I really want Mastodon to be the next big thing, but it frankly has a culture problem that is going to kill its broader adoption. After quite a long time here, and a few days at Bluesky, the comparative experience looks like this:

Bluesky: "Everyone's posting about the latest weird inside joke, and I'm excited to post my weird twist on it!"

Mastodon: "Jokes offend me because I was born without a sense of humor. I demand that you wrap all levity in a content warning or I will FediBlock you."

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@arossp Weird. I never see such posts. And I'm here all day long. How am I missing all this content warning action I literally never see. Which explains why I have trouble understanding these claims that it's some negatively charged cultural plasma. Not saying it never happens. Just saying that it must be limited to instances I never see. And I see many.

Over the last few hours Mastodon treasure @Teri_Kanefield has been the victim of very vulgar harassment on her server law-and-politics.online.

Mastodon lets users create their own instances, but you need to block bad instances.

Fortunately, Mastodon provides support for this:

Just made the really hard decision to close registrations to https://calckey.social.

Talk about persistence!

It was getting continuously hammered by new registration requests. And 20 people managed to register during an hour when most people weren't even able to log in.

So now @kainoa will do some additional work to enable more scale, and we'll re-open registrations in the future.

Twitter knows my long standing position on ; oligarchs only care about losing money or influence. We need to stop thinking elections are our only leverage.

Imagine the cost if activists were to encourage false alarms across America. In weeks, it could shut down the schools until Congress bans assault weapons, high cap magazines, and other serious gun reforms.

Or we could sit on our asses and wait for more people to die.

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@LouisIngenthron I strongly disagree. Civil disobedience always carries an element of risk. The whole idea is to swamp the system and shut it down. When schools are too unsafe for education to happen, parents will force Congress to either act, or nod at the chaos and await voter wrath. It's time stop this limp resistance to fascism that has kept us in this inert and ineffectual stasis for 40 years. Only action begats action.

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@LouisIngenthron Must disagree again,. I've been studying CD fo 3 decades and that is simply incorrect, Neither Gene Sharp or Erica Chenoweth would agree with you. The mission is not to hurt anyone. The mission is to disrupt the status quo and raise the cost of enabling inaction. When an outgunned society has no leverage, it has to create some. Name me an alternative action plan. "Voting" doesn't count. If it worked. we wouldn't need disruption.

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@LouisIngenthron A simple airport or freeway "Slow-down" puts innocent people at risk. Almost every other Greenpeace action potentially put innocent people are risk. When a society is already on life support, some risks just have to be taken. You don't get reforms with politeness or risk free gestures. You're simply saying that doing nothing is better than risking something. The enemy counts on that inertness. And they have for decades.

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@LouisIngenthron You're missing the point. They would be known to be false almost from day one, They can be done cleverly without risking anyone. But once they are in play, schools have no choice but to shut down because of that minimal risk. THat's the whole point. Once they have, the national conversation and battle is joined by multiple stakeholders. Name me one single alternative. I've pondered them for years.

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@LouisIngenthron I have heard this sort of cowering defense of inaction since I was in high school. America liberals keep bringing sporks to a gunfight. And they keep losing more ground to a determined enemy,. Mario Savio called for bodies upon the gears in 1964. We've never tried that. If not this one example, find others. But you will see that anything meaningful has risks. It's never too late for a society to actually do something., I favor not one, but dozens of these.

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@LouisIngenthron The minute the tactic is known, cops will NOT respond with force, without hard evidence of real incident. They can even be told in advance of the tactic. Most cops already take those precautions. But school systems will fear liability and simply close up, There will be public backlash for that, but that's why it becomes a national conversation: Instantly..

The re-brand of the Fediverse as "Mastodon" has created big problems -- problems that were both predictable and preventable.

For one thing, the honeymoon period for Mastodon is over.

People aren't willing to ignore its flaws anymore because it's the one alternative to Twitter that has traction.

Now people want creature comforts.

But guess what? Because the entirety of the Fediverse is branded as "Mastodon", people are more likely to migrate to Bluesky than elsewhere on the Fediverse.

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@atomicpoet I think the entire fediverse project needs to be reframed to get people out of this mindset that we're trying to build another Twitter. I don't much care if the masses ever care for the Fediverse. In fact, I'd be thrilled if they stayed away. I think we need social media that serves the people who care. About anything. If that sounds a bit elitist, well, perhaps it is. But so what? Is there some law that says we have to pretend everyone's voice has similar value? Spoiler. They don't.
