In mind of the fact that voice assistants and many AI things are almost always coded female (because things you give orders to, treat as a service provider, and own are "naturally female" apparently), is any work being done for gender-less voices?

@mattwilcox @brandon I love the common woman’s voice 😆

It’s not surprising that so many on the right are unaware that the Trans Day of Visibility is an international holiday that has been celebrated on March 31st since 2009. I didn’t hear them make a fuss the last time it overlapped with Easter in 2013.

ryanroberts,

@kfury Are they even aware Easter Sunday is on a different day each year? Technically it was Easter that was held on TDV 😂

Here’s a clear example of how aggressive the image processing has become on newer iPhones. This is a comparison between the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the iPhone 11 Pro Max, taking photos of distant text at equal magnification. Note how the 15 Pro Max’s image pipeline has made up all the details.

EDIT: I’m going to drop mentions of “AI” and “hallucinating” here because I think it’s conjuring up the wrong mental models in readers’ heads. What’s likely happening is over-eager noise reduction and sharpening (which may or may not have pattern matching) creating details where none exist. Every phone does some amount of NR and sharpening, but later iPhones are super aggressive in this regard, so much so that the results often depart from what we accept as “reality”.

@drahardja @Gargron Going to need a better source than ladbible for this. Should be easy to reproduce.

ryanroberts,
@ryanroberts@mastodon.social avatar

@Gargron @drahardja I’m not seeing any more examples, and can’t recreate it myself.

And I don’t get the comments about the 14 Pro sensor being a physical 12MP sensor with 48MP actually being software upscale. Halide enabled full 48MP photos in RAW and so does the main camera, with minimal processing. I see noticeable detail improvements I wouldn’t attribute to software. 🧐

Are we just ignoring the fact that The Doctor on Voyager was a walking, talking violation of the temporal prime directive? I mean sure, you can say it's just a little holo-emitter from the future, but he used it to free a whole civilization of holographic life forms, drastically changing the timeline...

This is a great summary about Tailwind: https://nuejs.org/blog/tailwind-misinformation-engine/

We played a lot with utility-first ideas for @getkirby and our site still uses utilities heavily. I think I poured enough time in understanding it to confidently say that the downsides outweigh the benefits. Some utilities are great, but going all in on utilities means that you actively have to ignore the full power of CSS.

ryanroberts,
@ryanroberts@mastodon.social avatar

@bastianallgeier @getkirby Something that often missed out when Tailwind is discussed is just how utterly dreadful most devs are at CSS. I regularly inherit projects and those that use Tailwind are always a breeze to get into (styling wise), those with custom dev written CSS are rarely anything but a headache.

Well, I loved Clear. The ancient list app on iPhone.

They released version 2.

Call me deeply suspicious; but why does a to-do list app which is pure text, and who’s selling point is having a super simple ui that is purely swipes and pinches… larger than the install of old operating systems?

Trust level dropped through the floor. Uninstalling.

It’s hard not to say “AI” when everybody else does too, but technically calling it AI is buying into the marketing. There is no intelligence there, and it’s not going to become sentient. It’s just statistics, and the danger they pose is primarily through the false sense of skill or fitness for purpose that people ascribe to them.

The Israeli army has issued an order for the immediate relocation of 1.1M Palestinians from northern Gaza to the south in 24 hours. The UN has categorically condemned this order.

Forcing 1.1M people, including 550K kids, to evacuate in 24 hours or be bombed to death is even more cruel considering THERE’S NOWHERE TO EVACUATE TO.

We need a ceasefire.

The response to war crimes against civilians cannot be more war crimes against more civilians. I’m horrified that this is a controversial take.

The latest posts by Musk on migrants in the Mediterranean make me sick. Thousands of people in rubber boats drown every year right in front of our shores with their small kids. If we lose the ability to imagine ourselves with our kids and loved ones in those boats, who do we become? Monsters!

He is the face for X. He's turned it into a place for monsters. Please, don't be a part of that. It does not have to be Mastodon. Just don't stay on X.

Today are global climate protests ✊

The major German news outlet @tagesschau publishes a short article about it and combines it with a second one „Fridays for future hardly influences public opinion in Germany“ That headline is based on a poll by Infratest, run on two days with 1200 people, mostly via phone.

They sell that as representative. That’s tabloid style. Yet another reason IMHO to join today! https://www.klima-streik.org/
