Personal opinion.

Despite RMS I think of the GPL and using those licences as a gift to the commons in perpetuity.

Unlike more permissive licences you aren't at risk of future releases being locked up in a kinda "Pray I don't alter the deal more" vibe.

There's nothing petty in how I use it.

But then I tend more towards the collective freedoms, than the freedom of anything goes.

I believe future generations should have access to all the code.

markhughes,
@markhughes@mastodon.social avatar

@onepict
Yep. It was only recently I properly understood why I was always reluctant to contribute to a permissive #FOSS project. I knew it was bad, but Redis have given the example I needed to explain it in one word.

All my own projects are GPL and I will never contribute to anything like #MIT, #Apache or #BSD licensed code. If I need a project I'll just fork and switch it to GPL. #Licensing

markhughes,
@markhughes@mastodon.social avatar

@lewiscowles1986
Sure, it won't change the license for earlier code but any changes or new code will be under GPL which is what I mean. It's just the reverse of what Redis have done.

Copyright is a deeply flawed weapon to use against the generative "AI" companies. But the tech industry's arrogant vacuuming up of everything in sight -- ingesting what others created so it can re-sell it to us -- is moving us quickly toward the worst possible Internet, a pay-per-view system that ruins what we've collectively built.

What is clear, meanwhile, it that Big Tech -- including Big AI -- should be broken up, period.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/06/technology/tech-giants-harvest-data-artificial-intelligence.html

markhughes,
@markhughes@mastodon.social avatar

@dangillmor agree, yet this will lead them to enclose and capitalise what's left, those well curated open sources will be under threat one way or another.

We're seeing it with GitHub. Stack exchange is a bastion of crowd-sourced expertise available free of charge, but for how long?

Ultimately Wikipedia will be crushed too as AI is used to destroy free competitors.

We need to break away from this, create a new form of commons, and new models for rewarding those humans building it:

I hope you and others will rethink acceptance of Meta and other VC / Corporations (notably , , and so on).

Why it was ever a debate given what we know about astounds me.

And they are no different from any other VC / Corporation, so let's get real and stop thinking we can work with them.

We need to bypass them and then replace them.

was a small step towards that, but it will never be enough.

Several years ago, I had a CT scan of my jaw. The dentist wasn't sure if she was allowed to give me a copy of the scan, which led me to ask "who owns the copyright to my medical images?" I still don't have an answer to the copyright question - but I do now […]

@Edent regardless of copyright, in UK there's a right to have a copy of your medical records for a nominal cost. I've used this twice: with GP records when they were on paper, and for a copy of post-op x-rays so I could see exactly what and how the metal pinning me back together was arranged. I can't see any reason dentist records would be different.

    Living on a boat with a refillable water tank, I've learned to conserve water.

    I wash daily but only shower once a week, because:

    1. It's a waste to run lots of water over your body and then pump it overboard.

    2. Human skin is great at keeping clean and oil-free without any help from Proctor & Gamble IF you let it recover from the chemical abuse of "body wash" etc.

    3. It's environmentally responsible.
