My retro computing niche is source code archaeology: the art of reconstructing maintainable source code from disassembly and reverse engineering. It's harder than it sounds but also fascinating and rewarding. I also enjoy working with unpopular or niche programming languages. I very much follow the beat of a different drum.

What is your favorite text-based game written in ?

Rules:

  1. Any dialect of BASIC is valid.
  2. "Text" can include extended characters in common use in the 8-bit era.
  3. or is valid, but the scope of the question is wider than that.
  4. No sprites or graphical tiles.
  5. Modern games that meet this criteria are valid.

With stealing everyone else's thunder, what makes a project a good fit for a scripting language OTHER than Python?

@devinprater I'm trying to improve the installation instructions so that they take blind users into account. I'm hitting a brick wall.

Right now boots a live ISO to a terminal. No SSH by default. No screen reader by default. Hell, if there is a problem at boot time with GRUB, you won't know.

What helps? The only thing I can think of is maybe having a serial interface an external device can "screen read" aloud. Any suggestions would be extremely helpful.

I want to replace my existing wall thermostat with something smarter but NOT connected to "the Cloud" for security reasons. The more open the the better.

My goals are to be able to deploy wireless temperature sensors in every room of the house and be able to script things from a with API calls to the device. Any suggestions?

Are there there any friendly modes for ?

That is, if I have a , an , or a , etc. are there any digital modes I can actually use with those systems given their extremely constrained system specs by modern standards?

My laptop has firmware that vendor-locks the (buggy) WiFi card. Any attempt to replace it results in the system failing to boot with an "unauthorized network card" error.

Obviously, this is needles vendor lock-in. Are there any useful guides that would help me understand how to dump the firmware, disable the check and reflash the system with modified firmware?

Can anyone here recommend a good company for my club?

I'd like something that's reasonably priced but has cpanel and Let's Encrypt support. Any takers?

Next, I need to migrate them away from a static site that feels like it was written by a teenager in the mid 90's targeting Netscape 2.0 and towards something modern. I think I'll go with against my better judgment, because it's reasonably old-person friendly.

For the uninitiated, sc-im is a -like spreadsheet program for the on and . There may be a windows binary but I wouldn't know.

It seems odd that is not listed in the UNESCO "Atlas of The World's Languages in Danger." The total speaker base of Esperanto approximates that of the native speaker base of (vulnerable).

's criteria is that the must have native speakers, which Esperanto clearly has.

Are there any good sources that document the number of native speakers? Alternatively, do any new religious movements use Esperanto as a liturgical language?

grammars are good at that kind of thing: https://raku.org/. I did not know that was DSL friendly.

Are there any good fixed width that are especially good for representing math? Example: the over scores in 0.3̅3̅ can be functionally impossible to spot with Fira Code.

Trying to write math-y things in on should not be hard.

profoundlynerdy, to forth
@profoundlynerdy@bitbang.social avatar

Those of you who love #Forth, do you foresee a pathway out of obscurity for the language? In an era where memory safe languages like #Rust dominate, does forth have something to offer?

It used to be that its super power was being "just enough abstraction" atop #assembly language made it the king of flexibility. But in an era where machine language institutions are themselves just really fast macros in a tiny CPU cache, I'm not sure how helpful that is.

Serious question: my lacks support. Other than "call and complain" which would be fruitless -- their call center staff are not actually technical and have no idea what IPv6 is -- what reasonable steps could be taken by the ISP's users to push for adoption? Anything?

@grammargirl Okay, very much in left field here, but the Freemasons had an outsized impact on both US and French history.

Have any ritual terms or even shibboleths entered into common usage? I can think of one or two plausible examples but you know more about etymology than I do.

"Hoodwink" seems unlikely but "to give the third degree" seems plausible. That's about all I can come up with.
