Barack Hussein Obama was a two time President.

No impeachments
No indictments
No tax fraud
No sex scandals
No divorce
No coup
Wasn’t a United States National Security Threat.

mybarkingdogs,

@Erik @SpockResists @Raven47

Exactly. Also, it's both possible for him to be better than trump (honestly, I could list a hundred awful or unfun things that are 100 percent better than trump) and still not someone we should celebrate. I don't think any US president is worthy of celebration just for being such (specific acts are fine, I'm not going to hate on FDR for the New Deal or Jimmy Carter for climbing into a nuclear reactor to stop a nuclear disaster or Obama for keeping a relatively stable internal experience in the imperial core, etc...)

mybarkingdogs,

@Outersider @Erik @SpockResists @Raven47

EXACTLY. And even when they do specifically good acts, the job and status itself is harmful and almost necessitates being a war criminal.

It's like what I said, and the same for cops - I wouldn't shade a cop for running into a burning house or sighting a tornado and calling it in. Those are good acts that ANYONE could do, being a cop is not required for them, and it's actually above and beyond for a cop. I WILL hate them for being a fucking cop.

mybarkingdogs,

@Erik @SpockResists @Raven47 In fact, I think the better argument against trump, is that trump did nothing good, not that others did everything or even most stuff right.

There is literally nothing on the scales for trump even having a moment of mercy, kindness, respect, etc that was authentic or even "staged, but someone got some good out of it aside from having their beliefs reinforced."

mybarkingdogs,

@Erik @SpockResists @Raven47

Like, trump couldn't even handle a basic "be nice to people after getting hit by a disaster" (paper fucking towels) or even do something that absolute shitheads otherwise did for personal reasons/their "legacy"(the EPA, PEPFAR).

And I think that's a far better indictment of his character as a person, no defense for him here.

mybarkingdogs,

@Judeet98 @abhijith @SpockResists @Raven47 @Erik

Yes, exactly. Even the "progressive" wing of the Democrats (which I don't hate, they're doing the best they can within the structure as it is) like Bernie and AOC and Warren and Porter etc) are closer to what would be considered social democrats elsewhere, as in barely left.

We don't have a true wide-scale anarchist movement (aside from people online) nor do we have a Marxist-Leninist party that actually is anything other than a cult/joke, so... yeah neither of the two ACTUAL wings of the left are represented

mybarkingdogs,

@Raven47 @Judeet98 @abhijith @SpockResists @Erik

I agree, the only problem is... they'd need to make an entirely new party because unfortunately, Green is a compromised mess (they started taking money from Putin, too), People's is Jimmy Dore and Nick Brana (which is NOT the good kind of red flags), Revcom is Bob Avakian's personality cult, etc.

They'd need to start fresh.

Do you think "mind uploading" will ever be possible?

This is some scenario where a human mind is copied and modeled digitally.

This isn't a ship of Theseus situation where a brain is slowly replaced over time.

mybarkingdogs,

@futurebird I would say it's hard to say either way. It really does depend on how everything works.

I think if the mind is separate from the body (and I do see it as such, as empirically proven in albeit small samples - multiple "minds" can inhabit one body, the "mind" is not inherently limited/defined by the body, etc) it's technically possible - it's just a matter of understanding how to emulate the conscious mind as its own thing, independent of its embodiment.

Realistically? I still think it's impossible, and I think almost all the "research" being done toward it right now (Musk's crap, etc) is worthless at best and a human rights violation at worst.

That said, that "research" and development doesn't invalidate the possibility that someday, a few hundred years from now, if we survive, we'll figure out how to make the individual mind/consciousness portable/capable of being "backed up"

    @ifixcoinops Agreed. Like, I have some give for it in stuff like the FFXIV fandom where stuff like jobs or raids are abbreviated as a matter of course but otherwise? there's no need for it at all!

    Nothing here runs censor filters, and so far (at least if your instance is on top of things with fediblock) you don't have to worry about assholes namesearching or topic-searching.

    If it's something truly likely to get you blocked or reported or yelled at (e.g. reclaimed or quoted slurs or the like) slap a CW on it or just don't say it and find a way to discuss it without saying it.

    > In 1933, the Communist Party established DETGIZ, a new publishing venture to produce children’s books, aiming to raise future generations of bright-eyed believers in Communist ideals.

    > The new initiative was entrusted to an experienced editor, Samuil Marshak. Marshak, though not himself a party functionary, knew how to engage children while teaching them the Marxist view of the world. He called for treating children’s literature as literature first—as a form of art—and asked for books that would combine “brave realism” with “even braver adventure.” A writer and brilliant translator himself, Marshak had built his literary career publishing poems for children and adapting British ballads and nursery rhymes into Russian. Building on his source material, Marshak adjusted emphasis, stressing the revolutionary potential of the folk ballads.

    Hey this is good actually? No seriously I think it's a good initiative that we should—

    > In 1937, during the height of Stalinist terror, the Leningrad headquarters of DETGIZ came under the scrutiny of NKVD, and many authors and editors were accused of treason, arrested, and either murdered or sent into exile. Among the murdered authors were the modernist poets Nikolai Zabolotsky (who had adapted Gargantua and Pantagruel by François Rabelais for Soviet children), Nikolai Oleinikov, and Daniil Kharms…

    lol every time. every single good thing that the USSR ever did is always followed by this paragraph. if the capitalists tried to make a false flag psy-op to discredit revolutionary ideals forever they couldn't have done a better job than what the Communist Parties of the world do as soon as they get their hands into power. I know because the capitalists did in fact try to run false flags to discredit revolutionary ideals, and as usual they were terrible at it, the damage they did with misinformation pales in comparison to the damage the USSR did with stuff like Kronstadt or Hungary.

    mybarkingdogs,

    @ramonita I never even knew about this, and I've been trying to find/learn more about the real history there without running into capitalist nonsense/Western misinfo (which is surprisingly hard, a lot like with trying to pick the truth about the DPRK out from the garbage narratives it's often bundled with)

    Like, it feels almost guilt-inducing and triggering, like I'm doing leftism wrong to be the way I am sometimes with "ML/Communist states have had a historically bad track record for giving socialism a very bad name due to lack of insight and an equal inability to capitalist/"Western" states to question themselves and admit wrongdoing"

    It's like, they're goodish at theory, but manage to be pretty bad in praxis, especially toward marginalized people and/or those who object for legitimate reasons.

    This. Honestly, while I find tankies to be really, REALLY problematic, at least some of them can lay claim to the "in theory it was good, in practice it became a genocidal, imperialistic hellscape" defense.

    The US does NOT have that defense. The only somewhat partial defense it has is that people have fought it and undermined it all the way to earn the few freedoms we have before being either coopted or killed or both.

    It's fucking insane how addicted corporations have become to everything you do, everything you look at, everything you type, everything you think about.

    They've gotten so brazen about it. Shit like this - the browser routing every image through some "AI enhancer" that also tracks what you're viewing - is now a default setting. I suppose at least people who use Edge can opt out, for now, if they know to.

    @delroth makes a great point about the recent Linus post defending the trans community, that I agree with 100%:

    [Poa dot st] is already on the "worst of the worst" lists. This type of stuff is all they do. Every well moderated server on the Fediverse already has them blocked. Why do we make it hard for new admins to know this?

    Making them easier to avoid is the work that @Are0h is tackling. It should be easy and automatic for admins to opt in to deny lists that remove the "worst of the worst."

    mybarkingdogs,

    @hazelweakly @mekkaokereke @Are0h @LovesTha @delroth @Gargron @oliphant

    This, and I actually believe the Tier 0 should be default because there's no legitimate reason to interact with the "worst of the worst" aside from reporting/intel type stuff that you shouldn't be using a non-anonymized and secret account for anyway.

    Re everything else, that is where priorities and balance and aesthetic preferences (as well as privilege and vulnerabilities) do vary among individuals and that's not a bad thing - for example, some people might feel more comfortable in a library and some in a bar, and some in something that combines both - and all of those people are valid.

    The purpose of a good default blocklist is making sure the library isn't full of propaganda and the bar isn't a nazi bar.

    I was in rural, redneck Virginia yesterday and the little town main drag had posters and banners up celebrating Pride.

    I really don’t think people realize just how miniscule the right wing backlash is relative to the scale of what it’s fighting against. Media, social and otherwise, are giving this hate movement a massively outsized voice. This doesn’t mean we should ignore it, of course, but perhaps we should not be a bunch of megaphones
