In other news I just pulled a deer out of the canal.

It put up a hell of a fight but I got it out and carried it to a field.

Doggo seems mystified and disappointed that I let it go.

Living on a boat I don't do much as get close to nature as nature keeps shoving itself in my face.

Every single one of us should be in the business of planting trees whose shade we know we will never enjoy ourselves. That shade is for our kids and our kids' kids. So to me, it's profoundly selfish to suggest anyone doesn't deserve having it easier than we had it with stuff like unconditional basic income and universal healthcare because "ThEy DiDn'T eArN iT."

We need #UniversalBasicIncome more than ever.

It breaks all these unsustainable practices and con tricks, AND IT SAVES MONEY.

Oh, and it doesn't funnel money to offshoring wealthy sociopaths.

Money for UBI ends up in the pockets of people who need it to live, who spend it, and will spend it in their communities reducing the need for centralised support, means testing and other inefficiencies.

@cosmiction I live in a country where those in power are desperate to destroy universal healthcare and have made progress in doing so.

But they still have to convince those who have it that it is unaffordable, which it blatantly isn't - because it's cheaper in so many ways.

If you don't have it, and live somewhere 🤔 where anything socialised is labelled communism you will have a problem with convincing people. But that doesn't mean you should give up.

Others will go ahead anyway.

What if AI cannot replace people's jobs but is part of a con trick.

Not conning the wealthy corporations who are enthusiastically firing their skilled workers, supposedly to replace them with statistical models that, it seems are not turning a profit for their owners.

What if the con is really about convincing skilled workers that they must accept lower pay and worse conditions.

Where have we seen this before?

A 70 year old fried collapsed and died in the toiet of his private room - on an NHS ward his life would probably have been saved. The only time my partner used his work-provided BUPA, he had a tonsillectomy from a dodgy practitioner, developed bleeding and was told to take a taxi back to the Lewisham practice. I decided we should go to A&E at nearby Charing Cross. He haemorrhaged in the room there. Would have died in the taxi. https://weownit.org.uk/act-now/end-private-healthcare-deaths-invest-nhs#cs=d5c349708a2763b5cf3283cddfe14d73_1712648897_336~cid=630902

@davidpnice even back in the eighties my friend was studying to be a surgeon, now a Professor of Radiology.

When I asked about private hospitals he told me he'd never use one for an operation because the risks from complications were much higher. Because if anything goes wrong they can't handle it and have to get you to an #NHS hospital.

I never forgotten that and things are much worse now IMO. Profit kills, maims and abuses and #UKLabour are fools to consider using it.

Personal opinion.

Despite RMS I think of the GPL and using those licences as a gift to the commons in perpetuity.

Unlike more permissive licences you aren't at risk of future releases being locked up in a kinda "Pray I don't alter the deal more" vibe.

There's nothing petty in how I use it.

But then I tend more towards the collective freedoms, than the freedom of anything goes.

I believe future generations should have access to all the code.

markhughes,
@markhughes@mastodon.social avatar

@lewiscowles1986
I don't claim expertise but you may be overthinking this. Lots of GPL code is likely to link with things that aren't GPL.

If I hold copyright and decide to license that code as GPL, I don't see how what it links with or what projects make use of it or whatever is an issue.

My contribution, my code can only be used under the licenses I choose to offer.
@onepict

markhughes,
@markhughes@mastodon.social avatar

@lewiscowles1986
On reflection I think you are right but I'm not going to look into it until the issue arises, and then I'll figure out the best way to approach it. Which might just be to avoid permissive code or projects.

What I believe is that we should shout about this now that we have a clear understanding and a concrete example of why permissive licenses are bad for open source. #FOSS

Thanks for pointing out my error.

Did he point out that Israel first attacked Iranian territory in the form of its Embassy?

That's not a claim nor an irrelevant fact.

#Israel chose to escalate this conflict, and to accelerate its genocide.

While the UK & US continue to supply the weapons of #genocide that have - so far - killed tens of thousands of innocent women and children in #Gaza.
