This. Via @gruber

This is how I want to publish my books. As something to be experienced on the Web, not as a stale epub file. Something beautiful. Something at home in the place I write about.

I don't know how to do that yet.

But I'm working on it.

I lived in Germany for 6 years (during my childhood), and I’m not sure that I ever realized until now that Morgen means both morning and tomorrow. It just occurred to me out of the blue, and it’s so weird.

edit: “heute Morgen” means “this morning” (that has passed), but “Heute, Morgen” means “today, tomorrow”.

ryanmiglavs,
@ryanmiglavs@mastodon.social avatar

@simevidas I think that makes it the equivalent of “morrow” as used in Middle English. You could say both “on the morrow” or “good morrow”.

I think “morn” is/was sometimes also used like that.

Obviously these all certainly originate with the German, but still interesting that English has over time made a hard split.

@ivory Any chance y'all would considered making it easy to delete drafts? I think right click to show a context menu with delete would be nice, but even a Clear All button would help.

@gruber I would read that! And honestly probably assign it as reading to my design team as well.

One thing that my time on Twitter taught me is to consider the question of “what if a thousand people did the thing I'm contemplating doing?”.

And if the answer is “that would suck”, then I don't do that thing.

No one drop makes a tsunami, but you can choose to be a drop in a cloud passing by instead.

@boredzo Not sure if you’re making an intentional reference to it or not, but did you know this is Kant’s categorical imperative?

I just randomly thought of setting the height of floated images in lh (line height) units, and it works so well I almost can’t believe it.

Wow. That’s a shitty move.

“Say you search for ‘children’s clothing.’ Google converts it, without your knowledge, to a search for ‘NIKOLAI-brand kidswear,’ making a behind-the-scenes substitution of your actual query with a different query that just happens to generate more money for the company.”

Ka-ching!

ryanmiglavs,
@ryanmiglavs@mastodon.social avatar

@matthiasott I do wish Megan Gray provided a lot more detail. What, exactly, was on the slide she mentioned as the source of this info? Is that “children’s clothing” her hypothetical example, or something from Google’s slides or testimony?

She has credibility, but we get very little concrete information, but a lot of description of Google’s greed and shadiness. I think I believe it, probably? But it’s way too thin.

What’s a good methodology or set of features that make TailwindCSS unnecessary. I don’t like having to parse a long list of classes some of which are inconsistent with the underlying CSS properties.

ryanmiglavs,
@ryanmiglavs@mastodon.social avatar

@pepicrft Create a bunch of utility SASS mix-ins instead!

ryanmiglavs,
@ryanmiglavs@mastodon.social avatar

@Jbasoo Gotta be honest, I can’t stand utility classes. You lose most of the benefits of CSS, it’s difficult to reason about (the order of the classes matters! it’s bananas!), and it’s a brittle nightmare to maintain.

I know a lot of folks build cool stuff with Tailwinds and similar, but I’m completely allergic to it.

ryanmiglavs,
@ryanmiglavs@mastodon.social avatar

@Jbasoo Sorry, should have mentioned your approach sounds rather reasonable and maintainable. My nightmare is the many times I’ve inherited code where each div (always divs) has a dozen cryptically-named, contradictory Tailwinds etc. classes for stupid crap like adding 10px margin-top.

I’ve been playing around with a prototype calculator widget for PCalc on iOS 17, and I don’t think - currently - it’s feasible.

It’s a bit sluggish because of the round trip through the AppIntent and re-rendering the widget, for one. But also, if you type too fast, and tap while it’s rendering, it just randomly opens the app.

I’m not sure if that’s a widget bug, or if there’s a way to turn off the opening behaviour, but right now I don’t think I can ship this.

A video of a PCalc calculator widget failing in a variety of ways.

ryanmiglavs,
@ryanmiglavs@mastodon.social avatar

@GrimmReality But like, Shakespeare wasn’t presenting Romeo’s and Juliet’s “love” as real or good. I know a lot of people seem to see it that way, but that’s a superficial take.

They’re just horny teenagers who love being in love (as Mercurio pointed out), surrounded by morons in a comically foolish feud over nothing.

I mean, we don’t have an exact age for Romeo, but it seems clear he’s also very young and immature?

Every year, I look for the great new APIs and frameworks that will improve the apps I want to build, overnight. This year, TipKit is one of them. Having gone to the trouble of building my own half-decent help system this year, which has dramatically decreased support requests, TipKit feels like the kind of thing that will dovetail beautifully with it https://developer.apple.com/documentation/TipKit?changes=latest_beta

The most insidious myth that I was taught in American schools was that inequality and injustice are somehow artifacts of the past, and that America marches inexorably towards greater freedom and equality with every generation.

Not only is this take entirely unsupported by actual history, but this comforting myth absolves us of having to take action to fight inequality and injustice. Just sit back and relax and everything will just get better.
