I'm reading Janette Sadik-Khan's "Street Fight" -- her book about her time as transportation head of NYC, building bike lanes, bikeshare, and pedestrian avenues

She prints this "city of the future" model from the 1939 World's Fair

Massive highways circling mammoth buildings; virtually no non-car routes; hilariously few trees

I'd love to read about: How did this become the vision of "the future" back in 1939?

What are some good books on that? Any recommendations, I'm all ears!

@clive I can imagine that someone that close to the invention and sudden industrialization of cars would've thought that we're moving into a glamorous future on four wheels, becoming trans-human

instead of, you know, leaving behind our health, safety, and the democratizationing force of walking and talking and playing in the streets.

I'm glad Urbanist Twitter is not representative of actual urbanists, because it's basically just this. 😆

I will never understand the mentality of people who dislike a YouTuber and then rant about it for months on social media, instead of doing something sane like, say, watching something else, making the content they want to see, or maybe touching grass.

I genuinely think that too much social media rots people's brains.

@akareilly i once got a cast by a Junior doctor, and I asked him what he's doing… cuz, it was uncomfortable.
What he thought he was doing is making it more comfortable.

So I go… "have you ever had a cast?" — "Nope." — "Then why don't you try what you're doing on yourself first?"

He found the suggestion absolutely audacious. And alien.

    As a murderer stabbed a Muslim woman named Dr. Talat Khan to death, witnesses report that 17 Texans pulled out their firearms. 17! The murderer stabbed her, stopped to check her pulse, confirmed she was alive, & went back to stabbing her to death.

    And 17 "good guys with guns" did nothing.

    A reminder that the "good guy with a gun" myth is a propaganda point to sell more guns. It does nothing beyond an anecdote to save lives.

    an interesting aspect about the corruptibility of power is that people in power are utterly unable to learn from their failures, barely able to learn from their success.

    the only thing they can do is to react to people beneath them having success, and going: i don't want that, then throw everything in their power to make it go away.

    They often don't even recognize new forms of success until it's too late for them, so it often takes a new generation of power hungry bastards to react to that…

    The mayor of NYC is going to South America on a "fact finding mission," to understand why migrants are here.

    What will happen when he discovers that one of the biggest drivers is climate change? Will he then come back and be all in on the Green New Deal? Or will absolutely nothing change, and he'll still ask people to come back into the office, commuting unnecessarily, just to prop up commercial real estate prices?

    Climate changes. Crops fail. People go hungry. People start walking North.

    @mekkaokereke I keep coming back to Just World Hypothesis, where a certain kind of person assume that because the world is just, those who experience horrific things deserve it.

    It may be "karma" for what they have done, but it may also be the sin that they are born with, which even marks their skin…

    I think that's not just a terrible model to view and judge people, but it's also a horrible framework for building a future.

    When I was in college in Singapore I had a ‘tandoori chicken fan club’ and it was mostly people who followed me to every back alley near our school that I knew of, so that we could eat food (often tandoori chicken).

    For many years I would also knock on random doors (that I knew of) and aunties would feed us (for a fee). I got a lot of amazing Nepali food that way. I guess my life hasn’t changed that much in that regard.
