somewhat problematic. I think it is a bit too early to throw out the baby with the bath-water as they say and Lemmy would probably benefit from more contributors so that the problematic dev is less important. That said: a kbin importer would be indeed a good backup plan :blobcatfearful:

Some thoughts on voting UI

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@cody My point was mainly that bundling these two technically and conceptually different interactions into what appears to be the same thing just with a positive or negative sign is not the best UI design wise.

So what are we trying to do here on outmo.de ?
Well, for once it is just setting up an instance that we would like to use ourselves, thus the goal isn't to grow this server to a big size.
Another primary goal is to develop and show-case an instance that is tightly integrated with chat as we think private chat is a natural complement to a micro-blogging website.
To this extend, we are going to look into integrating either or into a akkoma-fe soft-fork for easy use. Guest access via a -web client is also being considered.
We would also like to offer a XMPP gateway to people contributing to the operation of this website and might also provide some other complementary cloud services to donators.
So lets join forces to outmode the old centralized web :nkoHype:
