Mills Observatory was where I saw Halley's Comet in 1986 and saw a moon rock on loan.

I just submitted a, rather impassioned, response to the survey https://www.dundeecity.gov.uk/consultations-and-surveys/mills-observatory-consultation for saving in

Built in 1935 as a gift to the city, it was intended for education and outreach. It was unique as being the only public observatory in Britain. I know there's loads of astronomers on Mastodon. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Looking at Boxy Headings in and, damn, if that isn't just a smidge away from being a graphical synopsis mode for authors.

I dream of the day I can write a paragraph of synopsis in a properties block and have a “synopsis view” but my lisp skills are almost nonexistent.

Unless, as I've seen suggested in the past, the headings /are/ the synopsis...

Hmm.

Linux is open source so anyone can contribute.

This means, as just happened with xz, that malicious software can be added to the system.

It also means that anyone can also look in depth, catch it, fix it, and tell us about it.

Irony’s going to go off the scale if current AI becomes intelligent and malevolent, just in time for the Sun to reach maximum solar activity in 2025 and wipe it all out with a massive solar flare.

Waking up this morning to news of a Moon lander's successful touchdown, and a massive solar flare. It's all go in space!

Listening to several political podcasts from assorted British commentators this week, there seems to be a consensus that the 's motion was primarily a cynical ploy to embarrass .

This seems to me to be

a. Lazy;
b. Cynical;
c. Woefully ill-informed about Scotland;
d. Wrong.

Even ignoring the fact that the leader of the SNP's wife is , sympathy for the Palestinian cause on the left in Scotland is very widespread.

Widespread sympathy for the Palestinian cause? Yep. Dundee is literally twinned with Nablus.

Last night, about 7:24pm I was stargazing and there’s a bright star above and to the left of Orion. Just as I’m wondering if it was a planet, it starts to fade out to nothing in the space of a few seconds.

So it turns out there’s loads of starlink satellites moving through that space, and I’m thinking maybe one of them flared.

Felt quite freaky at the time…

For all the Lemmings fans, here's the documentary Can You Dig It, in which I took part.

I don't want an Alexa.

I want an Alexi.

“Hey Alexi, what's the weather forecast?”

Then Alexi Sayle tells me if it's going to rain, and that the Tories are complete bastards.

Good recommendation for very basic, linux-friendly video editing software? (Prefer open-source/free, but willing to pay if it's actually what I need)

snap2grid,
@snap2grid@mastodon.social avatar

@sundogplanets
I'd recommend KDEnlive based on having used it myself for years. It's grown to be pretty sophisticated, but the basics are straightforward.

Inherited a Ring doorbell... and after much faffing and searching... it's basically a video camera that you can't view your own recordings without a subscription.

Capitalism, y'all.

I think I’ll probably give up on Jekyll and move my blog to something else. Every system update, something else breaks. The installation is just so fragile. Time to go all-in on org-mode with org-publish.

Or just accept that blogging is dead and/or it’s not for me.

snap2grid,
@snap2grid@mastodon.social avatar

@gabrielesvelto
Like I say, I'm going to try moving to Org-Mode. I already have a lot of experience with that. Just seems a more natural fit, and I don't have to worry about the same kind of plugin dependencies that both Jekyll and Nikola have.

Thus begins a first for me on two levels, one I will be simultaneously live tweeting, tooting and skeeting along with a movie and two that movie will be Swordfish from 2001, which I have never seen before.

On I will be adding the hashtag in case people want to mute me.

Was going to mark the 30th anniversary of the release of Amiga Hired Guns this month (the Wikipedia article says April… it is wrong: that was the demo disk) even if I can’t recall the exact date. But I’m in the middle of preparing to move house, everything is boxed up at the moment, and I can’t really concentrate on much else.

Timing, huh?
