Hi, I’m Noah. I’m a dad to a lovely kiddo I will always refer to as “the zergling” in the interest of letting them choose whether they want their life on the internet or not. All opinions here are obviously my own and definitely not from one of the three ferrets who take turns as the captain of my brain-ship. I post about technology, politics, racism, food, games, etc. I’m all over the map. When I had free time I played #ttrpg. Nowadays, Final Fantasy XIV as time permits. #nobridge

@Mrfunkedude That sounds udderly awful. I hope you find a whey out of the bathroom soon but if not, may the time be legendairy at least.

Sorry, not mocking at all, I'm a long time IBS sufferer and lover of all puns (and most dairy). Laughter by far has helped the time and everything else pass more quickly when food banishes me to the porcelain realm.

Loperamide and simethicone can help but honestly it's probably best to just get it out of your system. I hope it's over quickly for you.

In today's episode of, 'Don't legislate your religion on me...'

Pope clears way for 'God's influencer' to become a saint

15-year-old web designer, archiver, whose proficiency at spreading the teachings of the Catholic church online led to him being called "God's influencer" - will be the first millennial sainted

He died from acute promyelocytic leukemia in 2006

His corpse is on display in a glass casket in a Catholic church

@paul Catholicism is one of the strangest Role Playing Games I've ever seen played. The Player's Handbook makes zero sense and the Dungeon Master's Guide is just rife with cheats and workarounds. They need to rebalance the gameplay at some point, clerics and paladins are just way too powerful and any other spellcaster gets completely screwed by each new revision.

Tempted to make Linux my full time OS but I just spent $40 on a windows app.

monkeyninja,
@monkeyninja@mastodon.cloud avatar

@Mrfunkedude I took the plunge at the beginning of the pandemic and it was definitely an experience. I've been a Linux sys admin for 25 years so I figured I was well positioned to take the plunge. Because I'm a gamer I was running games through WINE and then eventually through a Windows KVM VM using PCI passthrough. Both required a lot of babysitting and in the end I finally went back to Windows. The MS AI initiative may push me back to Linux again but it's not without its faults as well.

Tell me the story of the last time you committed an act of kindness in 500 characters or less.

There’s nothing wrong with bragging about creating kindness. There’s nothing honorable about not sharing the joy of creating kindness.

We need to uplift and encourage people who create kindness in their daily lives.

So tell us your story. It doesn’t have to be something big. It can be something as simple as helping someone carry a bag of groceries.

How did you create kindness this week?

monkeyninja,
@monkeyninja@mastodon.cloud avatar

@Mrfunkedude Not the last time but still one of my favorite stories. A friend, a British ex-pat was excited to finally be seeing Howard Jones and then she broke her ankle and had to cancel. I emailed his website hoping maybe he saw those messages, asking if he ever did Cameo and if I might be able to purchase a moment of his time to say hello to her. I woke up the next day to an email from him with a recording attached wishing her well and a speedy recovery and hopes to see her at his next show.

Hey there friends, fiends, and everyone in between. Those of us of the Jewish persuasion just took a big ol' breath as we kick off what is bound to be one doozy of a Jewish American Heritage Month. So a favor if you please - keep calling out how wrong the actions of the Israeli government are, that is so crucial, but also we need you calling out antisemitism too. There's a lot of that and it's about to get a whole lot worse and we're really tired of having to be the ones to call that out.

monkeyninja,

@RickiTarr What I love about Flat Earthers is how lazy a conspiracy theory it is though. They could easily prove or disprove their own stance by hopping in a boat from Japan for 3 hours and have universally said "Nah, we're good. It's definitely flat."

REMINDER FOR
LAID-OFF & UNEMPLOYED
AMERICANS

there is no shame to use all the social services you have paid with your taxes, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE A WHITE, MID/HIGH INCOME EARNER.

welfare is racialized in this country to deprive all Americans of the social services WE PAY for.

it’s imperative y’all flood social services offices because if you don't, that's why the griftocracy keeps cutting local, state & federal budgets.

so here’s what you can do after losing your job:

/1

monkeyninja,
@monkeyninja@mastodon.cloud avatar

@blogdiva 100%. I'm white, I work in a part of tech that's usually pretty easy to find jobs in, and when I got laid off in 2014 that was the first thing I did and was so glad for those benefits. It was just after my kiddo was born, they had medical issues as an infant, and while I was only out of work for 4 months, those would have bankrupted us because I live in the US.

monkeyninja,
@monkeyninja@mastodon.cloud avatar

@blogdiva That's excellent information, thank you for taking the time to share all this!

I can maybe dig into this on my own but just curious if you have any insight into how accessible those support services are for folks in more rural areas.

That's an area I'm fairly ignorant, so I didn't know if there are certain federal mandates that place requirements on accessibility of state-run care or if folks in rural areas in red states are completely screwed.

(1/4) I don't really consider myself old per se, but I'll be 50 in a year and a half so I'm not exactly young either. There are so many things that have changed since I was a kid. I see so many ways in which life is better but also so many ways in which today's kids in public school have been robbed. There are classes I had that no longer exist in the US public school system anymore like wood shop or home economics.

I’m not here to argue about two party systems. I’m not here to wax philosophical about ranked choice voting. I’m just asking what your plan is after Trump wins. Are you going to help get neighbors to safety too or is it just you and your family? What’s your plan?

Today, my implanted spinal drug pump gets refilled at home.

I get muscle relaxer Baclofen. Some have pain meds, special blend formulations and other meds.

With an implanted pump, you get constant therapy directly to the brain, much lower doses of medication than oral and better therapy.

I was on a lot of Baclofen & still immobile. It gave me mobility back.

I am so glad I can have this procedure done at home instead of having to go in for a procedure.

@paul It really is astounding to me how much of a difference it makes in the efficacy of a drug by how they're administered.

When I was recovering from the pain of the bowel perforation I had in 2012, I had a PICC line placed and it was amazing to me how much more effective pain management medications were when they were sent straight to my heart to disperse vs. just through a standard IV. It actually let me sleep for a few hours at a time.

That's amazing they can do this at home for you.

I'm really tired of reading articles about the latest ways in which Republican bigots are attempting to legislate away and prohibit the existence of transgender people. First of all, you can't. We will fight you and one way or another, you will lose. Second, they clearly have ignored history or they would know that prohibition of anything desired by the masses accomplishes nothing. We will simply make our own transgender people in our bath tubs.

There is absolutely no rule anywhere that says that if you make a New Year’s resolution that it has to be difficult. We’ve had a doozy of a time the last few years, cut yourself some slack okay? Maybe give yourself a couple of wins. Resolve to pet your cat. Resolve to eat a single piece of fruit over the course of the year. Resolve to listen to your favorite song or eat your favorite food. They don’t have to make you miserable. That’s a choice you get to make.

After almost 18-months on Mastodon exclusively, we need some way to have a minimum user by user-controlled, private algorithm.

I miss so much content from people I follow just because I am not online at the same time they post.

I've tried lists and use them and they help but we need more.

I've lost so many regular interactions just for not being online when someone posts.

It's almost a Mastodon deal-breaker until I think of the alternatives.

monkeyninja,
@monkeyninja@mastodon.cloud avatar

@paul That's the great/terrible plus/minus when it comes to Mastodon. It's open-source so there's nothing stopping the creation of such a thing, but the barrier for entry is steep as you have to know Ruby and then get it added to whatever version of Mastodon your instance runs (or fork it and run your own).

I've never interacted with Eugen so I don't know how amenable to suggestions he is, but could always be worth pinging him to see if such a thing is on his development roadmap.

You know…it’s really funny how the whole “The Second Amendment protects the other 26” crowd are suddenly very interested in not protecting the fourteenth amendment. Oh jeez, I wonder if they’re the same folks who claim to own guns to protect themselves from an authoritarian regime whilst simultaneously voting for the guy who literally said that he wants to enact an authoritarian regime. Nah…couldn’t be them right?

The Mormon Church is being fined 5 million because it hid a 32 billion dollar investment fund. This was not accidental. The SEC proved that both the investment firm and church went to great lengths to knowingly hide these assets. For the folks playing along at home, that’s a fine of 0.016% on the investment. Imagine lying on your taxes and you hid an extra $100K offshore and the IRS said “No sweat, pay us $15.63.” If there are no other repercussions, that’s not a fine, that’s encouragement.

I can't recall if I shared this here or not...ah well you get to read it again if I have.

One of the key focuses with my last therapy group was around mindfulness and I was having none of it. It wasn't because I was averse to a mindfulness practice, but because it was mindfulness with a focus on positivity and at that time in my life, positivity was not only impossible but would have felt so deeply fake to me that I would have known it was a lie. The practice felt inaccessible.

monkeyninja,
@monkeyninja@mastodon.cloud avatar

@BlackAzizAnansi I'm Jewish and live in the South, so not well. I already don't put the menorah in the window like I used to, our celebrations are behind closed doors. My family would fade even deeper into the background. And we're some of the lucky ones. We don't "look Jewish." I can pass as just another middle-aged, overweight, cisgender, white guy. I'd have to figure out if I would be more useful staying here in the US and helping or going somewhere else and staying out of the way.

Jews are 2.4% of the U.S. population, but now somehow we’re also responsible if any Republicans get elected, even though 71% of us have voted Democratic since the 60s.

People simply can’t run out of things to blame us for.
