A Besicovitch set is a subset of the plane that contains a unit line segment in every possible orientation.

An equilateral triangle of unit height certainly meets that description, but Abram Besicovitch devised a clever method to construct sets of much smaller area.

Besicovitch's construction was later simplified by O. Perron.

If you carve up the original triangle by dividing one side into n segments, each of which becomes the base of a new triangle, then you can slide these triangles together to reduce the total area while still covering one third of the possible orientations for a unit line segment. If you repeat the same trick for all three sides of the original triangle, then you can cover all orientations.

The version shown, where n = 8, doesn't decrease the area much, but there is no lower bound on the area you can achieve, and with a slight variation on the method you can construct a Besicovitch set of measure zero!

An equilateral triangle has each side divided into eight segments, which form eight triangles with the vertex opposite that side. These sets of eight triangles then slide closer together, overlapping, producing a spiky shape with a smaller equilateral triangle in the middle.

Interesting maths aside, That graphic is beautiful and mesmerizing. Excellent choice on the colors.

Annie Dillard has this bit in Pilgrim at Tinker Creek about how we don't think about how we go our whole lives on this planet carefully angling our faces so we don't look at the sun.

To me, that is how we are with the vast majority of the social forces we are using and getting used by as we shape our sociocognitive world.

Great imagery from you and Annie both.
I'm going to consciously use yours to remind myself to stop looking away so much.

This is an important PSA for folks looking to make any place more inclusive. Do you want to be liked by everyone? Or do you want to make progress?

I don't know anyone that has both been successful in transforming a non-inclusive place, and hasn't been accused of sounding hostile.

It takes a huge amount of energy to dance on eggshells, and I don't have time to do it. So I don't. I'm a big boy. I crack sidewalks when I walk. So eggshells would have no chance anyway. 🤷🏿‍♂️

I'd rather work for a hopeless cause than succumb to apathy and cynicism.

Even a slight chance that what I'm doing is somehow useful is a better outlook on life than believing that nothing can ever be worth doing.

Thanks for an interesting and thought provoking post.
I'd forgotten that a nihilist position was that human values were baseless which is not necessarily the same as the shallow "life is meaningless" usually associated with nihilism.

After thinking on it, I think I'm in that philosophical group these days.
There are lots of areas of life I sign high value or meaning to without having ot being able to tie that meaning to some fundamental basis. And that's fine by me!

I strained my voice recording my LinkedIn Learning courses back in January and have been struggling ever since.

Now I get to go to speech therapy. I’m actually pretty excited about it from a speech-language perspective! I’m imagining I’ll learn all sorts of fascinating things. 🤓

I'd like to think positively and assume that only a tiny minority of people hear Ron DeSantis speak and think, "that's who I want to lead this country!"

Like, we can have disagreements over tax policy and whatever. But this isn't real democratic discourse; it's bone-chilling stuff.

roytoo,
@roytoo@mstdn.social avatar

@ben
I would like to think that as well but unfortunately know better.
I was raised in the culture of fear that DeSantis (and Trump) are tapping into and there are way too many folks who do want a leader saying this garbage.

Just like some folks think the allegations that DeSantis was even peripherally condoned prisoner torture is a badge of honor instead of shame.

roytoo,
@roytoo@mstdn.social avatar

@ben
For some the answer is a flat "No" because they are convinced that democracy and a pluralistic society are evil because they don't "follow god's will".

It isn't enough for that group of folks to live their lives as they believe. Instead they've been taught it is a sin to not strive to make everyone live the same beliefs. Some really are convinced that they are foot soldiers in a war against "forces of evil".

Amazon will increase charges for POD books in June (details at https://kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/GPGVYM9KWTYLD2GD#newcosts; typically US$4/pbk, US$10/hbk).

Like many authors, I’ll have no choice but to pass these increases on to readers. So if you were thinking of buying any of my POD editions, sooner is cheaper.

[Edit: Aargh, my apologies; I overstated the increases!

I thought the table of new printing costs was showing how much the costs would increase, when in fact they were showing the new total printing costs.

Happily, the actual increases are about US$0.15 per book.]

Try checking if your local public library has a POD capability.
Ours does in Frisco, Texas under the name Trailblazer Press but as Greg noted it looks more expensive than Amazon POD:

Twitter somehow gets worse week by week--right now it is an unusable swamp of right wing conspiracy theory, wave after wave of racism (there is currently an "invasion" underway at the southern border that must be stopped by lethal force) crypto bros, and bots selling high-follower accounts. Amazing really.

So, as one of the folks it really works for in an individual level:

When I talk about releasing on Friday, many ppl respond with "why not wait 'till Monday." That's missing the point, which is that your code should be high enough quality that you feel confident releasing whenever it's convenient, even on Friday (and no, that's not a "fantasy").

roytoo,
@roytoo@mstdn.social avatar

I hear "We aren't confident in our changes and don't want to get on a critical incident call to support issues on the weekend."
Which is just longer way of saying customers really do the testing.
