Really overwhelmed lately, wasn't as active. Miss y'all though, how's it going?

nancylwayne,
@nancylwayne@mastodon.social avatar

@skaly Sorry to hear about you being overwhelmed.

I'm doing pretty well; thank you for asking.

Any day that I can spend time in the pottery studio is a good day--even when things don't go according to plan. I spent a couple of hours this morning glazing some pots. The photo attached shows one of them. The rough spots usually smooth over in the kiln firing.

nancylwayne,
@nancylwayne@mastodon.social avatar

@skaly Thanks! It might look like crap once it's fired. Crossing my fingers that the kiln gods are kind to my little pot.

Just finished proofreading the galleys of my next book, "The Web We Weave: Why We Must Reclaim the Internet from Moguls, Misanthropes, and Moral Panic," and I discover it and its cover are now up on Amazon! Good day.

A librarian helped me find the book my son requested today. She knew the plot & the characters & even pointed me to the newest story from the series in case he might enjoy that too. Then she recommended other #books he might like.

When I thanked her, she simply shook her head explaining, “It’s my job. And I really love my job!”

I share this anecdote simply bc librarians are the best people 📚✨

nancylwayne,
@nancylwayne@mastodon.social avatar

@Sheril When I was in junior high school, it was the school librarian who turned me on to books in a major way. She got me voraciously reading 19th century British novels, of all things.

Books became my escape, my ability to travel to foreign lands and other planets, and my ability to walk in someone else's shoes.

I agree, LIBRARIANS ARE THE BEST PEOPLE!

"Duke University has decided to close its herbarium, a collection of 825,000 specimens of plants, fungi and algae that was established more than a century ago. The collection, one of the largest and most diverse in the country, has helped scientists map the diversity of plant life and chronicle the impact of humans on the environment.

The university’s decision has left researchers reeling."

@bicmay You gotta' love this juxtaposition:

The ending sentence of one paragraph: “We are a university with limited resources.”

And the starting sentence of the very next paragraph: "Duke University has an endowment of $11.6 billion."

Really makes you wonder WTAF??

It was abnormally warm in Southeast Michigan yesterday, and again today. And the crocuses are blooming early this year. Photo attached of what I see peeping through the leaves on yesterday's dog walk in my neighborhood. This is NOT the February weather of my youth.

  1. It’s my birthday today. I’ve been celebrating since last week with friends and family, and the celebrations will continue into early next week. But today is the actual day.

  2. Bought myself two dozen roses because I deserve a gift from me. (photo attached)

  3. Taking myself out for a birthday lunch at a local Japanese-Korean-Thai restaurant because I’m worth it.

I'm taking a pottery hand-building class now and this is my first hand-built vessel. I wanted a flower vase that could be used as a low centerpiece. Although there is much to be improved, overall I like how it turned out! Also, why is this called a "frog lid"?

  1. Saw my first snowdrops of the season--and not surprisingly, they are early this year. Maybe this should not be in the category of a "good" thing, but it did make me smile to see them. (photo attached)

  2. Broke out the homemade feta cheese that has been brining for 6 weeks. Super delicious with a great texture that is somewhere between crumbly and creamy.

  3. Heading to Los Angeles tomorrow to celebrate my father-in-law's 95th birthday!

  2. On my way home, I noticed this adorable set of doors: one for humans, and a mini one next to it for fairies perhaps. This is one of the many charming things about Ann Arbor--there are fairy gardens and fairy doors all over the place. (photo attached)

  3. Watched Episode 5 of Season 4 of "All Creatures Great and Small" tonight. My husband and I got all weepy.

So far, feeling somewhat better, thank you all.

Ok, what I have, most likely, is what’s called C-Diff. Look it up. It’s scary.

I had to take antibiotics for some oral surgery 2+ wks ago + antibiotics to counter those antibiotics (which trigger C-Diff).

It worked…until it didn’t.

I got symptoms. Being tested to make sure. Yes, I’m miserable, but I luckily haven’t gotten a severe case.🤞🏼

Weird: 1st case a few mos ago was not from antibiotics, no idea how I got it! Poss contact?🤷🏻‍♀️

End.

nancylwayne,
@nancylwayne@mastodon.social avatar

@GottaLaff I used to teach gastrointestinal physiology to first year medical students at UCLA. The attached slide was part of the evidence-based information I provided. Drinking a probiotic shake lowers diarrhea and C. diff levels in hospitalized patients on antibiotics compared to controls who drank a shake without probiotics. And I practice what I preach--I always eat yoghurt with Lactobacillus while taking antibiotics as a preventative measure.

@nancylwayne@mastodon.social avatar
