Stupid and arrogant move by Tesla, removing the turn signal stalks in new cars and forcing drivers to fumble around with buttons.

A physical example of how the tech industry constantly changes the UX in software -- like breaking into your house, rearranging your living room, and not allowing you to put it back the way you liked it in the first place.

This one's downright dangerous.

@dangillmor EU are pushing back on this, not just with Tesla but all automakers moving physical controls to screens.

    The marina down the canal quoted £400 + parts for an engine service. I'm told it's a fair price. I've booked it for Monday, the week after next.

    I was also told to keep the old belts that get replaced, in case of a future belt emergency.

    Here's the checklist.

    markhughes,

    @PKYo a bit steep IMO but maybe that's because I do it in an afternoon myself. £400 for an afternoon 🤔

    @PKYo worth a try, plus YouTube is awesome but to start I expect a friend in the marina could help.

    ? "the two failure modes of a commons are the tragedy of the commons and enclosure. In the former, a majority of people overuses the common resource to the point of destruction, due to too few restrictions. In the latter, a minority of people gains control and excludes the majority, imposing too many restrictions. That is, same tension in commons management & software ecosystem: between user freedom and developer sustainability."

    ☠️Hallucination is Inevitable: An Innate Limitation of Large Language Models
    — arxiv.org

    "By employing results from learning theory, we show that LLMs cannot learn all of the computable functions and will therefore always hallucinate. Since the formal world is a part of the real world which is much more complicated, hallucinations are also inevitable for real world LLMs"

    https://arxiv.org/abs/2401.11817

    markhughes,
    @markhughes@mastodon.social avatar

    @jbzfn it's not hallucination. That requires mind, imagination and perception, none of which are present in LLMs.

    Those using the term are creating a false image in their own minds and those who don't know that it's wrong.

    Ironically, this is what they imply LLMs are doing, but just create output using a statistical model which includes errors, delivered in a plausible and convincing way.

    Most would call this bullshit. So call it that and stop bullshitting people as if you're an LLM.

    markhughes,
    @markhughes@mastodon.social avatar

    @alexch
    Bad metaphors are bad and that's a bad metaphor. You can't change that.

    It's origin is the marketing hype and PR from those aiming to make money out of this.

    Words have context, and can be used to lead or mislead. Even some working with this stuff have convinced themselves it's sentient, so don't pretend others who have no idea how it works but are amazed it can use words convincingly, like a human, won't be mislead by anthropomorphizing.

    markhughes,
    @markhughes@mastodon.social avatar

    @alexch I know people, even intelligent people who are uncomfortable with the term but its widespread adoption as a result of hyped marketing has lead them to grit teeth and use it regardless.

    That you argue the point is your right, but reduces your credibility in my eyes.

    Personally, if I'm not comfortable with something that I think is damaging I won't pretend it ignore that and will tell people what I think and why.

    Their intelligence is hardly a reason for me to shut up.

    And LLMs & Blockchain are indeed terrible for various reasons. There's good there too, for LLMs but I'm not seeing anyone offer it yet, like a personal assistant on your own device for privacy with voice input and output. We could have that now where the f is it? 🤷‍♂️
