Happy 40th Anniversary of the day the Breakfast Club had their detention.

I’m struggling to deal with this version of the internet, where hosts are removing people for voluntarily nudity, but not removing nazis.

And a big part of that is because banks & credit card processing companies won’t allow nudity and sex stuff but are totally ok with hate speech.

From a risk perspective this is asinine - very few people have ever died as a result of naked tits, while we’re watching people be murdered in hate attacks daily.

Everything is fucked and backwards.

Just a reminder that leaving content in closed platforms is a good way to lose it. Take some time this week to move your key information out of Slack, Discord, Reddit, Google Docs, etc. and into text files or html pages on the open web for folks to find.

Always Be Opening.

Everyone is talking about fast fashion, but no one is talking about the plague of fast furniture. It’s impossible to find true durable pieces that can last for generations anymore, even the so-called “Amish made” pieces are typically cheap stuff being bulk produced in one of a dozen massive factories.

I can’t even find a solid wood panel bed at any of the vintage or resale shops anymore. Particleboard is the only choice we’re being given. It’s tragic.

This is now a covers thread. I'm going to mainly be focusing on my all-time favorite bluegrass band, Iron Horse, who are best known for the Pickin' On series. Many of their covers are dramatic improvements on the source material! Take for instance this Modest Mouse cover:

GSA is currently doing a study to investigate racial bias in facial recognition technology, particularly for automated identity proofing. PLEASE share this as widely as possible so that they can get a wide range of feedback, not just from white folks. Thanks!

Kinda already sick of seeing the buzzword FinOps, which just means to manage your cloud bill through standard accounting practices 😒

Y'all should read this compelling piece from Marianne Bellotti - organizations should be investing in training their own staff, not outside consultants:

https://bellmar.medium.com/the-first-thing-we-do-lets-kill-all-the-consultants-bc64bcebf1b5

I've been pushing this concept in for years - we need to upskill and not just rely on external folks to fix our problems.

Friends - it's HACKERS DAY!!!!!

My favorite day of the year! A reminder of all of the various forms of hacking - whether it's hacking code or hacking bureaucracy. Today is a day to actively find things you can make better, by using your 1337 skillz.

We'll also be visiting the Hackers movie soundtrack today for in honor of the 28th anniversary of it's release.

Find something to hack today!

The Lord Nikon, Zero Cool (Crash Override), Phantom Phreak (the king of Nynex), and Cereal Killer watching television in the movie Hackers. They shout in unison, "Hack the Planet!"

I have technical issues with the Fediverse-as-designed, ActivityPub being a noisy, push-based system that I despise.

But the bigger issue is that Mastodon and its clones continue to fuel the instant-gratification, attention-stealing, all-consuming internet of shit.

A better internet must go back to being slow and thoughtful, less laden with tongue-in-cheek irony and sarcasm and hot-takes.

We must relinquish our obsession on consuming each other's time, so instead we can share time together.

Cristin Milioti Is one hell of a dramatic actress, but damn I kinda wish something good could happen for one of her characters in a movie/show once in a while.

It's very sad to me that the American Dream (tm) has gone from "work hard and you will succeed" to "find another sucker to scam and you'll get rich." Particularly since most of the folks who think they're scamming are actually the suckers.

Well Waldo started it, so let's keep it going! For this week's #FridayPlaylist, it's those cold, raining, autumn day songs.

I will admit that I was late to discovering Warpaint, and even later to learning that Shannyn Sossamon was one of the founding members. Heads Up is one of my most frequent go-to albums on days like this.

Hi there! You, yes you, should be blogging more. You don't have to do daily, but you should definitely be writing about things you know and things you like! Pretend it's the 00s again!

Also, did you know it's super easy to start a web ring with your friends? I built a free library so you can do it, and you can even host it for free on GitHub! https://billhunt.dev/blog/2022/12/30/bringing-webrings-back/

Friends, just a reminder of my very active jobs board, where a bunch of new remote positions got posted today:

and Rebecca Heywood makes regular job posts too:

If you need any further proof that the internet has truly become bloated garbage, look to weather.com, where the last thing to load on the page, almost a minute after first byte, is the current weather. 😒

If you are an employed technology worker of any type, are not a manager, and you do not have a union, you need to start a union IMMEDIATELY.

These profit-driven layoffs will only continue. Collective bargaining is the greatest power we have as workers!

There is no minimum size for a union. You only need 50% of the other workers to agree. It’s not super easy but it’s not hard, and there are free resources.

Today is my birthday. In lieu of well-wishes or generic messages, today would be a nice day to donate to your local food bank!

And if you do, you can still get a free sticker from me, over on my website! Also, since it is my birthday, for the day I've enabled one of the secret easter egg themes hidden on my site, in the style of one of my favorite bands, KMFDM.
