@bookstodon Even if it doesn't catch on, I would like to institute a hashtag which already exists, I believe? Anywho, whatcha reading?

Ben H. Winter's new book BIG TIME, and it's really good so far. It is lean, so perfect for those who hate padding in their stories. I don't want to give away the premise, so I will just say that it's a bit of a thriller that involves time itself.

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon I'm reading The Dawn of Everything, A New History of Humanity by David Graeber and David Wengrow. It's fascinating so far. Turns centuries of academic thought about human history upside down by tying a lot of disparate strands of evidence together.

@kimlockhartga @cthon1c @bookstodon Definitely. There's too much to grasp in one reading. I got it from the library but I'm going to buy a copy.

I started an American Rocketry Challenge team at my school this year. The students built 2 rockets. We went out to test them yesterday. We had an ejection charge failure that destroyed one rocket but the 2nd one worked very well. We'll go tinker with these (and rebuild) and do our qualifying flights in a month.

A slow motion video of a model rocket launching to about 700 feet on a clear day with a blue sky.

As a teacher and school admin, I've always been annoyed by the DSM-5 labels we apply to kids, full of D words like disorder & deficit. I finally got around to writing about it and proposing a different model:

My kid made this meme and asked me to share it on Mastodon. I think you might need to be a Kerbal Space Program nerd to understand it.

@bookstodon Hard to believe how many people have replied to this! I have a list of about 50 books now. Should keep him busy for a while. A lot of old books mentioned here that I read when I was a kid and had completely forgotten about. Thanks everyone! I'll keep reading all the fresh comments and adding to my list.

I hadn't realised I could use the 'I'll die someday so nothing matters' angle...😜😂

My time is so limited these days that I barely watch TV or movies (which I used to love - once upon a time I'd buy film festival tickets in blocks of 25). A musical episode or a gimmick here and there is not enticing to me. I want something incredibly well-written and well-acted, that will make me think or see the world differently.

What's good?

rabbit_fighter,
@rabbit_fighter@mastodon.world avatar

@ben Reservation Dogs is really good. One of the 2-3 best shows ever IMO (although I don't watch a huge amount of TV).

I trained gtp-2 on the three books in my own mystery series. Now, it's spitting out nonsense text in my writing style. My favorite so far (punctuation lightly edited):

"The interior of the master suite was dim, the floor damp with dirt and grime. A breeze blew thin on the seaweed, watching over the bay. I imagined Oakland’s port city orchards--big, wild, round and smoky. I remembered the old adage: if you can't get by without water, you can never really have anything but water."

@DarkMatterZine @fskornia @lunalein @bookstodon Many books were published in 1813 (the year Pride and Prejudice came out) but few of them are still read today. It's no different now. Lots of books published. Few will stand the test of time.

@dbsalk @bookstodon maybe the Narnia books or Wizard of Earthsea. My kid loved those when he was 9-10yo.

I created this timer web app for my kid to help him stay on track while getting dressed, doing homework, etc. It can do simple countdowns of 5, 10, 20, or 30 minutes. It can also do an alternating 10 minutes of study with 3 minute break timer. Also, it can hoot at you every 30 seconds because of course it can. Free to use for anyone who finds it helpful.

rabbit_fighter,
@rabbit_fighter@mastodon.world avatar

@kepic Good idea. I'll work on that. I do have a 10 minute on/3 minute break option but it should be more flexible.
