My name is Marvin and I live in Bielefeld (Germany) currently working as a #sysadmin at a small ISP. I also self-publish books from time to time.

Most of my free-time, however, is spent doing #photography — mostly of #birds and, sometimes, other types of wildlife.

I will mostly be posting photos of birds or other bird-related content on this account, but I will also — at times — post stuff about languages and computers. I post mainly in English and German.

This profile is from a federated server and may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance.

Yellowhammer (Goldammer) relaxing in the sun. Always difficult to tell our yellow birds apart from one another unless they stay still or sing — luckily, this one did both! (Enger, Germany)

I want to read a bit again. Can anyone recommend some nice books about birds (or a particular species or family)? I'd really like something about birds in Germany / Europe specifically. Written in either English, German or Swedish.

Just nuthatch things. Climbing down trees upside down is their speciality!

Welcome to the Day 05 thread

Today I'm taking 2 trains (137km total) and there is one bike leg to all three border lines (34km)

I've brought my departure from Enschede forward an hour - so as to avoid rain later on the bike

I'll cross these borders:
🚲 Barlo (DE) – Winterswijk (NL) – dismantled line
🚲 Bocholt (DE) – Aalten (NL) – dismantled 750mm gauge tramway
🚲 Borken-Burlo (DE) – Winterswijk (NL) – dismantled line

Here’s today's video intro https://urbanists.video/w/oZncv3amvNnPedggVvkdKe

@jon Statt des Fahrradstreifens gibt es aber Parkplätze für Autos! Wirklich sehr typisch.

Und zudem ist die Straße in DE ein wenig heruntergekommener. Zumindest sieht es auf dem Foto so aus.

what the fuck is a .webp and how do i just download a damn jpeg?

mjohanning,
@mjohanning@birds.town avatar

@loren It's a file format invented (?) by Google. It's actually pretty nice imo and it can reduce file size by quite a bit. But it can be problematic if you're trying to download it and look at it on your PC or phone.

Wood Ducks (Brautente) are typically found in North America — what this particular Wood Duck drake was doing on a river (Werre) in North-Western Germany (Herford) I do not know.

It was definitely not in captivity and it also isn't a park area. Perhaps an escaped pet? Still absolutely stunning bird!

Yesterday ➡️ One more lane will fix it ..
Today ➡️One more lane will fix it ..
Tomorrow ➡️One more lane will fix it ..

Adding road capacity is not part of the solution ..

@dmoser Is this a real picture? This jus looks like hell.

Okay, why did it take me this long to realise this?! I should have recognised Londo Mollari much more quickly.

For , here's a new lifer for me from today — A Great Crested Grebe (Haubentaucher). They were reported at a very popular lake in my city (Bielefeld) and since I hadn't seen them before, I thought I'd try my luck — I actually managed to see a total of six of them!

I thought this looked cool. Turning the image black and white and lowering the highlights makes the sky look almost completely dark!

The weather's quite nice today so I thought I'd try taking a quick walk and take a couple of photos!

This dunnock flew into a tree right next to me and started singing. If you look closely, you can see that it is missing its middle talon on its left leg. The beak also seems to be a bit… chipped?

It's — and as is now tradition for me on this day, here's a photo of a Tufted Duck I managed so take this morning before work!
