IBM buys HashiCorp for 6,4 billion USD.

It probably was a good idea, that some of the most important Open Source products were already forked some time ago.

Sigh.

What kind of developers are that who develop software which selects people to be killed? Can you imagine working in such a team? Are they working with user stories on Kanban boards?

It’s horrifying that we have gotten so close to that seemingly far away future where AI kills actual humans.

I'd say, every professional developer used @Xdebug in one or the other way in their work. But debugging Neos or Flow applications can be challenging, since Flow generates proxy classes in a different directory than the original class. @derickr kindly created a proof of concept for supporting our case in Xdebug. Now we are raising funds to make it really happen, and we almost reached our goal: https://www.flownative.com/en/blog/flow-support-for-xdebug.html

The Neos Team postponed the release of Neos 9.0 until we are confident that most people will have a smooth upgrade path. One requirement is that enough projects we know of are using it in production. So, if your web agency‘s website is running on Neos, please start upgrading it and gives us feedback about any issues you might find.

So, what do I do in Zürich? Jung von Matt Tech helps us updating the brand and – after some workshops – developed a fresh design for neos.io.

This week I join the team of volunteers who implement the designs. Maya, Michelle and the JvM team are lovely hosts and make us feel very welcome. And they sponsor their work, too!

This is only possible in an Open Source community. I hope it inspires other Neos agencies to ramp up their contribution one way or the other. ❤️

Usernames will be introduced to the Signal messenger! The new feature is now being tested in a separate staging environment and will be rolled out later.

The plan is that while you still have to provide your mobile phone number during registration, you can later configure Signal so that you can't be found via your phone number and you can chat with others just by telling them your username.

Arrived in Frankfurt, joining the dear Neos Team for a week of advancing the release of Neos 9! Thanks a lot to DE-CIX for hosting us at their comfy meeting center (and keeping us awake with drinks and coffee). Looking forward to this week!

The Neos Team has been working on a new content repository for the last 8 years. What took us long? The new CR is event-sourced, with sophisticated projections and a thoroughly designed PHP API, something which has not been done before, not even outside the PHP ecosystem.

Here are the slides for the talk @sebastian and me gave today at the International PHP Conference in Munich. Ping us, if you have any questions or feedback!

Thanks everyone joining my talk about how to build a general purpose PHP image for dev and production. I uploaded my slides to this old-school website: https://www.slideshare.net/robertlemke/a-general-purpose-docker-image-for-php

Check out the links at the end of the presentation for links to the mentioned Git repositories.

Only two weeks until the International PHP Conference starts in Munich.

I'm very much looking forward to giving a talk with @sebastian about the new Neos Content Repository which was in the works for so many years. Spoiler: You can use it in any PHP projects without Neos!

https://phpconference.com/software-architecture/neos-content-repository/

And, as always, I'll also have a talk about something container related.

Hope to see you in Munich!

An important security release for curl and libcurl is scheduled for October 11th. It will address a HIGH CVE and likely affects a lot of the software you are using on your local machine or server.

I realize that I mostly share non-development topics here.

My explanation is that most of the dev topics are so self-evident to me (hey, I'm programming for 38 years now) that I can't imagine that sharing any of the things I'm working on or thinking about is worth sharing. It's the same problem I have when I'm ask to give a talk somewhere – what the heck could I tell that's not boring and self-evident?

Then again, there's still a good chance that the things I'm concerned about are boring.

Trump is on the campaign trail in Michigan, ranting about how dangerous and useless electric cars are.

Meanwhile, Toyota (the ones who have somewhat slept through the market for pure electric cars) announces two new solid state batteries. Apparently, they have now made the decisive breakthrough and see themselves able to build a battery that has more than 1,000 km range and can be charged in 10 minutes.

My take on so far:

I've not really used any of the Meta products in the past. I don't expect data privacy in Social Media but I stongly oppose this sort of commercialization and manipulative impact on world politics.

But even that put aside, Threads doesn't look like it can replace Twitter for what I loved it. The algorithm seems to work exactly like Instagram's which is just wasting everyone's time. Doom scrolling for irrelevant shallow posts. 1/2

If you really want to know why and how ChatGPT works, here is a fitting post about it: Stephen Wolfram explains the basic mechanisms, how the probabilities are calculated, how neural networks work and how ChatGPT uses all that concretely.

It's a long post and you need some pauses to think about it. But I think it's worth reading.

A very inspirational keynote by @tante about getting back the "we" in web. I liked the message to empower non-tech persons to create their own "shitty websites", not striving to be perfect, but to experience that they have a voice and creating a website is not exclusive to professionals. We should educate kids at school, let them have fun and get experience the web like we could 20 years ago.

@ocramius I'm currently working on a big refactoring, basically transplanting the heart of Neos Flow – and the heart-lung machine is laminas/laminas-code. Fingers crossed that I am wise and experienced enough to sew everything back together properly.

Just under two weeks ago, @derickr presented a new Xdebug feature he is working on at the Neos Conference in Berlin. The Neos community is very excited about this feature, but also Derick needs financial support for such complex work. In his blog post for Xdebug's 21st birthday, he gives an overview of the development over the last years and explains how you can support him. Please do!

Happy birthday Xdebug and thank you very much, Derick!
