Fixation How to Have Stuff Without Breaking the Planet by Sandra Goldmark, 2020

Our massive, global system of consumption is broken. Our individual relationship with our stuff is broken. In each of our homes, some stuff is broken. And the strain of rampant consumerism and manufacturing is breaking our planet. We need big, systemic changes, from public policy to global economic systems. But we don't need to wait for them.

I couldn’t make it to this side of the living room when I first started cleaning out my late-Uncle’s home.

Grandalf, to money

This type of reporting annoys me.

>>Yes, some middle-class retirees will spend their savings and die broke.

No, MOST middle-class retirees will spend their savings—because they have no choice and bugger all saved—and die broke.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average American's annual wages across all occupations as of May 2022 was $61,900. That means the average retirement account at age 67 should be $619,000, based on Fidelity’s guidelines.

According to the Federal Reserve, the average retirement savings balance for Americans is much less than that at $426,000. They are the "Boomers" that Ford has decided are hoarding money.

No, Forbes, the top 10% are hoarding money. Sure a few, a very few, are giving some away to charities but most are not. They are the dragons of the Age of Men, hoarding wealth for the benefit of nobody but themselves.

And they're not "... making sure their money doesn't go to Uncle Sam." They're ensuring they don't pay their fair share of tax, increasing the burden on the middle- and low-income workers and reducing tbe amount of cash available to the Government.

This business of "I don't trust the Government to spend the money wisely"? Guess what! I don't trust 𝘺𝘰𝘶 to do that either.

Ontario’s Financial Accountability Officer has found that the government failed to spend $7.2- BILLION of its budget last year, including $1.7- BILLION unspent on healthcare as the province's ERs close, surgery waitlists grow and private, for-profit clinics expand.

Corollary : "Yesterday, PM Trudeau walked right past again and handed Mayor Andrea Horwath 45 million dollars for affordable housing. The Premier’s can’t be trusted with federal funds anymore. They hoard it and don’t use it to help anyone except their donors and to line their own pockets."

Anyone remember ? Or the ? The ? ??

I blogged this last year: my "gadget graveyard", a.k.a. old stuff I should probably get rid of but I somehow just can't so stop asking already, geez.

Some people hold on to 10x as much stuff, so I'm actually kind of a lightweight. Also, I'm only posting this because @SomeGadgetGuy just triggered a memory of my beloved LG G4 phone. 😀

I try to limit my unread pysical books to about twenty or it gets unruly, but if we're countig TBR lists then 173 years seems like a low estimate 😂

Suppose that one has a problem with acquiring large and heavy items out in a field and needing to haul them out. (Items like boat anchor radios, old computers, and Teletypes, just for example.)

Any recommendations on a folding or otherwise highly portable hand truck that might help out in a scenario like that?
