Huh wow, TIL never had a contributor license agreement.

Does that make this the first high-profile case of a previously-FOSS project relicensing while having a bunch of contributions made by people who didn't consent to the license change? ..How is that going to go down

marcus_grant,
@marcus_grant@fosstodon.org avatar

@nemobis @mort and it seems like open tofu, the project that forked it is having little trouble getting support. That still leaves the issue of massive firms freeriding on open source without contributing. It does seem the community needs better licenses, perhaps even contractual agreements

The knowledge that people are using LinkedIn for dating is terrifying; but more terrifying than that is the realization that at this rate people will start uploading their CVs on Tinder.

marcus_grant,
@marcus_grant@fosstodon.org avatar

@gabrielesvelto I see it as a filter. The kinds of people that would ever so much as contemplate this approach it’s probably a good way to match people. And for everyone else, their preferred methods won’t have as many people that think this is a good idea in it, probably leading to less bad matches in their respective method

NASA will perform a "rollout" ceremony of X-59, the "quiet" supersonic aircraft, tomorrow Friday, Jan. 12 at 4 p.m. ET.

A rollout is the first public display of a fully assembled aircraft. First flight will take place months later.

The X-59 is being developed by the "Skunk Works" at Lockheed Martin. It is expected to cruise at Mach 1.42 at an altitude of 16,800 m and create a very low level sonic boom, unlike that of past supersonic aircraft.

    If all goes well with my install tomorrow I might be tempted to give a try instead of my usual trusty ?
    Anyone want to chime in with reasons for and against zsh ?

    marcus_grant, (edited )
    @marcus_grant@fosstodon.org avatar

    @JustineSmithies I’ve always just used the default spaceship config on both zsh and bash. Usually root is bash and my user is zsh and they both seem to work just fine with the default config. As for zsh vs bash I’ve always told myself I’d make bash have all the bells and whistles in zsh with various other programs but have never gotten around to it so I’m still sticking with zsh and keep bash in root as a precaution of overzealous configs I might make in zsh. I’m pretty happy with zsh so far

    Sam Bankman Fried is really fcking up in court in the FTX trail :blobcatgiggle:

    Trying to shift the blame to his former partners and acting like he doesn't know anything anymore from his time at FTX

    Luckily most of the jurdy doesn't buy it as far as i know

    I heard something about ~150 years jailtime thats hanging above his head :catblush:

    Well, that's what you get when you basically steal billions of customers funds 🤷

    @stux I just hope this trial discredits all things “longtermism” from public perception. Effective altruism is just another euphemism for the same ideas. That is techno feudalism but “I swear guys it’s for the long term good of humanity”

    Wander, (edited ) to selfhosted
    @Wander@packmates.org avatar

    The future of selfhosted services is going to be... Android?

    Wait, what?

    Think about it. At some point everyone has had an old phone lying around. They are designed to be constantly connected, constantly on... and even have a battery and potentially still a SIM card to survive power outages.

    We just need to make it easy to create APK packaged servers that can avoid battery-optimization kills and automatically configure an outbound tunnel like ngrok, zerotrust, etc...

    The goal: hosting services like , , !? should be as easy as installing an APK and leaving an old phone connected to a spare charger / outlet.

    It would be tempting to have an optimized ROM, but if self-hosting is meant to become more commonplace, installing an APK should be all that's needed. can do SSH, VPN and other tunnels without the need for root, so there should be no problem in using tunnels to publicly expose a phone/server in a secure manner.

    In regards to the suitability of home-grade broadband, I believe that it should not be a huge problem at least in Europe where home connections are most often unmetered: "At the end of June 2021, 70.2% of EU homes were passed by either FTTP or cable DOCSIS
    3.1 networks, i.e. those technologies currently capable of supporting gigabit speeds."

    Source: https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/library/broadband-coverage-europe-2021

    PS. syncthing actually already has an APK and is easy to use. Although I had to sort out some battery optimization stuff, it's a good example of what should become much more commonplace.

    cc: @selfhosted

    marcus_grant,
    @marcus_grant@fosstodon.org avatar

    @herzenschein @Wander @selfhosted with a cluster, even in WiFi you could mitigate some of those problems, but for home use clusters is potentially asking too much

    The mainstream "tech" YouTubers and their consequences have been a disaster for my comment section.

    Thanks to LTT and co. indiscriminately telling their viewers about how hard drives are "dead" and doing sponsored server builds with 16TB SSD arrays, I now have to endure at least one teenager with a Roblox pfp per week commenting "HDDs are dead lol, nobody should be using spinning rust! downvoted and unsubscribed" under my video.

    @notthebee oh that Linus who put his entire company’s video editing array on a poorly configured unraid server and nearly lost all the data as a result? That idiot nearly destroyed his business if not for a data forensics firm recovering the data from his disaster. Not a single backup of that server
