You can get a SIM card slot cleaner. I just checked, out of need. Just like with CD driver cleaners, tape drive cleaners, print head cleaners, stretching all of the way back to Roman times, at least.

I want a macropad keyboard that's also kind-of a watch. Like, it's a macropad, but you wear it on your wrist/arm.

@foone Wait... like this? Because I want this too. And the fact that these never went back in to production is proof that Nintendo has lost their cool.

I attempted to help my brother with a confounding problem with his car this afternoon, and after a few hours of work, we were no closer to an answer than when we started.

Recently, his battery has been draining down overnight. He thought maybe he had a bad battery, so he got a new one. Same problem.

I went over there today and found that the car is drawing 1.6 amps from the battery even when turned off.

We started troubleshooting by pulling fuses. The car kept drawing 1.6 amps through all of them.

I pulled the main fuse, and the car still drew 1.6 amps.

For a while, we thought it was maybe the alternator rectifier, but that wasn't it.

We unwrapped the sheath from the main bundle of wires coming off the battery and found no shorts.

We disconnected the wiring to the starter and that wasn't it.

The car still draws 1.6 amps! We can't figure out what's doing it!

@MLE_online May be a job for an inductance tester? https://www.ebay.com/itm/395351715370 should be able to tell you which wires are hot without having to find or make contacts on each of them.

Ever hear oldies bang on about the noise from dot matrix printers and its effect in an office environment? Simply observe this photo and understanding will be yours.

scrottie,
@scrottie@anarchism.space avatar

@NanoRaptor I don't know the printer in this case, but I remember "train printers", which were way louder than dot matrix: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_printer#Train_printer . Each column had a hammer. A band with all of the symbols embossed on it spun like a band saw opposite the paper and hammers. The paper moved rapidly through through the whole mess. Each letter in each position would be a bit offset vertically due to timing of the train/band vs paper. First co I worked for had a noise enclosure like that.

scrottie,
@scrottie@anarchism.space avatar

@NanoRaptor Sorry if I'm bloviating on about things you already know. Early dot matrix printers were much louder than later desktop ones too but train printers were heckin' loud.

scrottie,
@scrottie@anarchism.space avatar

@Ralph058 @NanoRaptor I think this is largely buried in history and apologies for recapping the Wikipedia article, but a line printer historically printed an entire line of text all at once. We started to think of line printers as printing a line then advancing to the next line but originally, the crazy things smacked out that whole line all at once. My first reaction coming from the micro world was just "is this normal? is this thing ok? does it always do that?"

got a new mini-project: this is the AMTRADE "The Real HD-Drive" which is a PC floppy drive with this board on the back enabling an Amiga to read high density floppy disks (1.75MB).

@tubetime I'm sorry to @ you like this, and I'm sorry if I already did and forgot, but I have some DEC 3100s and Sun 3/60s, and I'm terrible with electronics. I keep trying to do minor repairs or kits and I just ruin things. I'd really especially like to get PLAs from those dumped if possible since that's kind of a ticking timebomb. Do you know of anyone who does stuff like that for randos like me? And regardless, thank you for sharing the hacking that you do do.

Voting is just one thing you can do to shape your society and community. It gets a lot of attention because powerful people really do seem to let a surprising number of us have a tiny little mote of influence. The powerful talk about voting ceaselessly, because "the people" having power, however constrained gives them endless anxiety. Don't fall into the trap of thinking it is your only power.

Don't fall into the trap of thinking, because it's only a little power, isn't important either.

scrottie,
@scrottie@anarchism.space avatar

@promovicz @futurebird If you write reps and say "hey, this policy you're publicly supporting was written by Republicans, and Republicans are now openly boasting about how the intent all along was to hurt queer and trans kids", with sources, you'll get subscribed to a mail list where they continue to brag about that and all of the Republican legislation they're supporting. If you protest in front of their offices, they'll go to the media and use that as "proof" that the left are bullies...

scrottie,
@scrottie@anarchism.space avatar

@promovicz @futurebird that's all in all. Or else they'll do what Pelosi did with Net Neutrality, where she was absolutely flooded in opposition to destroying it (being in San Francisco, CA, she should know better, but was very clearly told better), then only after carefully shepherding it through and countless protests in front of her office, she had a sudden change of heart and declared she was now against it but so sad too bad it's now too late to do anything...

scrottie,
@scrottie@anarchism.space avatar

@promovicz @futurebird but you're right.. some times, on some small issues, with some still slightly independent candidates who haven't been completely absorbed by the party apperatus, they can be influenced... but not at any dedectable level: https://www.commondreams.org/views/2020/11/18/united-states-not-democracy-stop-telling-students-it . Studies repeatedly find that popular opinion has no detectable influence on policy in the US.

@mondoweiss @palestine @israel Same thing was happening at the NYT during the invasion of Iraq... the CIA got to sign off on all reporting. When it was revealed that the CIA was reviewing reporting, of course the reporters at the NYT fought for years to be allowed to acknowledge what everyone else knew before the CIA finally permitted it. This is probably still happening there and everywhere else major.

Does anyone have any good suggestions for a Converse alternative? I like chucks as a simple, basic lace-up canvas shoe, but they only really made sense when they cost $20 a pair. Now that they're like $70, they're not worth buying, considering how quickly they fall apart.

scrottie,
@scrottie@anarchism.space avatar

@MLE_online https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BBRC5BVW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 is the best I've found so far and I've tried about a dozen (exact same objections as you). Not as solid as the 30-years-ago Chucks but have held up to pretty heavy use for four months now. Cons were coming unglued within one month. Unlike many other knock-offs, sizing and proportions are reasonable.

scrottie,
@scrottie@anarchism.space avatar

@MLE_online ok looking at that again, I'm not sure why they're trying to gender Chucks. Chucks weren't a male thing before so not sure why they're trying to start that now.

Do I know anyone on here who has experience adapting a rotary phone to work over modern VOIP?

I know I will need both an adapter from rotary to touch tone and then a VOIP adapter, but there seems to be a variety of options and I can't tell what's good and what's lousy.

scrottie,
@scrottie@anarchism.space avatar

@MLE_online Can't comment on what's lousy, but doing exactly that with a Linksys PAP2T VoIP adapter and a Dialgizmo pulse-to-touch adapter. Not supposed to work, but all of the phone jacks in the house are plugged in to that and it all works fine. Dialgizmo I believe I ordered out of Australia.
