Watching on so if horror is not your thing, maybe mute those hashtags. This one promises to be extra depraved.

Like who knows really and I would never comment even in DM but there’s some users around here of whom I’m highly suspicious they are who they say they are.

My yearly subscription for my preferred Mastodon client @ivory lapsed the other day, so I gave Ice Cubes another whirl. Nope. There are a few thing it has that I wish were in Ivory but it’s just not as smooth, like there’s a lag to a lot of the actions of a few seconds. No disrespect to the Ice Cubes devs, it’s a good app for the most part but Ivory is so smooth. If I’m not on the website it really is the best way for me to interact with Mastodon.

What I like about listening to vinyl has nothing to do with being an audiophile. Sure, I want the best playback system I can afford, and for sure don’t want to damage my records. For me it’s about the ritual and nostalgia. I like record stores, the physical objects of music that is important to me.

Every time I go to download my digital-only (as in, I don't own the vinyl or CD) releases I pause, wonder, should I be downloading these as FLAC rather than 320Kbps? Then I look at the file size difference and think, that's so much more space, I'll need a bigger drive, more to backup. So I try to research, and realize that's an audiophile sinkhole that yields nothing useful. I'm unlikely to spend time a/b testing formats; my hearing is not golden anyway; my equipment just ok.
So ¯_(ツ)_/¯...?

Listening to an gentle electronic track today and I swear the melody synth patch is one I’ve use on a track I’m working on.

Right now on there are all 4 seasons of the SyFy series Channel Zero and if you like I cannot recommend them enough. Each season tells a different story, each loosely based on a well known creepy pasta. And they are genuinely some of the most unnerving, freakiest fiction I’ve seen. They’re strong stories, rooted in real human drama and subtext, but also just filled with disquieting, surreal horror. Truly unique television.

A white staircase leading to a door in he middle of a clearing in the woods.
A contorted man with a clown like face lying on the floor.
A creature made of teeth sucking on some fingers.

Album of the Day

Betty Davis - Is It Love or Desire

Shout out to @gnitro for hipping me to a Betty Davis album I wasn’t aware of. Fascinating story behind this “lost” record. Absolutely perfect discography, Ms Davis has

Album of the Day
David Bowie - Station to Station

I think it was @Robotron who was saying that the other day that this was their favorite Bowie album. I saw it was still in print so I ordered it as an early birthday present.

I can’t say I like it more than Low but not a bad cut on this.

One thing about Mastodon that I've come to find super delightful is seeing so many wannabe "big fish", clout-chasing accounts flame out.

For what it’s worth, @Robotron, I pre-limited Threads when they first launched and I’m gonna let that stand. I think it’s better to stay defederated and proceed from there. I’m leaning toward no good can come of it, having nothing to do with embrace/extend/extinguish (which I think Mastodon can avoid). It just seems a vector of bad actors.

This Pat Finnerty video has a joke that made me laugh as hard as I’ve ever laughed at a joke on YouTube.

“Brought to you by Bandcamp. Because your friends have to listen to half of one of your songs somewhere.”

Of course it has never happened to me but every time I’m in an airport I’m half expecting to run into someone I have not seen in a long time.

Reupping: On the anniversary of moving to Mastodon full time I’ve written a long blog post about my thoughts and experiences, the good, the not great. With some thoughts about Bluesky as well.

This platform is one best things that’s happened to the web in the past 20 years. It’s not without its problems and it’s probably not for everyone but for me this janky platform has been pretty great.
